I’m sorry but The Flaming Lips doing SMOKE ON THE WATER just ruined the whole thing for me. Personally I think a tribute album is a bad idea. How can you improve on perfection.

August 19th, 2012 at 07:38It’s great that all these famous musicians show their love for the biggest band in the world and one of their most important records. But in my opinion those snippets clearly show that there isn’t a single guitarist who has the ability to play in the same league as the young Blackmore from the 70ies. It is easy to play many notes but Blackmore didn’t do that and obviously nobody understood. There is a certain beauty to the few bluesy notes he plays when soloing (apart from Highway Star of course where he plays arpeggios) and that would have been the task to all the guitarists when playing on such a tribute album. Everything else is pure crap to be honest because it sounds out of place. This has nothing to do with personal preference, taste or that I want them to copy Blackmore, it’s only the way of playing which is distinctive. I don’t belong to the kind of people who don’t embrace new versions of old material. I think it’s really hard to do justice and bring in something new to such an iconic record. But from time to time it doesn’t hurt to take a listen and learn why the original thing sounds that good.

Only the new version of SOTW makes me some disconcerting, but Carlos Santana recoups it into the right way.
And then the KILLER METALLICA version of WABMC.

August 20th, 2012 at 11:17It seems ironic that whilst all these musicians respect and love Purple’s music that some of the rock press (e.g. Kerrang!) are very dismissive of their music. Led Zep and Sabbath are worshpped, but Purple are currently the poor relation. The innovation is outlined by Lars Ulrich in this clip whilst the funky groove is obviously championed by Chad Smith. I would love to see Purple given a little more respect in some of the magazines and press.

I dont understand why so many fans are negative about this release…This tribute isnt derogatory to this fantastic piece of music, it surely enriches its history to understand how influential DP have been. I always knew that, most musicians know that and this proves that.

August 21st, 2012 at 12:57I’m boycotting the disc, but this video is fine by me, funny how that works. I’m not knocking the music, or the musicians, just the advertising. From the get go that has been my choice because I don’t buy based on thruth bending to be sold. I also haven’t heard the whole thing and don’t plan on it unless I’m somewhere where it’s being played. However, funny how after all of this I find what little to be heard from SOTW so far to be a brilliant idea if you ask me. It can only be a hit and miss project though, for all sorts of reasons, and we all have choices as consumers to buy into this or not. That should be fair enough, I wouldn’t slag the music or anyone on it, it’s not about that, it’s rather obviously the people behind releasing it that concern me. Several of these tracks were NOT recorded for the project or with it anywhere near in mind at the time they were recorded, yet they advertise them all to be. Can anyone get that clue and see why someone wouldn’t be into having their leg pulled to buy it? Do we not have the right to our own consumer ethics? Product knowledge is important, but perhaps not to labels and publicists or their research departments. If they’d gotten it right I would still wait till it’s not available only at CRM, which I detest way beyond this, you do my consumer math, but don’t foegt my efforts to support over the years. I’m gladly forming over for the collective value alone concerning the Anniversary boxed set, a legitimate product worth every penny, but plenty of people disagree with that too…. fair enough!

August 22nd, 2012 at 11:22It is great that for the first time first league musicans tried to cover purple songs but effect is below par. I know it is not easy to come up with something that would beat the originals as Purple musician-ship was beyond reach. But frankly you could expect from veterans such as Iron Maiden or Metallica much more imagination or creativity.
Purple indeed should be given so much more respect but in particular the one and only Mr Blackmore who always seems to be in the shadows of Page and Beck and Clapton. Its great to hear and read what other musicians have had to say about Purple and the album Machine Head.

I agree with Anthony about Page etc. Blackmore is often side-stepped, although maybe a growing understanding of his significance is emerging.
Chrissy @ 23, good question. Hughes is there because he is the master at the “me, myself & I’ thing! Anything to be the spotlight kid again, & we know who the other spotlight kid is don’t we Mr JL Turner! Tribute rubbish! Re; the lack of press raves from certain people, Blackmore & Purple have always had plenty of press back in there day, & still today in certain areas, I have yet to notice a lack of respect or lack of press coverage in my history of the band! Especially the classic era! Cheers.

in a way, it’s cool that the “who’s who” of modern hard rock and metal are paying tribute…
.. however … there’s the “what’s the point?” aspect, in that for those of us who love the original, there’s no way to touch it in terms of the singing and musicianship. Even hearing the Joe Bonamassa clip – he’s supposed to be the “best new kid on the block” – and I can hear how he doesn’t get the dynamics of Lazy – he’s palying the whole thing at one level in that general bar room blues way
I’ve always felt one of the coolest aspects of Purple Phenomenon was that they never got the accolades from the “hipster media”. We fans don’t need Purple to be on a top 5 list in Rolling Stone or for the band to be in the RnR Hall of Fame – we know Purple from In Rock up to BURN to be as good as it gets for rock and roll – who needs some douchebag “journalist” to try to understand that?

“The middle men” as Blackers call them, ie. media people, aren´t knowledgeable about music.
They refer to image, which I think is why Led Zep and Sabbath are revered compared to Purple.
Purple play music with no real image!
They are not devilworshippers or related w/ drugs. I think that is the reason, Deep Purple
aren´t written about and worshipped in the music press.
They simply play music. I have noticed that Deep Purple fans really are musiclovers.
They dig other kind of genres and know a great deal about music history.
August 28th, 2012 at 15:27I always think positive, one of nephews recently went to a Metallica concert, after he knew that they have done a cover from a BIGGER band, a band that they respect, he inmediatly asked me for DP music, he wants to know why Metallica shows respect and admiration to a band like this. That sounds pretty good to me, I think this is a nice way to expand the Purple fan base, introducing the music to a new generation of metal headbangers in the right way, because, as many of you would agree, once you have listened to purple music, you will stick to it. . . . . . .
