Singles & E.P. Anthology ’68-’80
On April 9 EMI will release a 2 CD set called ‘Singles & E.P. Anthology ’68-’80’.

- “Grabsplatter”, an outtake from the “In Rock” album, both available on the “Listen, Learn, Read On” 6CD set.

Yeah, okay. But the set should include only the rarities.
April 7th, 2010 at 21:10Nice,
…but I’d rather have a DVD set of the three reunion shows in Sydney.(sigh)
April 7th, 2010 at 22:38It would be sweet if they would issue it as a collectors lp set. I have all the tunes a million times already, so it is just a another best of cd. Save your money and hunt down the singles instead!!!
April 7th, 2010 at 23:09The Gillan-led “Bird Has Flown” is classic. Mark II always managed to turn it up a notch when doing Mark I songs, whether it be “Mandrake Root”, “Wring That Neck” or this little gem. It would have been interesting had Mark II had more time to re-record or perform more Mark I material than they did.
The piano “Speed King” arrangement is also a favorite.
I first heard “Painted Horse” from the Powerhouse omnibus and always thought it sounded a bit odd. It’s an interesting song but would have sounded out of place as-is on Who Do We Think We Are. It needs a remix.
As I am sure someone will comment, there is not much unusual here, but I’m ALL about an “8-page colour booklet” as Simon Robinson usually does a great job on these projects.
This collection seems a little redundant and overlaps other sets (The Anthology, Singles A’s and B’s, Listen Learn Read On) but might make it easier for younger fans to accumulate some of the harder-to-find stuff in one smaller package.
April 8th, 2010 at 03:41Seems like a thing for collectors.
Not sure if this something for a beginner.
Btw, send me wisdom and strenght, please.
Today might be the final curtain for Ian, my cat.
Although I still hope for a miracle, it looks very bleak.
At this very moment I m in the process of waiting for my transport to the vet and killing time.
Such a strange thing to do, isnt it?
April 8th, 2010 at 10:57But life is strange and so are we.
I’m fed up with this “Best of” kind material releases!!!
GILLAN PROMISED US RECORDING IN FEBRUARY 2010. THEY DIDN’T!!!
Should we expect the new album this year, or NOT??????
April 8th, 2010 at 14:12I hope Ian is alright..!
April 8th, 2010 at 18:42As I tried to post before.
I know its a bit “out of the box” but I am what I am……
Ian has left this building this afternoon.
Very sad about it but I had to make a decision.
Thanx everyone who knows what it is to lose a longtime friend.
Almost 18, survived a long winter, but it was not meant to be that we had a last summer together.
Named after one of my Gods, he follows the footsteps of my dear beloved Zoe who passed in 1995.
I KNOW Ian Gillan had to frown when I confronted him with the story I named my 2 cats after him and his former girlfriend.
I was never up to speed concerning that part of his private life.
So maybe that was one of the reasons he gave me the cold treatment when I met him now 10 years ago, in The Hilton, Rotterdam.
Ian and Zoe have been mine since 1992 and would be part of the “things I love most” when going to an island.
For now, I salute those lovely gracious animals who were willing to share my life in the last 18 years.
Solace?
Not much, I m afraid.
I ll try to put on Jons new album but very possibly that wont do the trick.
Time has to pass.
Again, it has been said before many times by others……
I hope DP and family realise the impact they have on many lives.
After all, I would not have named my cats like that if it wasnt for my love for the DP family since 1977.
I thank you
Goodnight, Mark
April 8th, 2010 at 22:36I hope they do not have a new CD!. Starting with Purpendicular, which was brilliant. The successive CD;s were not as good and starting to get worse. Abandon was okay, Bananas was not good and sounded Forced! ROTD is the worse of them all. ROTD sounds forced to the extreme. The creative well for the singer has run dry.
The singer can’t sing and he has truned Deep Purple into a cabaret act!
