14 tracks ready for the new album
As the band has gathered in a Russian studio to rehearse for the upcoming tour, Roger Glover spoke to ITAR-TASS. Here are the highlights (in reverse translation, so take it with a grain of salt):
- There are 14 tracks ready for the new album, probably 11 or 12 of them will pass the final selection and end up being released.
- Release date being considered is somewhere in mid-February 2013.
- There are several album titles being considered, but for now they shall remain secret.
- Regarding connection with Bob Ezrin: Steve Morse met him back when he was in Kansas.
- The band wanted to perform new tracks on this tour, but its management and the record company opposed due to fear of reduced record sales.
Thanks to Andrey Gusenkov for the info and to Romanio for the picture.
“…Fear of Reduced Record Sales…”
This certainly does not suggest confidence in the new material.
October 23rd, 2012 at 16:18Management and the record company opposed due to fear of reduced record sales?
If the music is good, wouldn’t it increase sales?
I am confused.
October 23rd, 2012 at 16:37Voy a comprarlo, sin embargo no me emociona mucho, espero que haya un cambio radical en el sonido y no parezca “Ian Gillan Band” como los anteriores.
October 23rd, 2012 at 16:39So, this will be another tour with golden oldies???
Why plan a tour a few months before the release of a new album????
Eric
October 23rd, 2012 at 16:49Ouch, what happened to Gillan’s face?
October 23rd, 2012 at 16:5914? 7 Good ones used to be enough.
October 23rd, 2012 at 17:33Waiting for another concert in Cesaria, Israel.
October 23rd, 2012 at 17:40The article also contains the interesting fact – they are making a new setlist for this tour – not with the new ones from upcoming album, but… we will see. 🙂
October 23rd, 2012 at 17:58Ritchie finally caught him in the alley
October 23rd, 2012 at 18:53# 5
For his age, Gillan still looks fine !!!!!!
Cheers and bottoms up !
October 23rd, 2012 at 19:287 tracks was when albums were 40 minutes. They cram 70 minutes on most CDs. I think Ian is turning Japanese.
October 23rd, 2012 at 19:33The songs have to remain secret. Okay.
I wouldn’t go so far to be disillusioned but I can’t deny that it has some strange smack to go on tour like this. Many bands offer at least some sort of appetizer (a few song- or film-snippets from the new stuff or whatever) in advance of a release.
October 23rd, 2012 at 20:14Dear management and record company, don’t you think we expect the band to play new songs live? Be sure I won’t see Deep Purpe this year in Paris.
I’ll buy the LP and if it sounds good, I hope they ll come back to France
October 23rd, 2012 at 20:17The reason they haven’t recorded a new record is that generally these bands sell concert tickets by performing a greatest hits set. So even with a new album, how many new songs will they inject into their live set? 4 or 5 at most…if we’re lucky.
I do think they could use their Rock and Roll HOF deal and the Remachined release to market this tour in a way that could at least create respectable album sales. But that would take management and promotional skills their management team is sorely lacking.
October 23rd, 2012 at 20:42I think we should take this with a grain of salt as suggested, bad translation being what it is… I’m hoping Steve Morse is right.. “Lots and Lots of good stuff” in fact too much to put on the album as he said.. Never heard him really being that positive about a Purple album…. I have a positive vibe about the album..I guess when they start doing press for it we’ll know more about how they feel for the thing..
October 23rd, 2012 at 21:23I like the Morse-era albums and have found a few tracks on each to really like. But I haven’t loved a DP album since _|_ and I hope — after five years off — they make something on a par with _|_.
Oh, and what’s with keeping the band from playing new material? Album sales? I thought only pop stars sold more than a few albums these days anyway.
They must know what they’re doing.
October 23rd, 2012 at 21:30Like I have stated over and over and over and over…..
Their management team and promoters SUCK!!! They should already be promoting the Next Awesome Studio Album from the Greatest Rock Band in the World. But instead it will go by the wayside and not even a tune from it to promote live. That is amazing. They are going out on tour anyway. That would be FREE promotion from the Band. Not to whip a dead horse but, that’s another reason they should graciously accept the RRHOF nomination if it happens. Much better promotion than their promotion team. Exposure, exposure, exposure…..that’s what works.
Oi vay…..
CheerZ?
October 23rd, 2012 at 21:36@ 5 alcohol intake over years will make your face bloated, but you can see were getting near the end by the looks of all the members in the band……. at least he got his weight back, a little worried there for a while.
October 23rd, 2012 at 22:08Promoting new stuff gave us Live In Concert 1972 for example.
I know way back there was no Internet and all that but……..
If they would play, I m with Tracy on this, this for at least without the oldies ofcourse people would know that there will be another album.
Ofcourse, unlike earlier days , Gillan would sound better on the studio results than live, so people would still buy the new album if :
1 The songs caught them by the balls. Like with Machinehead and In Rock(….)
2 the production of the album would not suck again!
Probable disadvantage of playing it advance is that people will never buy the album because the songs did not have appeal live.
Why not playing the clubcircuit, combined with a copy of the new album sold at those places.
DP swim in money, so why dont they hire someone who makes the cd really not breakable?
They should release and play the music when they are proud of it.
Why do other rockacts release albums and still SELL?
Are DP fans too poor to spare some cash for a good album?
October 23rd, 2012 at 22:46If they would play, I m with Tracy on this, this for at least without the oldies ofcourse people would know that there will be another album.
I forget to add :
That they at least should promote this for a long time without succumbing into their ” MachineHead ComfortZone” .
Or be honest and tell us in advance you ll very probably play another oldies set again becauser that (…)pays the bills.
October 23rd, 2012 at 22:48@17 their management sucks ass ! you re right!
October 24th, 2012 at 00:36The band does not fear that their new songs will go over well. They fear that the new songs will get bootlegged and posted online and people will just download the boots rather than buy the album.
They are not the only band who has voiced this concern.
Me, I’m just psyched that this thing might be coming out so soon!! Woohoo!
October 24th, 2012 at 03:31According to Swedish website “Rocknytt” (Rock News in English) which is sort of a Swedish Blabbermouth, Roger Glover was quoted (from the same interview as above I might add) saying that the band will perform one or two songs from the new album on the Russian Tour.
I guess we’ll know tonight!
October 24th, 2012 at 06:36[…] Deep Purple have recorded 14 tracks for their 19th studio album, due out next year. Of those, it’s likely a dozen will appear on the record, which is pencilled in for a February release. The band are considering several titles but haven’t revealed any details. [The Highway Star] […]
October 24th, 2012 at 07:39so, it looks like i will be travelling to germany [at great expense] to see the same old, same old we have been subjected to for a few years at least. Sh*t i’ll still go, i’ll enjoy it, but surely a little teaser of the new stuff would not go a miss!
October 24th, 2012 at 08:44New set list: that’s good news. Isn’t it? You all say ‘yes’. Stop whining. I’m pretty sure they’ll be playing one or two new songs as well. Stop whining. The band is in good shape. Gillan looks quite ok to be a 67 year old hard working heavy drinker. Stop whining. This will be their last album. Let’s be happy that the last one wasn’t Rapture. We still got one more to enjoy. Stop whining. Life is short.
October 24th, 2012 at 10:02“The band wanted to perform new tracks on this tour, but its management and the record company opposed due to fear of reduced record sales.”
October 24th, 2012 at 11:21And the band had no say in this or no b*lls to stand up for their music? This bites. I was about to pull the trigger on the concert tickets, half sure that new stuff was going to be played, but now I’m not so sure.
As I read your comments, one thing is crossing my mind…. ARE THERE ANY DEEP PURPLE FANS HERE??? Haters, haters & haters…with a small dose of malcontents…that’s what you are, people! Aren’t you all happy that your favourite band is releasing a new album? Or maybe it’s not your favourite band, then WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? I cannot understand this…. everyone of you knows better what Deep Purple should or shouldn’t do. And this is not a fan’s business IMO. Fans have to wait for their heroes to make a move… A constructive critics? Yes, always!!! The fans should talk about their favourites, argue about it, etc… and protect them from haters!!! Thank God Deep Purple are still there, ’cause there’s no band like this around anymore! Cherish and protect Deep Purple, you call yourselves fans, for God’s sake! Cheers.
October 24th, 2012 at 11:52The first report of recording … What a long waiting time for get informations … :
14 new tracks … wow … can´t wait till Feb.2013 … but … the f…ing management: ”
… The band wanted to perform new tracks on this tour, but its management and the record company opposed due to fear of reduced record sales. ”
Maybe 11 or 12 songs for the album. Why not a double CD ?
… all these commercial reasons really f…s me off … sorry friends !!
Okay guys … Deep Purple will be for the first time (since many years) in Bremen on Nov. 18th.

