Into his own secret life
Ah, the power of observation:
Stresa, Italy, 21st July 2010
The occasion; lunch in a secluded restaurant under a roof of vine leaves, slivers of sunlight dappling bright patches on the dozen or so customers – a random cast of characters, tourists, locals, mostly couples. It is a family-run business, waiters quick and efficient, sure-footedly dispensing breadbaskets and menus with practiced hands and seasoned smiles.
Diners and their secret lives; young and old, thick and thin, bellies, shorts, summer dresses, muffled conversations, occasional laughter…
Read observations of a rock musician in an Italian restaurant at in the third installment of Roger’s Road Life.
Great text. Roger is quite a writer.
September 15th, 2010 at 20:34Marcinn, my thoughts exactly. Roger needs to write his own book on the exploits of Deep Purple. In my view, the more points of view, the better.
September 16th, 2010 at 03:16Be careful what you wish, although he isn’t keen on telling too much of other peoples business or tooting his own horn, it only adds to the approach. As far as I know it’s not an impossibility. You guys write pretty well yourselves ya know… I smell a research department to consult with.
September 16th, 2010 at 09:25Very well written.Indeed,RG’s view of DP would make a good read.
September 16th, 2010 at 10:08I’d also be curious to read a Paice/Purple bio, since Ian has been on the drums since Day One
Ah yes, RG
September 16th, 2010 at 11:26keeping it real, like a fine bass-man should…..
Nice read.
I recognise Rogers idea that his way of observing and thinking about people he sees around him is influenced a lot by the book he s reading.
Another thought which struck me again and again….
How often one has ideas about people we do not really know?
Like this….
About that older couple….
How does he know the love has been lost and replaced by a habit?
The original sentence could have been used as a metaphor for nowadays Deep Purple?
September 16th, 2010 at 12:58Didn’t he set the scene well, you were almost at the next table. One day we will probably get all of Rogers observations of life during, before and after his Purple days…Now that’s a book I would have to read!
September 16th, 2010 at 14:46That’s very nice… but what about the new DP album, or at least his solo CD. Glover is a very talented chap and it’s a pity he hasn’t done anything new since ROTD. Gillan, Airey and Morse have recorded new solo albums, it seems to me Roger isn’t really interested in music anymore.
September 16th, 2010 at 17:18It will certainly be an interesting read
September 16th, 2010 at 19:51Btw, I d like to know more about his newborn child.
What does that do with him/his feelings/attitudes towards life?
Must be a big experience and I d understand THAT as a factor which influences his other activities.
On the other hand, it could have inspired him to do a lovely artwork cover for a solo album like BN uses for Autumn Sky!!!
No one better than Roger, think about all his art works in the past, the Butterfly Ball, etc.
Why not a Butterfly Ball Part 2?
Replace that old terrible and traumatic for US ALL video shoot!
Embrace the BB concept again and make lots of fortune, both financially and emotionally out of a NEW grand opus for children, and ahem……us.
Ritchie and Candice share a lot of pics on the Net.
How about it Rog?
By now its very plausible that Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi will do a new effort together instead of new Sabbath or DP stuff.
Jon Lords solo works are so wonderful.
Ritchie and Candice are happy campers.
Maybe Ian Paice can join a more adventurous outfit, more fitting to his possibilities?
I wont complain.
September 16th, 2010 at 20:59There are so many things on my wishlist for the next 12 months, I ll have to rob a bank.
That’s Roger….
The many times I have had the pleasure of speaking with him in the ‘Green Rooms’ throughout the US over the years, he is a staple of keeping it humble and real. No drama and No complaints. Just does what he has been given the ability to do and does so with pure grandeur and respect to what it is really about. Right Place Right Time. He is the First to admit it……and is thankful for all that has followed.
Hope to see you soon here in the US on the heals of the next Purple Album…
CHEERS
September 16th, 2010 at 22:14A healthy interest in the world around us – especially focussed on people, is one of life’s greatest counter measures against Depression with the added bonus of inspiring creative tales, often told through song (eg Ted The Maniach) – lets hope Rog gets fired up resulting in a tune or two accompanied by Observational lyrics for i.g. to distort into something Cunning.
It’s a dream that won’t go away!
My Doormat is waiting for the arrival of a crisp sparkling new DP CD – Maybe we should all refuse to trim our nasal hairs until the day comes (It’s the only hair some of us can guarantee to have by the time the next album is recorded).
Not to be sneezed at [Thought I’d say it before someone else did!]
September 16th, 2010 at 22:48Priest, there are a lot of people, famous or not, that are not comfortable about putting pics of their babies out in the world. Please respect the man’s privacy.
September 17th, 2010 at 06:45That’s right. It’s his private thing. What we want is ANY new music. Sorry, Rog, but you have done nothin’ for so many years.
September 17th, 2010 at 08:40Maybe I forgot that for a moment Svante.
Or did it put uncarefully.
Its something like saying LETS STALK ROD EVANS!!!! a short time ago.
Ofcourse I m not gonna stalk anyone!
Its just a figure of speach.
But I felt intrigued since I heard of his new child and never hearing about it again.
Still, I feel the same about my other suggestions?
Hoping for expression in words is appearantly considered too private, which is his right ofcourse.
Hoping for a beautiful expression into music or drawings is just being a enthusiastic fan, IMHO.
Ooops, did I say FAN…..?????!!!!!
Why not a revamp of the the wonderful Butterfly Ball?
Make it a double or triple CD/DVD with new artwork by both Roger Glover AND Alan Aldridge!
Like he once said it HAS the potential to appeal to new generations, again and again.
As long they dont screw things up as with that horrible videoshoot.
I still want to kill, well sort of, the responsible ones who destroyed that possibly otherwise great film for the DP DVD library.
Last time I heard of Alan was in that one single wonder doc made in Holland, years ago.
Is he still in buisness?
On wiki it says he did something for a band called Incubus in 2006.
Ofcourse I can imagine lots and everything too but I am NOT the artist with the talent here.
I always loved projects like BB Ball , Cherkazoo, several solo outings with different musical style.
Its so damn refreshing!!!
And I dare to say more honest and true to themselves than touring for years with old material, putting out UNexiting albums, and so on.
Although I still have not come to grips with Ians One Eye To Morocco, I hope so I will one day.
In the floods of material the DP family put out since the beginning there s always something to like.
I could not enjoy MASK but Elements and Snapshot I really like.
It must be I m a spoiled man that thinks they have more to offer than what they have done in recent years.
Listening to the Black Country Album now.
I have not made up my mind yet completely what to think of it.
Uptill now I think it s going to be a important part of his better works since 1993.
Ofcourse the spoiled man in me could complain about different things.
I noticed several references, or is called differently?,to lyrics he used before.
Examples are the FREAK FLAG FLYING and MOJO.
I think I heard some more.
I know people who think this a very unoriginal thing to do.
They would have said that so around 1980 already!!!!
I can understand what certain people mean with saying THINGS HAVE TO EVOLVE and so on.
But often it bores me to death.
A good album is a good album.
Whats so wrong about liking several things you already liked 30 years ago?!
Even worse is the suggestion of so many evolving musiclovers that one excludes the other!!!!
I am very open to new stuff/styles/things at my own moments.
Thank you!
I ve been expanding my taste since I was 12, partly due to the many influences DP and family offered.
Lots of stuff which has been released since I find awful but to conclude I m not able to taste the new things is annoying and stupid.
It looks like BCC is gonna get some more spins the coming weekend.
Thank you guys!!!!
Cant wait for the 2nd!!!

