Coverdale and his exes
David Coverdale spoke to Rock Guitar Daily and revealed that he’s still in touch with Glenn Hughes and Bernie Marsden:
Glenn….Oh bless his heart. And it’s mutual – we are the original unrighteous brothers! We speak most every day.
It reminds me of the transition we made from Saints & Sinners into Slide It In – with Slide It In I wanted to electrify Whitesnake more. I was talking to Bernie Marsden yesterday, and we were just chatting about different bits and pieces – and I can honestly say, and it’s no disrespect to my former colleagues, I felt that I’d read all the books that were in that series.
He even apparently managed to patch things up with His Blackness:
I’m reaching out – Ritchie Blackmore and I are communicating in the most positive way – and I truly appreciate that.
But not Micky Moody:
…I put Whitesnake on hold at the end of 1981, and Micky didn’t even bother coming to the meeting we had. He had a more important engagement – a darts match at the local pub.
Then, a couple of months later, I get a call from him saying, ‘Look, I’ve seen the error of my ways, can I come back?’ and I said, ‘Absolutely!’
Because, I had literally – I was starting a sold out UK tour in three weeks, and I didn’t have a band! I had Cozy – and that was it!
So, he came back in, but he really wasn’t invested or engaged in the writing process for the Slide It In album, as you can see on the writing credits. Then, when we were doing the actual album, you could see that he wasn’t having a good time. When his manager called me, and shared the same information, I said, ‘Well, you guys do what you want, I’m moving forward with this. And that was the end.
In fact, Tony, recently I reached out to Micky Moody through his manager – to shake his hand, but he feels there’s still too much water under the bridge, and presumably he would rather not shake my hand.
Read more in Rock Guitar Daily.
Thanks to Classic Rock for the info.
“Because, I had literally – I was starting a sold out UK tour in three weeks, and I didn’t have a band! I had Cozy – and that was it!”
I may have Alzheimer Light sympoms but I sure would bet on the fact that Jon Lord was still there as well!!!!
March 15th, 2013 at 18:11“It’s so weird, Tony – every time, and I see quite regularly pictures of the Slide It In band, it’s still breathtaking to realize that 50% of the band is no longer with us. We’re planning on doing our musical tribute to the guys on this tour.”
50%?!
March 15th, 2013 at 18:13Would be nice if Dave and Glenn made a new album together in the style of Hold On, Sail Away, You Fool No One, High Ball Shooter and Might Just take Your Life.
March 15th, 2013 at 20:56Wouldn’t this be cool:
March 15th, 2013 at 23:55Blackmore/Hughes/Coverdale/Aldridge
Good to hear that David and Ritchie are getting it together…Good for them..Lifes to short…
March 16th, 2013 at 02:27Would be great to hear Ritchie and David do a blues rock album together..The song Mistreated and the Burn album in general blew me away and not forgetting the beautiful and thoughtful Soldier Of Fortune.
March 16th, 2013 at 13:14So come on…let’s make it…Blackmore/Coverdale/Hughes…it’s too late to make a MKIII reunion but you can still make something very interesting together…
March 16th, 2013 at 14:08How many facelifts can his face undergo before it falls to pieces completly… These health fanatics (coming from USA) seems to believe they gonna be 110 years old, give me Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood or even Ian Gillan any day, they may look rugged but they are the real thing! No fucking ballerina like Coverdale….Suck on that!
March 16th, 2013 at 14:19Mark, what confused you in 50%?
March 16th, 2013 at 19:08I hadn’t thought about the Slide It In line-up being half gone, but then you think Lord, Powell and Hodgkinson and wow, they really are going fast! Sad, it all seems so unfair…
March 17th, 2013 at 04:42Andrey
Check your facts before asking me things like this.
In the SLIDE IT IN european version of the album line up we had :
Coverdale, Lord, Galley, Moody, Hodgkinson and Powel.
The USA edition : Coverdale, Lord, Powell, Sykes, Murray.
The tour line up :
Varied.
March 17th, 2013 at 10:48Lord and Galley left and did not really get replaced.
DC got us Richard Bailey who he stacked behind the speakers and Sykes in the end was the only guitarplayer.
But still had only DC as only member that now still is in Whitesnake.
For your information : That makes 20% left today.
March 17th, 2013 at 10:49Blackmore/Coverdale/Hughes/Paice/Wakeman
March 17th, 2013 at 11:32I would like to see and hear Blackmore, Coverdale & Hughes making music together again, even if its just one or two songs. Like the Who Cares project. They could get Jason Bonham on drums and Derek Sherinian on keyboards/organ.
March 17th, 2013 at 15:14Priest (Primadonna sounds better)!
March 17th, 2013 at 18:02I hope the only reason for your being irritated is a long long winter and lack of vitamins.