Ian Gillan looks just fine to me.. not so thin as of lately. He’s 67 now and everyone would enjoy looking like that at that age.
October 24th, 2012 at 16:06@31, thanks for schooling the un-keen! I noticed right off the bat it was the pic itself that was bad imaging. I simply can’t believe some of the garbage people say.
@Priest, since when do over a million sold(within the first year) constitute no sales of one’s latest record?
October 24th, 2012 at 16:53Thanks Nick, but he still looks exactly the same on that photo in larger format. He looks like being swollen.
October 24th, 2012 at 18:22Isn’t it about time we had a Steve Morse DP tour… just forget everything that Richie contributed and pull from the 4, soon to be 5 fabulous albums since SM stepped in…?
Ok, maybe that’s crazy talk, I mean keep Lazy in the set list, maybe one or two others, but a tour with 2 or 3 tracks from each of these albums would be so awesome!!
I certainly don’t need to hear Smoke on the Water again… but Ted the Mechanic, yes please!
October 24th, 2012 at 19:15Kraatzy, if you hate the band so much, have you got nothing better to do thsn constantly hang out on this site?? Weird! by the way, that photo was taken through a double enforced window from a studio the other side. (id be interested to know how they got it!) Gillans in great health. as for the people not coming to the upcoming shows-good. if you hate the band so much, stop coming on this site, im sick of your constant whinging. BORING!!
October 24th, 2012 at 22:20Lo esperamos con ansia el nuevo album ,debe de ser de buena calidad como la gran mayoría de sus trabajos anteriores.PD Gillan parece estar hinchado o no se la foto.

