Coverdale has lost most of his marvelous voice. But this girl in the video 🙂 huh..
    Riff is catchy though.

David Coverdale’s voice seems to hold up pretty well here, but that’s about the most positive I can be about the song. Otherwise, this is generic pap: Lyrically challenged (a criticism I have always made of Whitesnake) + bog standard riff, tempo & tone + utterly unoriginal / uninspired soloing = BORING!

Compared to the quality of other post-Purple output since mid-70s (particularly Blackmore, Gillan and Hughes), I have been continually disappointed by Coverdale. His first 2 solo albums (Whitesnake & Northwinds) showed great promise but IMHO his work fell away sharply after that and he has really only had the odd good song since.

    Whitesnake?
No this is not Whitesnake, but a bad Whitesnake tribute band. Whitesnake was with soul/blues/rock and a GREAT singer. This singer screams and cant sing as the “real” Coverdale could. I will put a real Whitesnake CD on and enjoy big time.

    Armando says:

Gillan free botox. Gillan rules, Coverdale too, but this is song like Bon Jovy, not Deep, not Whitesnake. For my opinion.

Ironically, it is the hair-metal style Whitesnake music being played, but it is the classic version of the logo that went on the t-shirt!

Whitesnake has had this dual identity since the band’s re-invention in the middle Eighties. Now that the name has been reactivated, a decision had be made as to which direction to go. It is the hair band style Whitesnake that has the name recognition, so that is the way Coverdale leans.

Although I prefer the blues-rock era style of the band, this particular song is good for what it is. It has a nice hook, is easy to follow, is very radio-friendly and carries on with the traits that made Whitesnake such a sensation back in the day. The ’87 qualities come through–without all the echo.

Most of the attendees here might look more favorably to something along the lines of “Walkin’ in the Shadow of the Blues”–but that is neither the target audience nor is it the most recognizable identity of the band. “Love Will Set You Free” is simple and smooth–what a single ought to be. Whitesnake has had a long and successful history with this style of music and they are very good at it.

    I liked it.

My favorite post-80’s Coverdale opus was Into the Light, which, interestingly, was close to the classic era in style but did not carry the Whitesnake name. On the other hand, in this age of baggy pants and spittin’ & spoofin’ shananigans, some new Whitesnake is a shot in the arm–pop elements be damned.

    I’ll take it–clichés and all.

And dang…did you notice the beautiful, oozing curvaceous and lucious gold top Les Paul?

    Bitchin’.

A pop song with an almost a minute of good guitar work? (starting at 2:00) well that’s what you can expect from whitesnake this days and i’ts good!

    I Liked the song inmediately

    Cheers!

i saw Whitesnake in 2009 with this two guitars and they were amazing, good choice Coverdale!

Don’t you carp at them a bit? I miss Vandenberg here, but this clip isn’t bad.

    dave_wallis says:

Such a shame David went after that hairy-80s sentiment rather than stick to his blues roots.

  20. 20
    Bill The Wizard Pierce says:

Your all nuts, this song Rocks and the video is a logical step, since MTV no longer plays Rock. Good Work DC, again you guys with the Blues Rock from the olden days, move on will ya the paint peeled on that wall a long time ago. When Marsden and Moody got to wrapped up in doing dolo material and guest appearances on other peoples work and didn’t focus on WS, that’s when it all fell apart. Then the modern Whitesnake started to appear. this is 2011 not 1979 Lovehunter material

  21. 21
    stefan says:

Good but he can do better ! Songs like this DC can write in his sleep, a throwaway…filler !!! For us long time fans who´s been there since day one, I think we´re entitled to demand better songs ! What I´d like to see and hear anytime soon is a DC solo blues album, with some interesting guest artists like….Jon Lord and his rich Hammond B-3 and why not Jimmy Page, Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Hughes and maybe a soaring duet with Beth Hart…??? Why not….no harm in dreaming is there ??? Having said that…of course I´m going see Whitesnake live on the upcoming tour….as usual !!! ROCK ON !!!

  22. 22
    james jay says:

@14 agreed. this version is too 80’s hair band. I like the bluesy style with Moody and co.

    Oleg says:

No keys? Hope to hear some purple / old snake hamond on new cd.
Nice song David still rocks & looks like real rock star.
Hope to see Whitesnake in Israel again!!

    Tomek says:

I agree with the views that claim that it is average at best. Repetitive and uninspiring. It is considered hairy metal but still without any real quality. Any song on 1987 album is classic in comparision to this. It continues the low level that started on good to be bad.

  28. 28
    dave_wallis says:

Some people here mentioned that David should move on as an explanation for this medicore pop-rock song he’s serving us. I say, he only moves on in terms of the heaviness of the guitar sound. As for songwriting this is a huge step back. He used to be so imaginative. What ever happened, David? Whenever I have to regain my faith in David I play the original 1982 version of “Crying in the Rain”. What a song this is. They don’t write like this anymore, even David can’t do it anymore.

