Nice! The “real” Rainbow with the late great Dio and Powell and they are doing Stargazer and A light in the black… Rainbow Rising, it doesnt get much better than that! Long live Rock´n Roll!!!!

Simply stunning ! and just a reminder of how good Rainbow really were for those of us lucky enough to have seen them,a reminder as well of the talent one man has for whatever reason let go to waste
for the best part of nearly 3 decades which is just a shameful waste.

    purplepriest1965 says:

    It sounds ” cleaned up”.
    Or not?

Is this a trailer for something else? : )

I miss this MK of Rainbow more than any incarnation of DP except MKII……wow good stuff..I was 20 yrs old at the time and this was my music 🙂 I saw this MK only once, they backed up for REO Speedwagon so there was no rainbow background 🙁 ,and the JLT Rainbow twice, the JLT MK was very good but no comparison to Ritchie, Ronnie & Cozy…sadly missed but great memories

    Cheers

    EVIDENCE:
This video is not ready for germany, because it contains music for what the german GEMA has gave no rights.

I hate this GEMA bullshit …

    Long Live Rainbow!

I think it´s about Time to us all to have the Celebration Day of Our very own RAINBOW.
This stuff comes, if I´m not wrong from the band´s Australian trek in November 1976.
Have seen this way back in about 1988 or so.

In my old VHS copy Ronnie tells very much in detail of THE Rainbow (the lighting structure).
What there´s not, is the voiceover by Ritchie.

It´s always so elevating to hear these Gentlemen talk themselves.

Don´t know anything about the managements in concern, but PLEASE release this material Officially.

    Cheers!

  23. 23
    Purpoz says:

    Wow!

Takes me right back to Nov 1976 in Perth, although the show I saw was one for the ‘listeners’ – no smashing, no encore. I was an impressionable teenager, and these guys made a BIG impression…

  24. 24
    Rajaseudun Rampe says:

Couldn’t help laughing. Theose were the days. Quite horrible by today’s standards. Funny but horrible. Totally outdated.

  25. 25
    Lionel Bouvet says:

Nice to see this video, but times have changed! When we see Ritchie destroying his guitar, what a pity! He’s absolutely ridiculous!

  26. 26
    LRT says:

It may have originally been made to ‘promote the band’ but the bootleg has been going around for moons. Can we agree this is still a bootleg, just an aftermarket one claiming officiality, no matter who filmed it when? Come on! Tower of Bable audio footage, Houston and European footage if I remember right. I’m becoming more and more disillusioned with DPO. They know people know better and seem to be out to grab those who don’t, but the ones who do would still like some significant work done, please, our money is greener, believe me. Man alive! It’s the way they advertise as if nobody gathers material but them. This is nothing against any idividuals in the DPO camp, just take your lumps as a label if you want ads to go out to the internet fan base, please. And it doesn’t matter what they taped, it wasn’t done professionally looking at all, no matter what year it was. Perhaps that and RIGHTS are what kept it under their pillow. It almost plays out like this was just recently uncovered stuff.

    Andy Mac says:

Lucky enough to see Rainbow in 76 and if that promo was based from the Melbourne show in Australia, I was there second row from the front and centre, plus it was my 20th birthday that night. Memories…Long Live R&R

    clive robey says:

Therefore ‘A Light In The Black’ live does exist. All it needs now is cleaning up and releasing. Audio or video, I don’t mind. Just do it!

    purplepriest1965 says:

    @ 24

    What are you talking about?

  31. 31
    Ljubisa says:

All is great, and I enjoyed it… but regarding drum “solo”…
Only one and only is best drum player, all other just bangs on drums.
Do I need to say his name?
well, Ian Paice… Mr Ian Paice
Never tired to hear him, over and over and over, allways notice something new, no matter how many times I heard 1 same piece.
Wish you all best Mr Ian Paice.

  32. 32
    Roberto says:

@28 Yes, Paice is unbeatable….more refined and peculiar than Cozy powell or Jhon Bonham for example…but not everyone, among listners, can recognize particulars of the drumming…

  33. 33
    purplepriest1965 says:

    @ 25

There several Light In The Black versions available, some better than others.

Forgot the exact recordings so for the moment I cant tell you the dates/names.

But I always thought this is a nice one.

