BCC 2 in UK charts
Black Country Communion 2 was released last week in the UK and is enjoying chart success. The Official Charts Company reports that for the week ending June 25 it has topped the Rock Charts and is at #23 in general Album Charts.

June 22nd, 2011 at 09:44This is an outstanding album. Their first was good, but this is even better. I think it’s one of the best hard rock records in years. Every song is good and the musicianship is remarkable.

But what disturmes me…..
So were his solo albums.
And stylistic , not all of them, they come very close to the BCC efforts.
Around the time The Way It Is was released Glenn was in absolute topform and not enough people cared to propel his career like now seems to happen with BCC.
I m afraid it has a lot to do with The Zeppelin afficionados that are blindfollowing Jason.
Bonamassa is cool too but Glenn had great guitarists before in HIS band.
Oh, well……
I m so happy Im saw him live in 94(twice), 96 and 98.

June 22nd, 2011 at 15:11Can’t pick up 1 on 2 or the opposite – BCC 1 & 2 completing one another. All I can say this is for the first time kind of Purple-Zeppelin fusion – and still something fresh and powerful – that’s really really great. Both 1 & 2 my favorites in last decade.

From the other side Joe is growing and growing in my eyes, even singing: his voice is remarkable.. Bonham just like father, really amazing, I have to admit. Little more organs on 2, but I’d prefer just little, little more…
Still BCC has all my support and they’ll be accepted by large zepp-purple fan base.
Rock is back. This is how it should sound. DP will never ever be this good, unless they recruit back Jon Lord, and replace Morse with Joe Bonamassa, sack Gillan and replace him with GH. But wait, what about Roger Glover then? Why not have two bassplayers, that would be cool!

Rock music played by top musicians like it´s supposed to, with a passion and tradition as opposed to the crap that´s around today….such as Foo Fighters, Rammstein, Slipknot, Ghost, Rob Zombie and Lady bloody GaGa……!!!!!
June 22nd, 2011 at 18:54I do see a lot of spiteful remarks here concerning Glenn, as someone mentioned. But I have never made any myself that had anything to do with him as an artist outside of the two and a half years he spent in Deep Purple, which was as far from my cup of Purple tea as it ever got. However since those days he grew on me, yet still the Purple stuff really hasn’t in any such way. The last 15 years have been especially good for him, and he can scream all he wants and it wouldn’t bother me, he’s simply brilliant, and now appearently more focused than ever. I hear a Purple idea or two on BCC 2, but I hear more Zeppelinesque ideas and even more than that I hear Glenn Hughes rehash, but that is a good thing because once you have a place to really expose yourself you do it, even if it takes repeating yourself at things you think deserve a lime light. Didn’t Gillan do that in Sabbath by hacking a great deal of his own previous work? I’m never put off by this unless they keep doing it over and over, then rehash is not a good thing. BCC 2 is some kind of monster, and as for Bonamassa, well I don’t think Glenn’s guitaists possess anywhere near the across the board skills he does. He has a hugely emotive voice full of soul and passion that goes beyond the guitar playing, so together he is a winning ticket in my book. Purple is Glenn’s crossroad for me, that is all, so I am thankful he was in there or I likely wouldn’t be writing this, but not allowing an artist to grow as much as he has, lends to the apparent narrow Purple scope.
June 22nd, 2011 at 20:29@9 -I wouldn’t expect Purple to try and make an album like this, they aren’t just starting out so they don’t have that same sort of hunger and drive to prove themselves. I know many of the opinion they will make a better album just because of who they are, regardless of contemporary or retro factors. But we all have to be honest and realize it’s not their race and they will not fork over a damned thing to buy there way into a successful charting record that way. This is NOT what makes an album good, but I do believe this is a good album without all the bells and whistles attached… sometimes you have to fake certain things to make it. This album will sell good because of it’s glowing publicity, but it’s backed by a quality product so it should. Or vice versa, however you see it.

