Sense of purpose
In this interview which he gave during the recent visit to St.Petersburg, Ian Gillan opines on many topics but music. Immigration and overpopulation, democracy, capitalism and communism, money and greed — answers are scarce, but questions are aplenty.
Thanks to Nevex TV and Tatiana Marshanova for the info.
Good one! I value those non-music interviews much more than those where he discusses music. Well, back to work.
March 28th, 2011 at 20:39Good morning Gillan! or maybe good night!
March 28th, 2011 at 20:58Nice interview. I agree with marcinn that it adds more than the normal music interviews.
March 29th, 2011 at 08:59It was better for him to stick to the music, and not talk “smart things”…
March 29th, 2011 at 12:07Nice interview.
March 29th, 2011 at 14:10Bad news from Gillan… on another interview with Russian AutoRadio he said he would retire NEXT YEAR! 🙁
I still think he’s joking
March 29th, 2011 at 14:50I saw Deep Purple live two times: first in Istanbul 2009 and then in Yerevan 2010. Sincerely, the Yerevan show was 100 times better, the band seemed more relaxed and Gillan was in in GREAT shape. I don’t think it’s time to stop. DO NOT STOP! While you can make millions of people happy, then it’s NOT time to stop.
March 29th, 2011 at 14:53Yes, good interview and he has got some good points, too.
March 29th, 2011 at 14:55Democracy is when you have a dream and the dream could come true one day.. without anyone else interfering with it all. When you are allowed to have dreams at all.IMHO.
March 29th, 2011 at 15:00A True Democracy is the next step towards the end of strong civilization. 300 years is the normal longest a Democracy has lasted. Rome anyone??? IMHO. That is why the US is seeing it’s better days behind. We are supposed to be a Republic. But in today’s actions and political direction, we consider ourselves as a Democracy. The next step will be Anarchy…..Rome anyone???
Cheers
March 30th, 2011 at 00:20Democracy is basically the rule of law by the majority.
Can be good but too often…..
When “Democracy” (A good willing majority often sees more clever people go with the big prize) goes together with too much social economic inequity its the main problem.
I m not pleading everyone should earn the same but there should be a limit to enriching yourself.
In a GOOD democracy weaker minorities are protected, everyone gets the same chances to study, live in healthy houses and so on.
Thats not how America was and is.
US is not getting behind because of too much democracy.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:18Its just a historical dynamic that sees power shift from one place on the globe to another through the ages.
Enjoyable interview – I think Ian has quite an intellect. Did the interviewer roust him from bed? Seems they could have given him enough time to run a comb thru his hair first (SMILE)
March 30th, 2011 at 13:13Why should people restrain themselves to any of old ideologies – they’ve proved not to be what sustainable community should be. Ian has one good point: greed is what currently stopping human race from progress as whole, and that’s it – the rest I wouldn’t like to comment, he’s musician…
March 30th, 2011 at 13:24His point is laregly that many don’t even know what ‘democracy’ really means, sadly. Where’s my comb? And what is it with these questions? Oops, answers… why care what the rock singer thinks about this stuff beyond mention of it in ONE song from an album that is six years old, and why keep asking him in Russia, don’t they have history and political science and religous books there? I think he made one public remark years ago about about metaphyisics being what ‘Before Time Began’ is loosely about… and they think he’s a philospher now and want his advice on the human race and the planet it has devoured. It must be awkward but I’m sure he knows he drives such questions or he’d be less respectfull about answering.
March 30th, 2011 at 20:14Why they keep asking questions like that?
Dont think it has to do only with the ” Before Time Began” moment.
For many years he had things like that, during the Gillan days,FOOLS, and so on.
Where did his novel WESSEX, or something like that, go?
Was it published?
What I once read many years ago that he tried to study Politics around 1974/1975, dont know still if that was the case.
I m not confusing political science with philosophy, NOT me hey.
Philosophy is a study at University, not a course at summerschool.
It often bewilders me too, calling people who reflect and talk thoughts through philosophers.
I m afraid it says more about those who think that.
March 31st, 2011 at 08:27Can this site be kept as a muzak forum, not political? I myself could go on and on with opinion whilst sitting here in the greatest nation of America even though there is a radical socialist down in DC…. :>
In my best Homer Simpson, DOH!!
Peace,
Ted

Man, the comb comment was an attempt at light-hearted humor (humour) and was not meant to be taken seriously. Perhaps I should stop attempting to be a comedian and crawl back in my cave. However, I do agree with you 100% concerning democracy! I fail to understand the negativity in some of these comments. I am interested in what Ian has to say on non-musical topics. Enquiring minds, you know!
March 31st, 2011 at 15:55Great interview. It looked as though this took place after a show.. Long live the Morse Era!!
March 31st, 2011 at 22:35So what do you want him to speak about? Discuss Machine Head again? There are numerous topics to discuss and have an opinion on.
Ian seemed to be quite interested while answering my questions. I don’t believe he’s a person who’d make a lively conversation on a boring topic – you would notice that at once. And surely we didn’t roust him from bed, there were a couple of journalists before us so that he could warm up 🙂
March 31st, 2011 at 22:47We cant blame he s looking old, he IS old.
I m not sure if , like someone suggested, it would help if grew his his hair again and dye it again.
Looking right out of his bed?
Maybe he could freshen up a bit, thats taste as well.
Where are the Japanese massages when you need them?! : )
Personally I like to hear him speak about these kinda things, no complaints here about that.
But it makes me think about what he says as well.
For instance…..
If he thinks Capitalism leading into too much inequity between incomes richer and poor is so bad why does he stress money so much in his own life?
DP tickets are, unlike what some like to defend, not very cheap.
April 1st, 2011 at 09:44Man, I am so sorry that I made the comment concerning rousting him from bed. Honest folks – it was humor!
April 1st, 2011 at 15:12I do see a pattern following ‘Before Time Began’ with these questions which are what the song is about… metaphysics, etc… some politics thrown in, its just all stuff he has a better place for in a songwriting environment. His views otherwise aren’t much different then anyone I can think of, its all in the books he reads, his only recalling education about it. This is at least the third time he has been filmed answering such questions. Other than that I was after the interviewer in the first place, not Ian. They have to ask first, you know…

I was joking too, man!
April 2nd, 2011 at 21:33I needed that. Thank you so much Taisia!!
April 3rd, 2011 at 15:02Funny how the actual original “Jesus Christ Superstar” whom, woulda, shoulda, coulda….now seems to poke fun, or question regarding the True Creator of whom we all should give Thanks. All planets and worlds including the Purple World. Rock Gods??? There is truly only ONE. He Truly Rocks! Just look at each coast. All have been Truly Rocked lately. It doesn’t get Heavier than what has happened lately. Heavy Metal???? Hard Rock??? HA HA!!!!! It all crumbles.
Cheers
April 4th, 2011 at 03:49Too many people? Anyone look at a true picture of the Globe lately? See the actual percentage of inhabited land against uninhabited land? It isn’t that there are Too many People. It’s that there are Too many Useless people. If each takes care of their own, it all works. It’s that there are Too many whom want Others to take care of themselves. In that case, we are doomed. We were doomed ‘Even before Time Began’. Humans basically SUCK.
I will go down Feeding myself and my family, defending myself and my family, taking care of myself and my family. Regardless of What a Government says is OK. I refuse to fall into the mercy of those whom thrive on those whom willfully settle for what Govt. gives in reward for honoring their code. The Govt. Code. JUST ENOUGH. Not enough for ME.
Cheers
April 4th, 2011 at 04:22Well, its clear where you come from, I think.