    Sami says:

Well, I’m not buying this album, glad I didn’t buy GTTB either, nothing special here whatsoever, Black Country Communion’s where’s it at, yep!!

yes armando and yes roberto 100 % agree…
just crap for mtv and others usa radios.
where is the time ” love in the heart of the city” ?
    long live DP.
    CHEERS.
    Richard.

    Germain says:

Where are the good old times with Pacey , Jon , Mickey Moody , Bernie Marsden.. ??
And , to be honest , big Ian looks like a young man compared to David. My first thought when i saw David appearing on the video was; what the hell is Alice Cooper doing in a Whitesnake video ( haha , i am kidding)

  32. 32
    james jay says:

@31 agreed– DC needs a short crop like IG. Long hair on an old face looks bad.

  33. 33
    crabby says:

Love can not get rid of the wrinkles in Davids face. I could count them everytime there was a close-up.

Song is good. Typical. Nothing new or exciting.

We should all strike against the current DP lineup… demand the return of the David C. days. Forget whitesnake

Favorite WS album – Ready ‘An Willing.

    T says:

The physical appearance of the artists in the Deep Purple family are of little importance when one considers that their profession is sonic in nature. The release of a new song has very little to do with the way the band looks. The members of the Deep Purple family have paid their dues and have nothing to prove. That these musicians are aging is an inevitable act of nature. The alternative would be to pack on spackle and do some sanding to hide the experience and character in their face.

Better that these great musicians retain their position in the rock world with dignity. Jon Lord chose to tie his hair back and leave it grey. Likewise, Coverdale need only to allow himself to age naturally and produce a quality product–physical appearance be damned. That these musicians are still around, recording, and performaning is a feat beyond the imagination of any young buck currently on the circuit. Most will disappear and few, if any, will be remembered 40 years from now.

These guys are in an impossible position. If they do nothing, they get hammered by fans for being “old”. If they try to fight nature, they get hammered for hair pieces, botox, face lifts or hair transplants. Fans have argued this both ways.

We are getting a Whitesnake album in 2011–and the second in just a couple of years. That’s enough for me. The way the musicians look is of little importance. Perhaps James Jay is right and Coverdale needs to go the Glenn Hughes route with the buzzed hair, but rest assured that if he did, he would be criticized for doing so as much as trying to maintain the look of yesteryear.

To heck with grey hair, wrinkles, and receding hairlines. Grab a mike or strap on a guitar and kick out the jams–that’s the bottom line.

  38. 38
    XCAnderson says:

There is no fool like an old fool. Coverdale’s problem is that he just can’t age gracefully. This is truly a pathetic attempt by a man approaching 60! to recapture his long gone youth. The video is itself an embarrassment.

It is sad because there was a glimmer of hope in the mid-late 1990s with albums like ‘Restless Heart’ and ‘Into the Light’. Instead, Coverdale is now surrounding himself with a bunch of young session musicians.

The song itself, stripped bare, is OK, though covers no new ground, but it is ruined by the over the top guitar, which is a failed and somewhat ridiculous attempt at recreating ‘1987’ in 2011.

Didn’t bother with the last album, though heard extracts, and won’t be bothering with this either.

Time for DC to go back to basics.

    james jay says:

As a person who jogs daily and has been for (35+ yrs)–I do have to admit Roger G. looks pretty damn fit for a geezer. The times I have had the honor of attending a DP show–he seems to have the energy of a young gun. ” T ” is correct as far as music vs. appearence. Just glad for once no one bashed JLT looks for the 100th time…….yet.

    John S says:

Great tune, but what’s Alice Cooper doing in a Whitesnake video?

  42. 42
    Jeff Summers says:

This song structure is really a classic funk pattern, nice chord progressions, classic funk melody, but all wrapped up in an 80’s hard rock approach :o) Very good!!

  43. 43
    AndreA says:

2 guitars for a bad sound,…how do you all find so interesting to listen these guitars? it seems they would replay the sound of “1987”…but in that time we has another guitarist (JS) not these 2…..this work does not attract me…
    sorry

  44. 44
    AndreA says:

If now I would listen a new real good hard rock realise performed by a band from 70ies I’d buy the last Uriah Heep “Into The Wild”. Real good melodies instead of a boring sound from “forevermore”…There is more freshness and melodies..

  45. 45
    Rascal says:

DC will always be one of the great voices, but just like many he has lost that edge, be it age, or life style……….it hardly matters – he just cant do what he used to.

maybe I should just give ‘Northwinds’ a spin!

  46. 46
    Sami says:

@ 44 Right, AndreA. The new Heep album is on my shopping

    list, Wake The

    Sleeper was excellent!

  47. 47
    purplepriest1965 says:

I missed the news that Heep had another album since Wake The Sleeper.

WTS sounds very fresh to me.

I ll always prefer the Byron/Hensley era but, despite the major line up changes, they deserve respect.

Good singing, espescially the harmonies, variety in setlists, great.
But they ALSO dont record much, except for live AND new studio renditions of old classics.

IMO after Kens departure they never reached their creative peaks again.

    Disappointed with this release.
