August 18th, 2012 at 21:38chickenfoot would be AWESOME if they had a real singer…………regardless this CD will be in my collection..lots of respect for DP by the other muscians, very cool
August 18th, 2012 at 21:45cheers
I’m sorry but The Flaming Lips doing SMOKE ON THE WATER just ruined the whole thing for me. Personally I think a tribute album is a bad idea. How can you improve on perfection.
August 18th, 2012 at 22:44It”s great to hear how many bands purple influenced…from the musicians themselves!!
August 19th, 2012 at 00:19I was skeptical when I first heard about this project. But damn, these remakes sound incredible. And to include When A Blind Man Cries. Santana sounds like a man possessed. Looking forward to this release.
August 19th, 2012 at 01:41The video was great until the lips destroyed smoke on the water. Luckily Carlos saved the day.
August 19th, 2012 at 05:50I disagree stoffer hager is awesome in Chickenfoot!
August 19th, 2012 at 07:38It’s great that all these famous musicians show their love for the biggest band in the world and one of their most important records. But in my opinion those snippets clearly show that there isn’t a single guitarist who has the ability to play in the same league as the young Blackmore from the 70ies. It is easy to play many notes but Blackmore didn’t do that and obviously nobody understood. There is a certain beauty to the few bluesy notes he plays when soloing (apart from Highway Star of course where he plays arpeggios) and that would have been the task to all the guitarists when playing on such a tribute album. Everything else is pure crap to be honest because it sounds out of place. This has nothing to do with personal preference, taste or that I want them to copy Blackmore, it’s only the way of playing which is distinctive. I don’t belong to the kind of people who don’t embrace new versions of old material. I think it’s really hard to do justice and bring in something new to such an iconic record. But from time to time it doesn’t hurt to take a listen and learn why the original thing sounds that good.
August 19th, 2012 at 10:29Yeah guys
MACHINE HEAD is a K I L L E R A L B U M
and
it was very very time the tribute this killer dEEp PuRpLe album.
But please don´t forget the Deep Purple IN ROCK album, with was T H E FIRST HARD ROCK ALBUM.
What an awesome setlist and what an awesome list of awesome musicians
Only the new version of SOTW makes me some disconcerting, but Carlos Santana recoups it into the right way.
And then the KILLER METALLICA version of WABMC.
And now – ladys and gentleman – were are in joyful anticipation for the new (hopefully)
awesome album from the grandmasters of themselves: D E E P P U R P L E

August 19th, 2012 at 11:38Not interested…..
I’ll wait to see a tribute album with new rock bands (like Wolfmother) and i’ll upload it.
Not like on this where you have the most “metal” oriented bands destroying a classic album.
August 19th, 2012 at 12:41Thanks for posting. This is a great appreciation of one of the greatest albums ever. It shows how enduring and deep the impact of Machine Head is on some of the most successful and respected musicians.
August 19th, 2012 at 16:48Excellent! I’ll only have to use the FF button once. When the Flaming Lips appear, that is. Obviously.
August 19th, 2012 at 19:25so Hagar is not a real singer? I don’t know who’s one then….
August 20th, 2012 at 11:17It seems ironic that whilst all these musicians respect and love Purple’s music that some of the rock press (e.g. Kerrang!) are very dismissive of their music. Led Zep and Sabbath are worshpped, but Purple are currently the poor relation. The innovation is outlined by Lars Ulrich in this clip whilst the funky groove is obviously championed by Chad Smith. I would love to see Purple given a little more respect in some of the magazines and press.
August 20th, 2012 at 18:20Never Before sounds amazing, worth the money alone!
August 20th, 2012 at 21:18#9 and 15, I respect your opinion about hagar I just don’t think he is the best singer chickenfoot could have found, (he does fit the supergroup singer though) as a front man he is quite good but IMHO he doesn’t do them justice especially on Highway Star but if you enjoy him thats cool….. btw I enjoyed his days w/Montrose
August 20th, 2012 at 21:40cheers
I dont understand why so many fans are negative about this release…This tribute isnt derogatory to this fantastic piece of music, it surely enriches its history to understand how influential DP have been. I always knew that, most musicians know that and this proves that.
August 21st, 2012 at 07:04christ almighty…………flaming lips version is criminal………they should be locked up for this
August 21st, 2012 at 12:57I’m boycotting the disc, but this video is fine by me, funny how that works. I’m not knocking the music, or the musicians, just the advertising. From the get go that has been my choice because I don’t buy based on thruth bending to be sold. I also haven’t heard the whole thing and don’t plan on it unless I’m somewhere where it’s being played. However, funny how after all of this I find what little to be heard from SOTW so far to be a brilliant idea if you ask me. It can only be a hit and miss project though, for all sorts of reasons, and we all have choices as consumers to buy into this or not. That should be fair enough, I wouldn’t slag the music or anyone on it, it’s not about that, it’s rather obviously the people behind releasing it that concern me. Several of these tracks were NOT recorded for the project or with it anywhere near in mind at the time they were recorded, yet they advertise them all to be. Can anyone get that clue and see why someone wouldn’t be into having their leg pulled to buy it? Do we not have the right to our own consumer ethics? Product knowledge is important, but perhaps not to labels and publicists or their research departments. If they’d gotten it right I would still wait till it’s not available only at CRM, which I detest way beyond this, you do my consumer math, but don’t foegt my efforts to support over the years. I’m gladly forming over for the collective value alone concerning the Anniversary boxed set, a legitimate product worth every penny, but plenty of people disagree with that too…. fair enough!
August 21st, 2012 at 17:40purple doesn”t need respect from the press or mags……they get it from other musicians!!!!!!
August 21st, 2012 at 23:50Why is Glenn Hughes on a Deep Purple Tribute album?
