Lost classic film
In 1972 whilst in Japan for the ‘Made In Japan’ concert series , Purple also spent time at the local TV station NHK in Tokyo filming a 2 hour spot for the “Young Music Show”. Unfortunately it appears that the tapes have been lost, but we are being promised that the search will continue.
Thanks to Masa Tanaka.
This film would be of tremendous historical value should it be located. The Made in Japan era was MkII Deep Purple at their musical height and just before Gillan’s disillusionment. While the current incarnation of the band is the most heavily documented, artifacts from the classic era are relatively rare–especially anything new.
May 26th, 2010 at 03:48What exactly were they doing at this show?
Doing interviews or songs?
May 26th, 2010 at 09:38Strange that the Japs would lose anything. They’re so slavishly methodical. Still let’s hope they turn up. It doesn’t say anything about performances but it’d still be interesting – especially if Blackers participated for once in his life!
May 26th, 2010 at 09:57Jesus!!!Never heard about it.Let’s crooss the fingers.
May 26th, 2010 at 11:27More classic footage lost in the annals of time? What a shame…the Japanese are usually so efficient at keeping this stuff:(
May 26th, 2010 at 14:25Speaking of made in Japan and film: what is going to happen with the rest of the footage of the Made in Japan concert(s). Just a small part was included on the DVD but there is more….

May 26th, 2010 at 14:45Anything “new” from the golden age of REAL Deep Purple power will ALWAYS be a fantastic.
May 26th, 2010 at 23:06They are still a great band and FAR better than the rest out there, but for all who saw them at that time (and at the Burn tour) it will never be the same. That energy and power was in a class far above any other.
If you dont know what I’m talking about the play Made In Japan – LOUD!. Then you know!
Oh, that tape just has to be found…

So very true!
Also, imho, it is so difficult to believe that there is no more material of the other DP line up’s over all those years, filmed or recorded or found!
It would be of most precious value and importance for the appreciation of Deep Purple and all fans ,over all their years!
I support for an intensive search to find THE ‘holy’ material and ‘lost’ footage! 😉
May 27th, 2010 at 07:27Lost Classic film????? from 1972??? Hasn’t been seen nor heard of for 38 years???? What kind of News is that? I’m sure there are Tons of Lost Classics that have never been seen nor heard from All the Mks. This may be the most useless topic ever to grace the News section of THS. What’s next……”There Might be something, somewhere that we don’t know about that might surface regarding Deep Purple in the Future”.
How’s that for a News Item…
Cheers
May 27th, 2010 at 15:54But this is hardly a news story is it? Lost classic film remains, er, lost.
May 27th, 2010 at 18:59i also am confused about this…??! someone claims they were on a tv show and it was filmed but no one knows what was on it? how did the subject even come up? would love to hear more along the lines ” new vintage footage found”. why bother bringing it up? there are at least stills of the wiped “dobiedoe” tv show!
May 28th, 2010 at 00:42@ 11
Yep, lost MAGIC.
May 28th, 2010 at 10:43Number 1: what the hell happened with the rest of the tokyo 1972 footage not used on the third dvd? I want a classic albums _made in japan dvd. eagle records must even own the rights for teh footage, since they released teh short clip.
May 28th, 2010 at 20:16Number 2: what the hell was all that talk about new discovered footage of Child in time, stormbringer, might just take your life and woman from tokyo from the 70´s that was announced on glenn´s web site and supesedly available shortly at dp new official store?
Number3:Following the appereace of the long version of the montreaux 71 footage here, serious collectors pointed out that tens of footages like this exist…Iñm sure the dpas has some, as some apeared on the third dvd, and they are not talked about too much like japan 73.
We want the damn real thing!

I doubt we will ever see the rest of that footage. The place to release it was that last double DVD set. I doubt there will really be any other Purple archive DVDs in the future. What else is there?
May 29th, 2010 at 02:01just wanted to let people know that it actually did exist at one time …maybe someone might recall something or jog their memory…. the made In japan vision , all 27 minutes of it , is being produced as part of a new documentary
May 29th, 2010 at 04:23Tracy, I wouldn’t say tons at this stage in the game, but perhaps plenty, possibly.
If this were to be found, and sometimes that is the case with stuff that gets discovered but not uncovered at the same time, I’d be happy with whatever it is, performance or not, because it’s them in that year and it would be interesting to see them either on stage or interacting with the Japanese on TV in just about any way, interviews, games, cooking, whatever.
May 29th, 2010 at 07:56But…. this does sound like it contains performance.
May 29th, 2010 at 07:56– who has promised what to whom?
May 29th, 2010 at 15:09How about the Last Concert in Japan footage from Dec 75. I read the whole concert was filmed and they managed to find the original clips that are on the movie. But how about all the rest , have they found that yet?
May 29th, 2010 at 15:33@20
May 30th, 2010 at 08:49Please provide a reliable source to this information if you’re going to post it. I’m asking because I hope you’re right, but I’ve seen no documented proof that the entire show was atually filmed so I’d like to know where you read it or who wrote it. Honestly, I hope you’re/they’re right.

I don’t think they have found the rest of the ’75 show. Only good quality copies of the stuff we have already seen. It is a shame Mark2 were never filmed in 16mm or 35mm. That would be the best.
May 30th, 2010 at 19:23Strange enough I heard this already some 10 years ago. Wonder how long they will keep on searching.
May 31st, 2010 at 19:22The Tokyo 75 concert WAS ENTIRELY FILMED. We have known this for years. BUT we also know that only copies of the promo Rises over Japan were located. The original footage has dissapeared. I beleive they will be found, as they did with teh CTTB multi tracks.
June 1st, 2010 at 12:59we have located , repaired and treated the 30 min concert from rises over japan and hoping to have a blu ray release later in the year – with new mixes etc . cannot (despite extensive searches) locate the full show – YET . but will keep looking cheers drew

Drew…..
Are you Drew Thompson?
June 4th, 2010 at 11:54@26
I think it’s safe to say it’s him Priest…
@ 25 Drew, any news on the MIJ footage? That’s the holy grail for Purple fans:)
June 4th, 2010 at 15:21It does sound like Drew Thompson, which if it is, is good news, as if anyone knows what is happening in the future re releases, it’s Drew.
I am particularly intrigued by his earlier comment (post #16) re Made in Japan vision (27 minutes) being produced for a documentary. I hope this is him saying that the recently found MIJ footage will surface soon (hopefully fully synced and restored).
If that’s the case, I for one cannot wait.
June 4th, 2010 at 20:13Well…I would expect a Classic Albums made in Japan dvd. The second for DP in this series. Great stuff.
June 7th, 2010 at 17:38What I don’t want is something that has a 30 second clip here and a 1 minute clip there. I want all the footage retored and synced, and released as it should be, as a concert. One of (if not, THE), best live gigs ever recorded.
June 7th, 2010 at 22:54Well Kevin you will be dissappointed, because it was announced from the beginning that the footage consisted of multiple pieces of different songs. Worst is nothing.
June 8th, 2010 at 13:03I got a bootleg of Satriani in Purple, so there has to be something out there better than what I have. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JON LORD. May the greatest rock keyboardist of all times give us another decade of the best and most impeccable music ever.
