Paice signature drum kit
Pearl Drums will launch Ian Paice signature drum kit on April 23, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Machine Head UK release. The kit will feature nine drums, including Masters Premium Legend Maple toms and bass drum, with the signature snare. All drums will feature “unique motif” inside and some will come in sizes unique to Ian’s kit, the same way as Pearl makes them for him, not available anywhere else in the world. As well as a standard front head, the kits will come supplied with a specially designed front bass drum head, which can be fitted to the kit or wall-mounted. Each set will come with a head signed by Paice, dedicated to the individual customer. Every kit will come tuned to Paice’s personal specification as well.
This will be a very limited edition as only 12 kits will be produced. The kits will be unveiled at the Drumwright in UK. The twelve customers who buy one of these sets will also be invited to a private dinner with Paice at The Crooked Billet in Henley-on-Thames, UK.

March 16th, 2012 at 18:09Personally I always thought that Ian’s early Ludwig kits sounded so much better than his later kits with Pearl, who are ordinary kits! Maybe I am spoiled by owning a classic Sonor kit. Pearl are over rated to me!

Great point Bob. I first learned to play on my neighbors Ludwig kit when I was a kid, and later learned that was Paicey’s brand at the time. Ludwig was my favorite drums along with Gretch back then. Way later on as an adult, I purchased my first kit which was a used old Pearl set due to the great price I got. Then I later purchased the Signature snare. I’d rather have a Ludwig set though….(I’m just a cheap bastard)…..

Deep Purple simply have been whatever line-up that’s calling themselves it, so rendering line-ups as original or not is redundant. They certainly don’t see it that way, so it’s a fan and/or journo oversight if you ask me. For instance we should all know by now that Paice replaced Clark, and how he maganaged to get the job auditioning on the guys kit while he was sent out for smokes by the others, or however that story really does go, which makes Paice really only their original recording drummer. I see this as a point worth making, because I don’t subscribe to these points about who’s who that way at all. So, this one really tends to grate.
Well!!! how much does it cost? Is there any possibility I can owned one in Malaysia, and will there be a “Machine Head 40th anniversary album, just like Jethro Tull did for “Aqualung”

March 20th, 2012 at 21:16I believe that Paice did some of his best drumming on that original, small kit. The ending to “Emmeretta” is an example of the snappy kind of frills and rolls as only Ian can do. He made that little set pop. This is an unqualified opinion as I am not a drummer; however, the Mark I albums are fraught with all kinds of great percussion. The snare was particularly snappy.
The Made in Japan era was another high point in his drumming.
Paice is arguably the most consistent member of Purple. I’ve not known him to have a bad night. He is also one of the few drummers to do proper drum solos. It is not about flying around doing crossovers and playing as fast as you can. Dynamics are important, too…and Paice is a master of the build-up and then diminuendo. His solos have shape. The Concerto is my particular favorite drum solo on record.
Back in the 70’s, my brother had those little cat-glasses too. They will forever be known as the “Ian Paice” glasses.

Nowdays Paice kit looks awesome too but it has a worst sound compared to the other one in my opinion…

March 23rd, 2012 at 01:13Bonham’s Ludwig kits seem to be good value for money, I didn’t realise they were available, not that I have ever thought to look for them of course! I am a little out of touch as to what is available these days, but it is great to see these drum kits available indeed, excellent!
March 23rd, 2012 at 11:01I think it’s great Ian is being honored with his own Signature Kit. But I still think his old silver Sparkle LUDWIGS where the best sounding kit he used and would like to see him behind them once more. And I’m not saying that just because I myself use LUDWIGS.

I agree Ian’s silver sparkle Ludwig kit ( honey maple interior most likely) was the best sounding kit he ever played in my opinion ; in particularly the depth of the tom sound contrasted with the high tuned snare on the made in japan album. I personally think that was his best solo for structure, snare accents, triplets, quadruples (if that’s a musical term); always heading somewhere. He does comment on the deep toms tuned very low on his DVD. One thing I’ve always wondered, how did he control the overtones in tuning toms of that size, 16 hanging tom, 18 & 20 floor toms.? I also love the intro to living wreck with the very high snare sound played on a 5 1/2 inch depth Ludwig snare I think. I know Ian changed to pearl around 1980 because Ludwig had lost their way by that time and probably never really fully recovered.