October 25th, 2012 at 09:11Yesss, lets be happy !! # 26 is right ! Life is short and I LOVE the music of DP !!
October 25th, 2012 at 10:39Steady on chaps ! Lets just see what turns up next year . Lets be patient ! My feeling is it will be worth waiting for & perhaps quite surprising too . Any chance of someone doing a Russian to English translation of Roger’s Russian article ?
October 25th, 2012 at 11:49Waiting in anticipation of DP returning to OZ next year !!!!

October 25th, 2012 at 13:14Ted
Why do they continue to ignore the American audience. They play all over Europe with only a handful of shows in the States.
October 25th, 2012 at 13:15I have full confidence that the album will be quite good. I for one have no complaint about any of their albums except for S&M and that’s only due to the fact JLT was involved. Not hating JLT, just don’t care for his style in Purple. Good record, bad vibe. I believe Bob Ezrin will bring something new and positive to their approach and finished product. And, I actually believe the album will excite the band and inject some gumption for future effort. Yes I know. I’ve heard…’they are old’. Well, Jon Lord was older. He did it till he died. Not with Purple, though but he did it. Alice Cooper is their age. He says he will go on that stage even it requires a wheel chair. It’s what they do. If Purple did a better job with promotion and management selection, they would also have a better outlook toward studio time and output. That’s where a little recognition and celebration from the R&R Hall of Shame (better late than never) is important. I suppose Alice Cooper sold out by showing up and taking the opportunity to not only soak up the attention and exposure, but rejoin with his old band mates for a historical performance on a grand scale? It a win win situation. It gave him an avenue to promote the fact that he is STILL AROUND, and it gave his fans a memorable moment to experience and enjoy. Win for him, win for the fans. He later was quite vocal in regards to the fact that the organization is really off the mark as far as how they have skipped over so many worthy bands such as Purple and expressed the fact that it is appalling and a crime. His shows sell out everywhere, and his record sales aren’t too shabby either. He plays songs from most of his 26 studio albums. YES…26!!!
There is no reason Purple can’t up their game except for lack of desire. Better decisions overall would probably allude to that outcome. Drop the ’70s’ rebellious attitude. They are in their 60s not 20s. Write good music, record it and play it LIVE. What else are they going to do? Roger Glover says he knows nothing else or better. The band needs to feed off of that….

October 25th, 2012 at 18:51Ok no new tunes on this tour. Then how about some great tunes that have been left off the set list for years. Rat Bat Blue? Speed King? Mary Long? Bad Attitude? Call Of The Wild? How about Burn for the first time with Ian on vocals?
October 25th, 2012 at 19:59@ 51
Yeah, let us pick songs with a lot of screaming like Bloodsucker.
October 25th, 2012 at 20:28In EKATERINBURG RUSSIA DEEP PURPLE played as hard to sing tracks ( I really didn’t expect this , it’s amazing if we know what we know..) as:
October 25th, 2012 at 21:191) FIREBALL -AS THE OPENINIG,
2) THE BATTLE RAGES ON ( first time since december 2010 in Italy, Bologna, I thought that it was last time)
– Well done Guys -even if we don’t have new tracks.
I predicted we would not see a new album in 2009…2010…2011…and 2012.
Now that the investment has been made, a release is finally likely in 2013. With “11 or 12” tracks, this record will be among the longest of Deep Purple albums and probably their final recorded musical statement.
October 26th, 2012 at 02:16Hello Deep purple fans?
Read 51 messages so far , well if u are a deep fans just read the following
# 22-26-28-34-37-38-43 and 47 if u like Alice. The rest is just CRAP.
Let’s thanks them to be STILL here and to give us good music.
Maybe they reharsed NEW-OLD material to give us a bit of change before the NEW ALBUM TOUR which will start next year after the release. Isn’t it what they should do? Why give new songs to all the Pr..s , ( ic is missing) who are going to record it and put on you tube the next day?
New album – new tour that’s what the fans (real) want.
Maybe Ian just wake up and like a 67 years young man, you don’t look so good
especially if the night before you have met old russians vodka friends at the hotel bar.
Cheers.
Long live DP.
Richard.

