The Parallax Effect of Long Hair
In December 2012 Ian Gillan provided a keynote speech at the ICD Annual Conference on Cultural Diplomacy. Titled “The Parallax Effect of Long Hair” it covered some of Ian’s experiences and how his haircut was at the time.

January 22nd, 2013 at 18:33I found this speech very entertaining. Enough that I had to post it on my facebook page for all my non purple friends to enjoy.
January 22nd, 2013 at 20:15too cool…
January 22nd, 2013 at 21:24I to went to school in 85 and also grew my hair really long down to the middle of my back . I also had a worn motor scooter black leather jacket that the straight laced teachers i had to deal with at the time gave me a hard, just so many reasons to send me down to the principle and give me detention or etc. So like big ian that is when i became a rebal, ironically that was the year i saw purple on their reunion tour at the spectrum in philly, thank you ian its only rock n roll .
January 22nd, 2013 at 23:22Nice speech.. very enjoyable … Highly recommended to anyone even if you are not a Deep Purple fan !! Very good Mr. Gillan !
January 23rd, 2013 at 00:04“IT’S ROCK N ROLL, STRANGE THINGS HAPPEN”…………….well said Ian…an entertaining speech!
January 23rd, 2013 at 01:41This is GREAT. I could listen to Ian for hours and hours. What a storry teller. World class. Just like your singing in the old days. More please.
January 23rd, 2013 at 16:38The strangest thing is Ian had his longest hair while he was in a band called Black Sabbath and then he cut it way back to rejoin Deep Purple. Now that was a really weird moment for those of us that remember that far back. Still, Perfect Strangers was the greatest album they have done besides maybe Made in Japan and In Rock. So long hair or short hair, leather or lace, just glad Purple came back around with Mark Two, one, two and then finally that third time. It was good while it lasted.
January 28th, 2013 at 05:48Perfect Strangers, welcome to 28 years later. I’ll quit while I’m ahead. 🙂
January 31st, 2013 at 00:48You know what Priest? Every MK has been good while it lasted. Only Mark-I could live without the rest. They were the first. MK-I was the true original. All the rest couldn’t exist without the other. I’m just thankful they have continued to keep on keepin’ on in one shape or another. It has all been awesome and in the end, isn’t it about the music? There isn’t one Deep Purple album I don’t thoroughly enjoy. PERIOD. That says a lot. The best one or worst one? To each his own.

January 31st, 2013 at 02:47When I witnessed the Gillan band live in Sydney back in 1982, he still wore his mane then. That was when Janick Gers just joined, I was a little disappointed Bernie Torme wasn’t on guitar. Gillan went off big time & was looking rather inebriated to say the least! Great pub gig though & not long after that he was in Sabbath, going off big time on the Born Again album!
February 2nd, 2013 at 05:57The following year 1984, he was back in Sydney for the Purple reunion, minus the mane! Still awesome vocally though & that was all that mattered!
Showing my youth again, saw Purple before the very first Gillan break up. Long Beach Arena in the year of our Lord 1973. This was somewhere after the Made in Japan Tour, Nigel knows all the dates. It was the second greatest show I have seen. Ian trimmed up the hair but was with beard. Figuring this was after WDWTWA. Blackmore was completely and totally Lights Out on Mary Long. The show opened with Rory Gallagher followed by the Fleetwood Mac Band without the chicks. Wish all of you could have been there what a show. They say non stop touring burned out the band, but man were they incredible. Dialed in.
March 9th, 2013 at 04:46purrfect stranger @17,
Man I envy you getting to see the Original MK2. My first Purple gig was during the BURN era at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Though I was already a fan at just 12 years of age back in ’68 when HUSH hit the airwaves, I didn’t begin the Concert circuit until around ’72 when I was 16 and saw ‘Captain Beyond’ promoting their debut album along with ‘Wishbone Ash’ promoting Argus. Purple didn’t come to my area until after MK3, so I missed out on MK2 and MK1 for that matter. But I have seen every MK since except for the JLT version. Been an awesome ride and thankfully, it ain’t over yet.