@24: you must be living on Mars or on the dark side of the Moon. Rainbow at that time was, and today still is lightyears above 99,9% of the rest at that time and even today. Give me a timemachine and I wold go back any day. Now it’s DVD time – Rainbow Munic calling 🙂

    yoyok joko (kolektorkaset.com) says:

Video is great, Cozy Powell full Power, Ritchie who likes the sound of the middle east and Ronnie never die, God was calling him to be a judge audition music in heaven, because God confused to decide who the best vocalist in heaven? just kidding. . .

    buttockss says:

@24 horrible to today’s standards really !. Look at the acts today and compare. Lady gaga, Justin beber, you can laugh at them today and call that music. Now what rainbow did was exactly what acts like kiss and sabbath did music with a little adventure .

    purplepriest1965 says:

This one sounds to me as something Blackmore could been inspired to take something from :

    @24
Saying something is horrible by present-day standards is a bit like using lettis as a benchmark for ecsquisite flavour, isn’t it?

  40. 40
    Anthony says:

@24 your understanding of music in general is rather pathetic to say the least…enough said

    a bloke from wales says:

stop arguing and being petty ,you all sound like the members of a 70s rock band that reformed in the 80s. just get a full length film out of the 76 tour

    Bob says:

Was from Australian tour me thinks, 1420 3XY , a Melbourne AM radio station that l listened to when l was a lad is pictured in this video. Was busting to see them at the time 1976 when the band came to Australia.
3XY had a phone up competition to win tickets. Spent all night trying to win some but never did and never went to the concert because l had no money to buy em.
    Spuwin to this day now.
    Missed the classic line up.:(

  43. 43
    MacGregor says:

Bob @ 42 – Excellent comment, 3XY radio I listened to all the time as a rocking teenager in the early to mid 70’s. A classic station it was & without sounding nostalgic, they don’t have radio stations like that anymore. But then again, we don’t have music like that anymore either!
My brother & other guys I know, witnessed that classic version of Rainbow live in Sydney at the Horden Pavillion. Not sure if that gig was the one were the fans trashed the place after a ‘no encore”, I think it was! I have always regretted not travelling on the train for 8 hours to Sydney to see them. Classsic Tull lineup were there in ’77 also, always regret missing that one as well!

  44. 44
    MacGregor says:

Actually, I forgot to mention in my previous post, 3XY radio was where I first heard ‘Man On A Silver Mountain’! Every time I hear that song & riff, it returns me to my bedroom on that night, glued to that classic rock radio station! I was never worried about Blackmore leaving Purple anymore, after hearing that song! It was bliss!

  45. 45
    Drdp says:

    The BEST version of RAINBOW.
Ritchie, Ronnie & Cozy ……a triumvirate of power never bettered and rarely matched.

  46. 46
    cyclone says:

This band tops Led Zep at any and all levels. No matter which Mk Rainbow line up…. they where simply ahead of their time. I saw them twice and RB was at his best. He played like a beast.

    dibbdroid says:

@42 This is from Melbourne 1976, I have it on a boot DVD somewhere

    purrfect stranger says:

Saw this band three times. Santa Monica Civic. a place called Starlight Amphitheater Burbank and also Shrine Auditorium. Greatest show I have ever seen was at Santa Monica, Purple second at the Long Beach Arena. If you never had the chance to see Stargazer or Tarot Woman live I am so sorry for you but Thats Life as Sinatra would say. Words could not describe these shows. For the record the only reason REO headlined was because it was decided by Ritchie he wanted to play second. There is a story about that tour Ritchie could tell you about a knock down drag out fight with REO management talk to him he has the story. One last comment Gates of Babylon was played on this last tour at the SHRINE.

  49. 49
    purplepriest1965 says:

    What’s the shrine?

Remember I was blown away when I first saw the Tchaikovski drum solo, on [German show] Rockpalast.

  51. 51
    stoffer says:

@48. thanks for the bits of information, although I don’t think there is much of chance of ever asking RB about the fight w/REO…ha ha….Gates Of Babylon…WOW…now there a f***ing HARD ROCK song….TURN IT WAY UP

    cheers

  52. 52
    Kevin says:

@48: I have searched for ages for the alleged live versions of Gates of Babylon, and unfortunately, I have yet to find ANY of the reported versions of Gates which Rainbow were supposed to have played live on the 1978 tour…

According to sources, Rainbow were supposed to have played Gates live at the following venues/dates:

Shrine Auditorium – Los Angeles on 18/5/78
Capitol Theatre – Passaic NJ on 2/6/78
Paradise Theatre – Boston on 21/8/78

However, until I actually hear any recordings, I am going to remain sceptical as to whether Gates was 100% definitely played live.

  53. 53
    purrfect stranger says:

I have five witnesses to G of Babylon performed live at the Shrine Auditorium in L A. Just so you guys know they also played ironically LA Connection as well. It kind of makes sense NO? Ritchie had those footpedals specifically used for that solo. It was a fantastic night but unfortunately it was the last tour for this one of a kind band. Someone informed me that Ritchie and Ronnie were no longer traveling in the same vehicles so things were not all peaches and cream. But the show still was brilliant.