October 26th, 2012 at 09:46Shame on the management and record companies! And you guys – Ian, Roger, Don, Ian, Steve… there are 14 new songs and I’m sure the fans want to hear some of them when they are paying much money to enjoy this great band live! Haven’t you earned enough money over the years? Why do you think the people wouldn’t buy the cd when you will present the songs live before? Then tell me – what is the sense of the upcoming tour!??
This would be the 5th Deep Purple concert I visit but that’s a big disappointment!!! I become frustrated when I think on the fact that there is new material but you guys would hold the songs back to get not in conflict whith the money-dreams of your management.
October 26th, 2012 at 10:26In hope there will be a rethinking – see you (maybe-.-) on 26th November in Leipzig…

October 26th, 2012 at 12:48@ 55:
YouTube is about one of the best platforms to promote music because literally millions of people visit this website every day. Do you really think that people who are interested in Purple’s music will stick with some poor live recordings? To this day I don’t understand why the guys in Purple won’t use this website to their advantage and publish some clips, especially when they don’t play their new songs live. In part those guys in the audience who put their live recordings on YouTube keep many people who can’t attend the shows up to date. I’m thankful for that. I bet that everybody in this forum visited YouTube at least once to look for what Purple has been doing the last few years. Those who followed the link from Purplepriest (# 49) will know what they were about a few days ago.
The only bad thing is that some people put songs from official CD’s or DVD’s on YouTube. This actually affects sales negatively.
October 26th, 2012 at 14:10I think the reason for no new songs on the upcoming tour is that they’re afrald people will download them or put them on youtube.
October 27th, 2012 at 00:08Unfortunetly, this ain’t the old days when bands would break in new material on tour before the album came out.
Enjoyed interviewing Ian G. on WJRW radio in Michigan this past Friday about the album, world, tour, Jon Lord, JCS, etcetera. The link is: http://www.1340wjrw.com/Article.asp?id=2561346&spid=34238

October 28th, 2012 at 08:06@James Gemmell,
Nice one! Thanks for sharing, going to get it heard on some other avenues for ya!
October 28th, 2012 at 08:08@ Purplepriest1965:
Indeed not bad at all, if they put more of these rarely played songs in their new live set, then i might consider catching them on the road.
Maby Amsterdam this year if i can find people who would like to join me.
And i must say, Gillan sounds great, almost like in the late 90ties which to me is one of his best period in his later career run.
Maby this time a setlist that’s not highly resting on the Machine Head album.

Slave?
Watching too much reruns of Sothpark ? : )
October 29th, 2012 at 10:05Btw, I think AC/DC did that job.
October 29th, 2012 at 10:08And if the sales of the Morse era albums were so good, why do they play almost nothing of it?
October 29th, 2012 at 10:09For me the disappointment is the lack of songs from the last 4 albums, I’m happy enough to hear the old songs, if they can’t play the new songs yet I guess that is ok.
October 30th, 2012 at 08:22But there has been a whole lot of music recorded in the last 16 years, and to cover it with a 2 minute instrumental and well dressed guitar is to whitewash over everything that Steve has recorded with the band.
These are modern day classics, and deserve to be in the set every bit as much as Hard lovin Man, et al.
Sometime I feel Like Screaming…..
The biggest news is “purple has a record company that promotes their material??” I had no idea.
October 30th, 2012 at 13:24I hope that they come back to Mexico with the new album. As fast as the album be available, I will get it and to listen it with friends and some beers!
November 1st, 2012 at 19:33I’m looking forward to the show in Amsterdam december 4th, and I’m happy to read, the new album is about to be released in feb ’13.
November 2nd, 2012 at 22:50If it appears to be their last, I hope it will be a real stunning one, with some influences of everything Purple made all over the years!… And depending on the contributions of Steve Morse so far, I expect it all to be sounding fresh and heavy and..and… well, mmmm… STUNNING! not underestimating the roles of Ian, Roger, Ian and Don, of course! The best to you all, YYEEEOOOOOWWWWW!
I think purple should hire fluidhead for their supporting act and have them play the new purple tunes. No one would be the wiser, plus crowd reactions would be an indication of which 7 tunes would make the cut. Right Dave?
