Gillan: “The juices will be flowing pretty well”

Calgary Herald has published Ian Gillan’s profile/interview, which for once, is a little better researched than you average mainstream press fare.

On the news album he sounds rather enthusiastic:

“I think it’s time for some new material it always injects a spark and I think we need a little lift now. There’s a lot of energy going into this . . . and we’re still having a good time,” Gillan says, noting they held a jam session in Spain earlier this year with thoughts on writing new material for the long rumoured new record. “But nothing really happened and we weren’t really in the mood for it. So I think we’ll start from scratch and then see what happens. I imagine the juices will be flowing pretty well because we haven’t written anything for quite a while.”

Mind you, the article once again has only brief quotes from the interview and does not provide the context of what was said.

When asked about the recently popular in the interviews topic of RnR Hall of Fame, he replied:

I wouldn’t go to war over it and I wouldn’t hold out too hard on it but my position is this: One of the things I fought against as a kid, when I got into this line of work, as I rebelled from my post-Victorian background and childhood and upbringing… is to avoid being institutionalized. And that to me seems as near as an institution as you could possibly get. So, I’m not in favour of it, I’ve never looked for it, I don’t want it. If it happens, it happens and I’m staying well clear of it.

That makes it three for three.

If they haven’t written anything in a while, why have I heard 2 members in the band say as early as last summer that 90% of the tracks are finished with the exception of the lyrics?

it seems more a matter of principles…or ‘childhood’ as he said…

“and even an ill-fated turn as Sabbath frontman for 1983’s Spinal Tap-esque bad Born Again.”

Born Again is a great album, typical great lyrics and strong riffs. Its IMO a underrated record!

First Paicey, then Roger and now Big Ian…….all three remaining members from the “classic” era of Purple have now chimed in on the topic of the hall of fame – none want any part of it and to that I say Bravo.

To be recognized by the hall now would be so hollow and contrived……..too little too late I say. To accept any form of recognition from it now would be lending the Hall credibility that it no longer deserves. At this point teh Hall is simply another bloated corporate vehicle which has attached itself like a lamprey to the rock and roll beast, sucking it dry of any true meaning.

Dispense with the idea that Purple needs any form of validation from the Hall. True fans of good music which has not sold out should be rightly proud that Purple is not in the Hall. Wear that exclusion as a badge of honour!

First, the RRHoF means absolutely NOTHING! Just have a look at who they have inducted over the years! It’s just a bunch of BS!!!

Second, Gillan often say in interviws that “when Blackmore left, the sun came out again, and it’s been out ever since”. I totally understand what he’s saying. Even though we love the ’93 tour (I was there), it couldn’t continue because Blackmore didn’t want Gillan in the band again. Well, he left of his own free will thinking that would break up the band, but boy was he wrong!!! Personally, it took me some time (to say the least) to get used to the new band, but now I think they’re just as good as they were in their prime. Not saying they are playing better than in….well, ’72, but they are playing better than a lot of the bands they have to compete with, and to me Perfect Strangers and Purpendicular are two of the best records they’ve ever made. Let’s hope they will make another one! To have the band around in 2012 is just amazing! Gillan isn’t 21, but 66. Don’t expect him to sing like he used to way back when (no singer could…) , but the rest of the band are, IMO, as good as they ever were! Morse has done an amazing job, and Airey is for sure the right man to fill JLs shoes! They’re a different band today, but they’re not a “lesser band”. Just different….by their own choice! I love it!!!!!

Wrong, Blackmore couldn’t give a toss about something he leaves behind! The same when he departed back in 1975, he moves forward & why would anyone think that he thinks or hopes, that the band will not continue in some format without him?

The HOF issue doesn’t really matter anyway. Anyone who thinks Wenner and company are going to induct Purple are just kidding themselves.