Your strange math made me a bit surprised. What DC meant was a simple thing actually.
Yes, his European release had 6 names you mentioned. Unfortunately 3 of them are no longer with us. That’ s all he meant.
Thank you.
@10: Jim, Hodgkinson is still alive but Mel Galley is gone.
March 17th, 2013 at 18:2415
I do feel irritated yes.
I ve been told I should change the brand I use for washing my clothes.
Well, actually, the softener that is.
Primadonna?
I m afraid not. Wish I could!
I had it completely wrong. It did not enter my mind for a milisecond that DC was talking about people that had died.
Reading the interview appearantly not gave me that idea but……
Just saw Whitesnake’s ” White Night In Russia” again.
I really cant take anymore ” baby baby’s” for a while now.
And I still think that Vandenberg(And I wanted to be so proud of him)never came out with the qualities he showed in his own band.
It’s not just me.
March 17th, 2013 at 18:57Friends of mine saw the DVD as well and think the same of it.
Maybe this Coverdale/Page piece is of interest?

March 17th, 2013 at 19:13Page, Coverdale & Hughes for my Money!!!
No ‘Deep Led’ inference, just raw British (No Offense) Rock
Alternatively bring Roger Chapman out of retirement to do a CD of Duets with DC. Something along the lines of Northwinds LP – They’ve shared BV & Drummers in the past!
March 17th, 2013 at 20:46Yes, Blackmore & Coverdale would be cool. Don’t involve Glenn (me, myself & I ) Hughes though. Blackmore wouldn’t have anything to do with him anyway, thankfully.
March 18th, 2013 at 05:12There are so many reason that Jon Lord’s passing has been felt hard, & one of those is the ‘album’ that he wanted to do with Blackmore, before as Lord had said ‘I shake off this mortal coil’. I forget where I read that interview, only a couple of years ago! Bummer!
Whitesnake I was the best at the beginning of the eighties
AN .. album trilogy
Ready An Willing, “Come An Get It,” “Saints An Sinners”
of course, a living monument tastament “Live .. In The Heart Of The City ”
Moody Marsden-Coverdale-Murray-Lord-Paice setup ..
premium hard rock, rock an roll band, a typical British band
old school ..
Later he became a “Whitesnake it’s me .. David Coverdale”
American sound,hayvi metal, commercially
After all these years .. David has proven to be a good leader.
Whitesnake is still a good band
David
superb singer, who holds a high standard on albums and live concerts.
David… singer of emotions and passions, one of the best, one of my heroes
See you in Zagreb 15.06.Dom Sportova …on the location where he last performed in 1975 with Deep Purple
March 18th, 2013 at 09:22Fool for your lovin’
http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/music_and_videos/whitesnake-deliver-fool-for-your-lovin-live/
March 18th, 2013 at 15:51I’d love to see either one of this options:
Blackmore – Coverdale – Hughes – Sherinian – Bonham
Coverdale – Page – Hughes – Sherinian – Bonham
March 19th, 2013 at 02:48ivica @ 21 – I discovered the Ready & Willing album after looking at it back in 1982 in a record shop & noticing certain song credits included the names Coverdale, Lord & occasionally Paice. I had no idea about Whitesnake & bought the album instantly after seeing these guys names on it! Loved it & the following 2 albums & of course ‘Live In The Heart Of The City’ was a great loud party album!
March 19th, 2013 at 10:51I never followed them when the leather trousers came in & US market chasing style, that changed the band forever big time!
So now I am looking at youtube clips with Bernie Marsden & Micky Moody, duo clips with both on acoustic guitar, wonderful!
That woeful version on ‘modern’ Whitesnake trying to play Fool For Your Lovin’ currently at the Classic Rock web site, is appalling in my opinion! Man have they gone down hill. Thanks for reminding me of those early albums that I used to own, but alas, sold many years ago to get rid of all my albums. I just became annoyed at them lying around & then having to lug them in heavy boxes when moving house! CD’s were much easier, but I should have kept a few vinyl classic I suppose! Oh well, such is life!
These bloggers could benefit from actually writing for publications, what’s this one on about now? No time to read the hackwork.

If you like live albums, there are many great boots to be found. Complete shows(Or should I say MORE COMPLETE than the known official one?).
May I please redirect you to : PERFECTPURPLE.COM
March 21st, 2013 at 20:28I m ploughing to old Darker Than Blue back issues from 1987 now.
based on a snippet of info about Lord playing in a movie called ” Water” together with Harrison, Clapton and Ringo Starr I traced this one :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekkIOX56DnQ
Yeah, I know it has been upload already in 2006 : )
March 23rd, 2013 at 19:42How the hell did you come across that one Priest??? Pretty cool. JL got around didn’t he. Sure do miss him.