In 1974-1975 DP was a funk band… these days it is a lounge act. Sorry lads. the best days are behind them. Gillan can’t sing, so what’s the point continuing/
April 8th, 2010 at 23:16I was hoping for a few of the more obscure single edits that have not been included on the recent CD compilations. If I recall correctly, there are two different Burn single edits (one with the guitar solo and one without) and a Highway Star A-side from the US that was only 3 or 4 minutes long. As others have pointed out, the majority of this set has been made available on other compilations over the years. Interesting that they skipped the You Can’t Do It Right single from Stormbringer, but added some post break-up singles instead. *sigh* I guess you can’t please everyone…
April 8th, 2010 at 23:51Yet another compilation ??
April 9th, 2010 at 01:55With edited songs ??
Maybe 2 tunes to snare completist/collectors ??
No thanks.
I’ll save my pennies for the Come Taste The Band 35th Anniversary Edition.
It’s a great collection of some rare edits, some of which I have never heard. I’ve always enjoyed the singles collections. The original LP collections were great just for the relief of not having to play the old 7″. The first CD singles collection is a permanent fixture on my iPod. It’s a very accessible collection and at least 3 of my friends over the years have been turned on to DP because of it.
Already ordered and looking forward to hearing it.
April 9th, 2010 at 06:06Come on guys… make a new record, we’re waiting for it!!
April 9th, 2010 at 06:16is Grabsplatter really an In Rock outtake as the BBC recording is from September 23rd 1970 and In Rock was issued on 5th June 70 (with the album recordings finished by mid April). Is it not more like between In Rock/Fireball item?
April 9th, 2010 at 12:04All the best to You and Ian both, Priest!
April 9th, 2010 at 12:05My heart felt Condolences to you Priest and to your 2 most treasured critters whom have gone to the Great Feline Palace in the Sky. “Watching the Sky” should be played tonight by us all and we should all go outside and look up with a glass of DEEP PURPLE in a Toast to them both. I haven’t been able to locate that wine yet, so I will have to substitute with one that is close in substance. But I Will be Toasting to them both this evening.
I think now you should let some time go by and when ready, get a dog. No cat will stand up to the ones you had for so long. Turn the page, change the habit, get a dog….
As for this Anthology….I don’t anything here that hasn’t been issued over and over again. The Read, Listen and Learn box set has it all.
The only folks who should indulge in this are beginners whom need to catch up real quick….
Cheers
April 9th, 2010 at 13:57I’ll buy everything DP that Simon R has been involved in …!
April 9th, 2010 at 17:20But as metaljim said you can’t please everyone. I would have preferred the set to stop in 1976 and include even more rare edits released during the band’s existence. Am I crazy or is it just me that would have wanted the Concerto promo single edits to be included?
Since The Anthology, Singles A’s and B’s and Listen Learn Read On have all been deleted this set makes sense.
I know a vinyl edition was planned but cancelled, as well as a vinyl edition of the single box set issued in 2002. Too bad, Ray!
RIP Ian.
April 9th, 2010 at 17:43@9 I see the point for them to continue, but I see no reason for you calling them ‘a cabaret act’ because they are obviously not. I hope they will release a new album and that will be sooner than I think. If you’re not going to give them a chance, that’s your problem. Saw Ian Gillan in Linz on March 31st, and he put on a terrific show. Emotions and vibes were high, and no cabaret would ever be able to send shivers down my spine.
April 9th, 2010 at 17:52ad
Thanx Soren
Btw, I did a typo, Zoe passed away in 2005, not 1995.
Mitzi(…)died at the age of 2 in 1997.
Ian and Zoe had 8 kittens which in the end I could not keep 1 of.
In the beginning I kept Jack and (….)Roger but it did not work out that well in this small house so……
Cheers, Mark
April 9th, 2010 at 23:16@14. No Grabsplatter was not an In Rock outtake, it was, and still is, a BBC session from 23rd Sept. 1970! It’s part of this collection because it was issued as a b side on the NL&R Vol. 3 single SHEP 101 issued in 1980.