August 22nd, 2012 at 04:37I am interested in the magazine, that contains John Lord’s last ever interview. I just see this album as an “extra”. I think Lazy sounds amazing on the preview.
August 22nd, 2012 at 04:43Ps. “Sammy Hagar not a real singer??” Thats a pretty outrageous statement…
August 22nd, 2012 at 06:33Sorry to say that but for me it is musically very uninspiring tribute.
August 22nd, 2012 at 11:22It is great that for the first time first league musicans tried to cover purple songs but effect is below par. I know it is not easy to come up with something that would beat the originals as Purple musician-ship was beyond reach. But frankly you could expect from veterans such as Iron Maiden or Metallica much more imagination or creativity.
Purple indeed should be given so much more respect but in particular the one and only Mr Blackmore who always seems to be in the shadows of Page and Beck and Clapton. Its great to hear and read what other musicians have had to say about Purple and the album Machine Head.
August 22nd, 2012 at 16:13#Alan respect for DP in the press? Come on. It’s just not going to happen. Particularly in the states, where Deep Purple is mostly known only for one song and is excluded from the joke that is the Rock and Roll HOF. It is sad, but ignorance rules.
August 22nd, 2012 at 17:34Hi Chip
August 22nd, 2012 at 17:55Admittedly, it is unlikely to happen. Just wanted to raise it at this point in time though when this tribute is out. My point is that ignorance does exist about Purple’s continued contribution and legacy.
I agree with Anthony about Page etc. Blackmore is often side-stepped, although maybe a growing understanding of his significance is emerging.
Chrissy @ 23, good question. Hughes is there because he is the master at the “me, myself & I’ thing! Anything to be the spotlight kid again, & we know who the other spotlight kid is don’t we Mr JL Turner! Tribute rubbish! Re; the lack of press raves from certain people, Blackmore & Purple have always had plenty of press back in there day, & still today in certain areas, I have yet to notice a lack of respect or lack of press coverage in my history of the band! Especially the classic era! Cheers.
August 22nd, 2012 at 20:51Just one question – Why ?? It’s pathetic and will end in the bin within two weeks. I won’t buy it under any circumstances.
Now, after the remasters and now the 40th. ann. of Machine Head (5 cd set) (don’t need that either, btw) Who needs ‘cover versions’ by whoever….. ??
No offence to Mr. Hughes (he’s done tributes to ‘anyone’ as Alice Cooper and whotnot)
What did Zappa call his 1968 album ? ‘We’re Only In It For The Money’ Do you get it ??
Do we really need this ? My answer is NO NO NO !!
August 22nd, 2012 at 23:25probably a lot of us have similar mixed feelings about these tribute albums
in a way, it’s cool that the “who’s who” of modern hard rock and metal are paying tribute…
.. however … there’s the “what’s the point?” aspect, in that for those of us who love the original, there’s no way to touch it in terms of the singing and musicianship. Even hearing the Joe Bonamassa clip – he’s supposed to be the “best new kid on the block” – and I can hear how he doesn’t get the dynamics of Lazy – he’s palying the whole thing at one level in that general bar room blues way
I’ve always felt one of the coolest aspects of Purple Phenomenon was that they never got the accolades from the “hipster media”. We fans don’t need Purple to be on a top 5 list in Rolling Stone or for the band to be in the RnR Hall of Fame – we know Purple from In Rock up to BURN to be as good as it gets for rock and roll – who needs some douchebag “journalist” to try to understand that?
August 23rd, 2012 at 04:37“Why These Guys are not like the First Guys in R’n’R HOF I will never know” – Steve Lukhater. – RESPECT
August 23rd, 2012 at 10:38You know what I’m really looking forward to: The Concerto For Group And Orchestra studio record (besides the new album of the Purple heros themselves) – the last thing Jon Lord was part of musically. I terribly miss him.
August 24th, 2012 at 16:25The one surprising omission to me is that I would have expected that Ingwe would have been 1st in line to be on this album. I wonder if there is a story behind his absence.
August 24th, 2012 at 22:30@ 32 Agree!
August 25th, 2012 at 17:26@32 hipster media and douchebag journalist….ha ha I could not agree more!! well said
August 26th, 2012 at 16:57I agree w/ people stating that Purple aren´t respected in the rock press.
“The middle men” as Blackers call them, ie. media people, aren´t knowledgeable about music.
They refer to image, which I think is why Led Zep and Sabbath are revered compared to Purple.
Purple play music with no real image!
They are not devilworshippers or related w/ drugs. I think that is the reason, Deep Purple
aren´t written about and worshipped in the music press.
They simply play music. I have noticed that Deep Purple fans really are musiclovers.
They dig other kind of genres and know a great deal about music history.
August 28th, 2012 at 15:27I always think positive, one of nephews recently went to a Metallica concert, after he knew that they have done a cover from a BIGGER band, a band that they respect, he inmediatly asked me for DP music, he wants to know why Metallica shows respect and admiration to a band like this. That sounds pretty good to me, I think this is a nice way to expand the Purple fan base, introducing the music to a new generation of metal headbangers in the right way, because, as many of you would agree, once you have listened to purple music, you will stick to it. . . . . . .
September 6th, 2012 at 04:41It just arrived and is in my cd-player right now…. I’m enjoying every second of it thus far….
September 6th, 2012 at 15:21Just heard the version of Space Truckin’ by IRON MAIDEN. Worst version I’ve ever heard. Absolutely Terrible. There was no effort put into it at all.
September 8th, 2012 at 02:39dumb question…somebody please tell me who’s the lead vocals on the Steve Vai version of Highway Star?
December 8th, 2012 at 21:15@42: Glenn Hughes
