SOTW single
EMI will be releasing in UK a 7″ vinyl single of Smoke on The Water for the Record Store Day held this year on April 21. Simon Robinson reported a while ago that the version being prepared is from the 1972 In Concert show, newly remixed from 8 track masters. This print will be limited to 1000 copies.
Yeyyhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )
April 11th, 2012 at 23:19The 1972 In Concert performance of “Smoke on the Water” was lukewarm at best. Blackmore was still trying to find his footing, and at the time, the song still had not had the impact that it soon would have. It is an interesting version in that it was an embryonic version of a song that would become a staple across all subsequent incarnations of the band, but it is a sub-par version of Purple’s anthem. Perhaps the remix can breathe a little something more into it.
I would rather see a remix of “Smoke on the Water” from the second night in Osaka–the 16 August, 1972 version. This performance is nearly as good as the 15 August recording that found its way onto Made in Japan. From the ad-libbed snaps during the intro to Gillan singing, “All the children crying…” this is one of the best official recordings of the iconic song during a time when the band was at its height.
That aside, it is nonetheless good to see interest taken in the anniversary of the Riff That Conquered the World. I am sure that all 1000 copies will sell out before you can say, “Funky Claude”.

April 13th, 2012 at 11:42@2…T,
SOTW wasn’t what it is until After the release of ‘MADE IN JAPAN’. When Machinehead was released, SOTW wasn’t even noticed. Both the BBC and Japan versions of SOTW were basically pre-discovery. The venues were entirely different and so was the ambiance, lending to a different performance. Both performances were played relatively in the same time frame, just a couple of months apart and both prior to SOTW becoming the anthem it became after the release of ‘Made in Japan’. We will never know whether or not SOTW would be what it is today had they not offered the ‘World Wide Release’ of ‘Made in Japan’, which originally was to be Only released in Japan. The live version is what clicked and the rest is history. That being said…..
@4…marco conti,
The whole reason for this re-release of SOTW is due to the 40th Anniversary of the song which contains the riff that has actually defined the band and forever will stand alone in its ‘place in line’ as their historical anthem that accidentally fell in their lap, both because of the event that the song is about, and due to it being an afterthought due to pressure for one more track needed to complete the record. As tired as all of us Purple Fans are of that song, it’s significance is astronomical in the music realm and being they are doing a new album, this 40th Anniversary Promotion is a perfect fulcrum to piggy back on for some proper promotion, especially now that it appears they have brought Bob Ezrin on board as Producer. This is magnificent news. See Ya Michael Bradford. And that being said….
@5…stephen,
I would love to see the B-side be a Re-Recorded Studio version of SOTW from the present line-up, giving their twist to it, not duplicating it. This would be a great tie-in to the new album. It’s Purple’s Biggest Tool. USE IT!!!
Cheers
April 13th, 2012 at 15:57It might be a nice addittion to a collectors mountain of oddities but I d rather see a PROPER Anniversary Edition of IN ROCK(Better late than never) and Live In Japan.
Will we also see a 40th Anniversary edition of a single with Coronarias Redig as a b side, but with newly added vocals by ……..
Gillan?
Coverdale?
Hughes?
I still would not mind live versions of songs from S & M, HOBL., Place In Line, Sun Goes : ) Down and so on.
April 13th, 2012 at 21:08Whattttttt? Bob Ezrin as the producer of Deep Purple’s new album? Is that a really real news?
April 13th, 2012 at 23:12Happy Birthday Ritchie !!!!
April 14th, 2012 at 10:25PP,
They already did ‘Deluxe Editions’ of In Rock and Live in Japan. The Live in Japan was a 3 disk re-master which included the left off encores performances from the other dates in Japan included also. All that is missing is the Video from that gig.
Cheers

Why not try to remix the complete Deep Purple In Concert album?
Never had any trouble to be happy with the original but……
Maybe…….
An improvement as on Live In Japan is possible?
Hell, do something!