April 10th, 2010 at 13:52#20
Mark, my deepest condolences for your loss. A little over a month ago we had to put our dog down after 14 long and wonderful years. While I in no way would compare the loss I feel to someone who lost a child, I honestly believe I know how they feel. He greeted me every day for 14 years, waiting by the door for me to come home. No matter how bad a day I had or what kind of mood I was in, he lifted my spirits without reservation. I feel like the hole in my heart might never heal. I wish you all the best in this time of loss.
Jim C.
April 11th, 2010 at 03:01Priest, sorry for your loss.
I’m concerned for those who always leap to the conclusion that the band have anything to do with such releases by carryng on about a new album instead of putting out the same old re-releases. For Pete’s sake, how smart does one have to be to realise the difference between back catalog output by other labels and current business? Man alive!
Hey Ormandy, these three OZ shows, what evidence is there to back that anyone in Purple’s organization have these in their posession and ready for future release? Only two of the Sydney shows were pro shot in any capacity as far as we know, the rest is all bootleg footage, is it not? And there is also no evidence to back the theory that they were pro filmed in their entirety either. We’d like to know about this third show you speak of as well. On the one night most specifically in mind, the entire audience were allowed to roll cams and take stills, record audio, etc… a film crew was on hand, but who knows what they shot and how it turned out? the other night we got ‘Black Night’ from and pieces used for the ‘KAYBD’ promo cip, and it makes some believe the whole show was filmed? In no way does any of it mean they even own the footage either. Please fill us in, apparently you know something we don’t. I would have to agree though that the spirit was very high those nights, but the shows got somewhat better with the production as the tour hit the US and beyond. Providence, RI was filmed in its entirety by MTV and that is a fact, so this is the real sought after video, no bigger crime has been comitted in post 84 Purple history than that film not at the very least being smuggled out of its resting place… who even knows, maybe it got erased by now, but that’s doubtfull, all we know is that something stopped it from airing and ultimately being released. ‘Nobody’s Home’ promo clip and ‘Space Truckin’ which somehow got an airing in France are living proof it was a spectacular undertaking. At least this piece is much more worthy of uncovering, because it actually exists far beyond reasonable doubt. Ian himself watched it in the basement of the venue that night and commented that it was fantastic.
Grabsplatter was obviously a work out based around two other tracks vocals were put to, ‘I’m Alone’ being one of them, ‘Slow Train’ is the other. Listen to them and you have the basic workings of Grab….. it long with mkII’s ‘Bird Has Flown’ are top pieces in my book, I think they got it right with Grab vs. the other two, its perfect.
This is one for the youngsters as mentioned, a quick catching up it does provide but any die-hard can just as well pass and be alright. At least its from their long time former label, although they owe Purple a lot, they should be making money off EMI, not the other way around, a bad deal usually echoes for eternity. But nevertheless at least they properly secured rights to do this.
Oh yeah, @9, as they say, you can run but you can’t hide… why not just use your real name? Trying to make it difficult only makes it easier to see. Yawn! You’re the only thing past its “sell by date” here. Cheers to all, even you mate.
April 11th, 2010 at 09:14Purplepriest, you did have a last summer with Ian, unfortunately you didn’t know it would be so, for it was in 2009 not 2010. But Ian may well have known and enjoyed it accordingly.
April 11th, 2010 at 18:53Mark, I’m very sorry for your beloved Ian. I hope you find solace in Jon’s new album, or perhaps Pictured Within, which is even more profound. Its title track helped me through a very similar experience 10 years ago. Wouldn’t wish it upon anyone…
April 11th, 2010 at 20:43mark, i know how you feel. we lost ‘bandit’ 2 weeks ago. he was only 4 years old but that did not make it any easier. $600 later for one day at the vet’s! another weeks worth of diagnostics at that rate was not something we could afford. very hard decision to have him put to sleep. i felt like my heart got ripped out and that we let our cat down. he was very attached to me in particular and would follow me everwhere. time does heal though, hang in there. we are lucky enough to still have our other cat ‘cisco’ though.