Did you mean family or Family?
It was just an observation from a hill!
September 17th, 2010 at 23:53Btw, I did NOT mean to say I have a problem with reciting old lyrical parts.
It can be amusing.
September 18th, 2010 at 14:47Hi Mister Ed
Regards from that other fool on another hill.
I m just a bird on a wire! And you re driving me insaaaaaaaaaaaaaneeeeeeeeeeeee…………

September 20th, 2010 at 13:512 words…
I’ve read and interview with RG on italian magazine (I don’t find now its website) where he says that DP surely would come in studio for realising a new studio-production,but all this will be possible only when they are able to find and to write real good pieces to play because nowdays (he tell) to realize a new record is very expensive. when they will be sure about to record they will be ready.
the second is

“Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi Head Back Into The Studio For Charity”
ciao
September 29th, 2010 at 10:20Maybe they should go in the studio for US!!!!!
Hopefully Iommi gets to kick Ian in the ass, back into ROCKGEAR.
Grow your hair, Ian, take your rest, stay of the tobacco and alcohol, show us that you still kick ass.
Roger or Glenn on bass, whatever.
They already kinda tried that that with retaking BS material on Gillans Inn Cd.
That album at least ROCKED.
We need music we can cherish like in the old days, not boring stuff with someone who does not know how to rock and to compose.
Iommi always writes great material, listen to the Tony Martin era and you ll know it.
Fused and The Devil You Know were a bit too dark for me, but thats still better than things like ROTD and OETM.
By know…..we should know what that last album sold.
Larry wrote areview when it came out and after one year theres almost nothing in replies.
The irony, Glenn Hughes showing Ian Gillan how to rock!!!
