Rainbow vinyl bonanza
On July 12 Universal’s specialty label Rock Classics/Back on Black is reissuing eight classic Rainbow albums on vinyl. This includes studio output from RB’s Rainbow to Straight Between The Eyes, plus On Stage and Finyl Vinyl. All records will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl and packaged in “deluxe gatefold sleeves”. The first 1,000 copies of each title will come in limited edition coloured vinyl. Release date is set for July 12 in UK.
There’s no word if it will be released in other territories, but all indications at the moment point to the albums being available only as an import. To avoid outrageous charges from a local retailer and take advantage of the low pound, you might want to order directly from the UK-based Plastic Head. And once you’re there, be sure to check out their merchandising section for Purple and the late great Ronnie James Dio. Beware of the out-of-stock items.
Thanks to Blabbermouth.net for the info.
Is it fair to assume at this point that there are no plans to give Rainbow albums the whole remix / remaster / bonus tracks treatment? Whilst I am a vinyl lover from way back, I’d be more interested in that sort of approach to this classic material – particularly if there are any studio outtakes to be found. Or have I missed something?
Also, I think that some of the mixing (especially the 1st album) was pretty ordinary. It’s funny how Blackmore spends a lot of time buried in the mix, which is a great pity as he really was at the peak of his powers during the ’74-’78 period. Most of his studio output does not do him justice.

I support anything that promotes the faith, but… I already HAVE all the Rainbow albums on vinyl–and they’re mint. Back in the day I used to put my LPs on tape as working copies; therefore, most of my LPs hardly have been played (ditto the DPs).
This is a great advert. Thanks for making it available. It will look great in the guitar bunker!
June 11th, 2010 at 06:03Of the 8 albums in the picture above, I’ll take the 4 in the top row.

June 11th, 2010 at 15:39Nice poster…. Wouldn’t mind having that on the wall. They can keep their vinyl though. My original copies are still as good as new. Why would I buy them again? It would though be interesting to see how they’ve extended the DtE, DtC and SBtE sleeves to deluxe gatefolds. I suspect they’ve probably used the original inner sleeve designs for the inside spreads and reverted to paper inner bags. It would be nice for someone to prove this old cynic wrong though….
Now digital remasters from the multi-trax with out-takes and extended versions would be another story altogether.
June 11th, 2010 at 19:14In case anyone missed it, the Craig Gruber/Bob Daisley interview is a must-hear for any Rainbow fan.

June 11th, 2010 at 20:31# 6,i’m so sad with rock in these days that i would get in a shop just to have the pleasure of buying the vinyls again.
June 12th, 2010 at 02:41@1 I agree with you, mate. We need remastering treatment for all Rainbow opus, as well what remained of DP..
June 13th, 2010 at 10:54See your point T but I m still interested.
Would have been much more interesting though if they had turned out De Luxe Editions Double Vinyls, including extra artwork and bonustracks.
Making budget choices always kills me.
Right now I m probably gonna buy me aticket to see Big Man dave Meniketti and the mighty Y and T in Dordrecht, close to home.
THEY still know how to rock and give me good feeling after a show.
They play their chops off, deliver passionate vocals with ease, give Gary Moore and others a run for their money and most important…….
THEY MADE A NEW KILLER ALBUM.
It rocks and I m already playing it to death.
No new stupid things like evolving and trying to suggest you are on a spectacular artistic roll while only delivering weak instead of STAND OUT MUSIC.
Y and T.
Fooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvveeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 13th, 2010 at 13:04Lucky for me, I was a vinyl collector when ALL of these were originally released. I obtained US, European, Japanese and other copies of them all. Don’t need a REISSUE. They might have sold me if they contained Bonus Material, but SOS ain’t gonna do it.
Cheers
June 19th, 2010 at 20:31Will sound interesting to hear some albums with the vinyl sound , the cd`s have to much shine to them .
June 20th, 2010 at 12:29But it would have been far better to have released some unheard concert recording’s . I’m still waiting for the Monsters Of Rock from 1980 Cozy’s & Grahams last concert. It was properley recorded to as 2 songs were released on a record with other acts . I really liked that Deep Purple box set that was released 10 year’s ago, that contained bootleg recordings something like that would be good to hear.
@ 12
My idea George.
The shelves must be weighing down to the ground with great recordings never released.
What about the complete Cardiff 83 show?
A good Black Sabbath show from 92.
And so on…..
June 20th, 2010 at 22:39These albums are in dire need of updating via a thorough remix anyway. I would rather they clean up the sound, throw on a bonus track or two, and include a booklet with pics and behind-the-scenes coverage. Release them all on CD before the format dies and everything becomes mp3 downloads.
If you think the LP is a dinosaur, the CD is about to go the way of the dodo bird.
June 20th, 2010 at 23:02I’ll be picking up those vinyl copies as mine are 2nd hand copies. FridayMusic’s releases of DP’s Fireball and Who Do We Think We Are are fantastic! Hopefully, Universal will do these Rainbow albums justice. When they do take their time nothing beats vinyl!!!
June 22nd, 2010 at 01:44Just listened to my vinyl record of Rainbow Best Of released in the 90’s , & it’s quite impressive. Ritchie’s guitar comes alive & you can feel all the emotion’s of the song’s more, they have more meaning.
You just can’t feel those same feelings on the cd version’s. Plus the songs from Long Live Rock & Roll sounded much stronger, than the first cd version, the mixed sound is poor on that.
Would say the vinyl sound is much more natural and better than the cd. I’m sure there are lot’s of Rainbow cuts that didn’t make it to the albums , all they have to do is release them onto one cd.
June 29th, 2010 at 04:10Record’s are great because of the artwork.
With the Rainbow`s Straight Between The Eyes LP , you get this big photo of the band on a sheet inside, but on the cd you get nothing!
Just bought a copy of Deep Purple Perfect Stranger`s on record , because i love the way it all looks on the record. You have the photos on the back that look really impressive & they look so much better bigger. If only they would make a T shirt one day with that on.
On the inside sleeve you have more photo’s that look so good a bit bigger. Some would look great blown up as a poster. You also get some shot’s that weren’t included on the cd.
Also loved the big singles on 33 that they used to make, i have one with a big photo of the band on the front. It has Perfect Stranger’s & Son of Alerik on it, think it would look really good in a framed photo on the wall.
July 5th, 2010 at 12:10I’m waiting for a remix of the Rainbow debut album. No deluxe edition appeared, and I read elsewhere that the tapes were AWOL. As Derek and Clive once said “you’ve got to take the time to label things properly”.
September 26th, 2024 at 19:09The Rainbow debut is indeed in dire need of a remix and a remaster. I don’t know what Martin Birch did with it, but it wasn’t good. There he goes into the studio and records Stormbringer, no matter what you think of the music one of the best-SOUNDING DP 70s albums along with CTTB, and then immediately follows it in the same studio with the same musical director (= Ritchie) with the recording of the Rainbow debut and that things sounds then muffled, flat and without dynamics. Strange.