April 11th, 2010 at 21:21Thanx everyone
I appreciate it, even the humorous nods.
Last saturday I reunited Ian and Zoe in a new burial ground.
An experience with mixed emotions and in more than one way a bit heavy.
Now its time to move on although I dont feel like it.
Music sometimes helps but at moments like these I often dont want to hear anything for a while.
This time I broke the silence with a few friends.
It kinda worked in that sense that it provides a bit of detraction.
Solace its not really…..
I associate saying goodbye and looking back on beloved ones with Pictured Within too.
Now for a stroll into the garden where nature is erupting.
April 12th, 2010 at 11:16Priest, year ago my beloved Golden Retriever passed. He was a huge dog for his breed. I dug a grave for him in my yard next to a tree that was in poor health due to being uprooted during Hurricane Andrew. It was amazing how that tree soon thereafter flourished and grew with vigor. I later built a Tree house for my kids in that tree and from that time on was the sacred tree whereby I would sit and toast my beloved friend…
I have since moved from that house, but the tree stands mighty and unless it is cut down by the future residents, will be there forever in tribute to him. I carved his name and date of birth and date he passed on the trunk. Quite an awesome Headstone don’t you think?
Cheers
April 12th, 2010 at 15:54My first sentence was to read….’years’ not ‘year’…..
Cheers
April 13th, 2010 at 03:03It used to be my favourite idea, under a tree.
Mine was the place under my Japanese pink cherry blossom tree.
But I remember a lot of big roots that I did not want to damage, so……
Still a shame though.
Espescially because the tree is now ill. I ve been told its “something” trees of that species and that age often get that.
I never hated dogs, on the contrary.
My ex her Mother did own a black flatcoat retriever with which I bonded wuite soon after the first burst of outrage when I passed through the gardengate.
Years after my break up I even missed him dearly.
A Golden Retriever is probably one of the dogs I d feel inclined to chose, but there are more.
Right now I dont feel like getting any pets anymore.
April 13th, 2010 at 22:41But never say never…..
You are a pet lover. No rush on when. You will know when it’s time. But again….I’d still go the dog route. Much better companion. I’ve had both too. Funny. I miss every one of my dead dogs. I don’t miss the cats. I did things with my dogs. My cats were just there. That’s the difference between the two. One is just there, the other is happy to be there and happy you are there with them….
Cheers
April 14th, 2010 at 18:42I know I love animals in general although I ll always admit feeling kinda hypocritical being a enthusiastic meat eater as well.
Differences between dogs and cats might be something like comparing men to women.
They are equal but very different.
I dont want to make pretentious assumptions but……
“My cats were just there.”?
Did you ever ask yourself why?
April 15th, 2010 at 20:54Ok, that’s enough of the pet discussions. I feel sorry for your losses but this is way too far off topic.
April 15th, 2010 at 21:14Uh oh….the animal hating topic police have arrived…..
Sorry, but the Animal topic is much more interesting than discussing a topic about an album with songs that have been compiled on other albums over and over again….
We all mentioned our concerns regarding this re-hashed release and have gravitated to a topic more worthy….Is anybody complaining?
I think not…..
Hell I have made my own Anthology. Anyone can. It’s called arranging you favorite songs and putting them on a CD. Anyone can do it….
Cheers
April 16th, 2010 at 03:06Good on you Tracy & Priest: enjoyable read, moving, yet
hilarious! Never mind the off topic, Svante’s just uptight
🙂
April 21st, 2010 at 05:44Hi there,
I don’t still buy this DP’s singles collection CD.
Is there any information of “Stormbringer-Italian A-Side” single in liner-note of the booklet?
Please give article content of part of the “Stormbringer” single in the liner-note.
And, what does “Italian A-Side” mean?
May 3rd, 2010 at 00:13I think “Stormbringer” single editions were released in many countries in 70’s, so…I wonder what does it mean…
Does it means the single was charted in Italian hit chart?
Is it written in the liner-note like that?
Please give some details about the live tracks.