The two Black Country Communion albums do indeed reflect the kind of music that Glenn has been doing for years. The sound, the song structure and the way keyboards are used in particular go back to Hughes’ solo work. The song “Soul Mover,” for example, would fit right on the new album as would several Hughes-Turner Project tunes, “Devils’ Road” and “Can’t Stop Rock and Roll” to name just a couple. You mentioned The Way It Is having similar traits. So do Songs in the Key of Rock and Building the Machine. The bloodline back to those albums is very strong, and you are correct that in JJ Marsh he already had a great guitarist in his ranks.
Unfortunately, it took a couple of well-known names to bring Hughes to the forefront of the public eye and generate the kind of interest BCC has. For many, it was, “Glenn WHO?” Now, many of those same people know it is Glenn HUGHES. One person on YouTube commented that he thought he knew who all the great vocalists were, then this guy comes along–not realizing Hughes has been around for decades. I hope that the Black Country Communion project will promote Glenn’s back catalogue and give him some of the credit he deserves.
I am a big fan of Black Country Communion and am pleased with what this group is doing to perpetuate the “classic rock” sound, particularly in the absence of anything new from Deep Purple. However, the two albums–particularly 2–is very much the Glenn Hughes sound. Blindfolded and without prior knowledge, one would assume that both BCC albums were just another couple of Glenn Hughes solo albums, albeit very strong ones. They are stylistically similar to things he has done before.
Those who like BCC and are just coming on board because of those albums might be interested in picking up a few of Glenn’s previous albums: Both HTP records, The Way It Is, Burning Japan Live, Songs in the Key of Rock, Building the Machine, Soul Mover, Fused with Tony Iommi, and in particular, the great Addiction–the latter of which could holds its own against the two BCC records.
It just goes to show what some PR can do. Bonham’s in particular probably brought in a lot of otherwise disinterested fans. I’m not sure what Bonamassa’s traditional fans think, but I do believe his name brought in some fans as well. The quick turn-around to a second recording kept fans interested, and constant contact through Twitter, Facebook and YouTube didn’t hurt, either.
But for Hughes, it’s business as usual.
June 23rd, 2011 at 04:08Cant agree with @6 more. If you compare some of the songs on Glenn’s solo albums The Way It Is, and Songs In The Key Of Rock, there is little difference! I suppose having Joe Bonamassa in the band helps as he is the flavour of the month with fans and critics alike. But as i said before, fully justified success at last for Glenn.

June 23rd, 2011 at 12:21I only agree vocally for the most part, otherwise Glenn’s solo work lacks the full band factor, whether it be the playing or the songwriting. Not to take anything away from those albums, but you have to agree this is full circle by comparison because of the others and their reasonable involvement in the songwriting, which to me has always been Glenn’s weakest link, but he delivered more than ever this time, so what if it’s territory he has already covered, he is who he is, like anyone else. His vocal melodies are being much repeated here, but as I mentioned, it’s a much better avenue for them, so why not? I mean if his mission succeeds than it will attract more exposure to his back catalog. I don’t know exactly how much truth there is to this or whether it really even matters, but in the first BCC PR campaign it states that Glenn is actually attached to over 100 million in record sales. This would have to include some of the things he has done that aren’t quite so well known but had to do with big selling records, such as Motley Crue’s ‘Holligans Holiday’ -where he originally sang every track on it and they left him in the background for who knows what reason, but you can hear him… and things like his work with the Climax Blues band, that people simply don’t consider… there are quite a few more I could name, he’s done all kinds of work. But generally across the board I can’t think of one of his solo albums that comes off anything like BCC 2 – sans the vocal factors. This isn’t just a good Glenn Hughes effort, it’s a real honestly great band with massive chemistry and x factors to boot. And his performing so far on the tour is fantastic, every single move he makes on stage is money! Pure rock star swagger, arms up in the air, leg crossing bows, all kinds of craziness going on there so far. He’s shaping up to be one of the ultimate contending rock frontmen, finally!

June 24th, 2011 at 09:56I’m pleased for Glenn that he is now getting some big time appreciation. I think in recent years, both solo and with BCC Glenn has produced some of the best and refreshing music of all the Purple guys.
As others have commented, his solo career has not been ignored by too many for too long. Hopefully that will change now. There is no doubt that he still has an incredibly powerful voice, while most from his generation have certainly lost some of their original flare.

What do people expect from any artists concerning not being recognisable in their art? They all indeed are, or they wouldn’t have any product to back it, similar to past work or not.
June 26th, 2011 at 20:12Provo una nostalgia immensa nell’ascoltare BCC 1 & 2, sopratutto sentendo Bonamassa alla chitarra, mi riporta ai tempi migliori dei DP Mark II & III con Blackmore veramente ispirato. Mi rammarica la scelta di Morse, bravo chitarrista, ma forse non adatto a sostituire Blackmore. Mi chiedo cosa sarebbe successo se i Purple avessero un chitarrista come Bonamassa.