CheerZ?!
March 24th, 2013 at 06:51Tracy
Well, I suppose you ought already have that?
I suppose you were a member way back of DPAS?
I even read Simon mentioning a post from you those days, Somewhere 1987. I read about 6 or 8 back issues now.
So I m already mixing up.
He mentions you as a SHE : )
It has always been a pain in the ass, I reckon. : )
Did he later apologise to you after that?
As yet I ve missed it.
Btw, often Simon mentions rumours.
But sometimes they get stuck in your head.
Example : There is talk about Lordy doing the soundtrack as well of that Movie.
Based on further search : I dont think he did.(*)
I also read things about a HOBL tour show filmed by tv, shown on Yugoslavian tv but to a DPAS member it comes across as filmed on a US stage.
I suppose he was mistaken, or not?
never heard of a full blown 87 tv shot show.
I downloaded ” Worth the wait” which is from 85 and shows a big chunck of Space.
I understand that was part of a 85 tv shot show, but the rest is still in someone’s closet, I think : (
And it goes on and on.
Irony and pain reading about exiting stuff they were on those days and knowing some of those wished for projects never arose or did 20 years later!!!!
My personal; frustration is :
The Dutch VPRO broadcasting company recorded one the first MK 2 dates ever in Amsterdam, Paradiso, 1969.
I understood they tried to negotiate about it but it still behind closed doors.
40 years on and that **********************VPRO does not want to share this historical recording!!!
There is the bootlegs of the show but how excellent it all could sound is to be heard in a certain ” leak” of the stuff.
Which sounds as good radio quality.
(*) : I ve read another soundtrack Lord could have been involved with.
I m reading those mags with sparce light, late in the vening and I when I m kinda tired, so…….
As yet I dont remmeber what it was!!!
Lets have a look again at some of the mags I threw on my coffeetable(…)
Ok, this is it :
Jon did work with and for a band called Limelight.
2 tracks.
And they were supposed to land on a film called White Fire.
Jon is mentioned to have played , produced and arranged it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejyujJ4FXv0
This is what I found on YT. 1985.
In the mag it is mentioned to have happened before the reunion, so…..I guess this is it.
Their guitarplayer btw is called Glenn Scrimshaw.Which Simmon finds funny, I ve yet to understand why.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKq48ywZ1DA
Not a clue if things like this have anything to do with it.
Anyone tell me if they spot Lordy at work.
March 25th, 2013 at 13:02In the track ” One at a time” I think I hear Vicky brown singing.
So, who knows?
March 25th, 2013 at 13:04In 1988 MTV is said to have done some filming at a show in the USA and broadcasted it as well.
Filmbits and interviews I understand, not sure.
It should be from Giants Stadium, Est Rutherford, NJ.
cant remember having seen such a thing.
Anyone?
March 25th, 2013 at 15:00ad ” Water”
I read 1 or 2 issues later Jon is seen in a groupshot on the original albumcover of the soundtrack.
March 28th, 2013 at 21:30In case this slipped your attention.
DC in conversation with producer Keith Olsen.

March 29th, 2013 at 10:51Hey Priest, not sure about the Limelight issue. Doesn’t ring a bell. I lost track of most of my nostalgic memory and info regarding such specifics years back when I moved and packed up all my stuff and stored it away. Haven’t been involved in all those specifics for quite some time now and don’t remember half the inner-workings of all the connections in the Purple realm anymore. Since I have pretty much stopped collecting all things Purple from the past and haven’t been doing all the research I used to, I have gone cold with all the info these days. My old tired brain has faded. As for Simon referring to me as a she, that was probably at my first correspondence with DTB. I have missed the last 5 years issues. As I stated, I have backed way off on my involvement. I submitted some info and reviews to the MAG a few times back then, but haven’t corresponded in quite a while. Actually the last thing I submitted was the info and some pictures of a rare (only one in existence) completely alternate version of the sleeve for the Gillan Glory Road album that wasn’t used a couple of years back. I don’t know if he ever published the info in the DTB mag or not. He thanked me for it and it was supposed to be issued. My subscription expired prior and I never followed up…..
CheerZ?!
March 30th, 2013 at 04:06If Coverdale is talking to Blackmore as well as Page, I wonder if those two could work together? That could be interesting, especially Page producing, working on Blackmore’s sound…
April 1st, 2013 at 06:07I’m surprised Blackmore is talking to anyone and I thought he was through with hard rock/rock&roll/heavy metal, forever.
Jimmy Page will still be trying to put a band together from his deathbed, no offence. Maybe he thinks life is long and there’s time to kill today.
I love Page and Blackmore but I could never see them collaborating on anything. I’ve been wrong before about musicians and their egos. Time will tell.
