South Africa, here we come
It looks like the long dry spell for the South African fans is coming to an end. Three concerts were announced in that country for 2010:
- Johannesburg, Friday May 28, Coca-Cola Dome
- Durban, Sunday May 30, ICC Arena
- Cape Town, Tuesday June 1, Grand Arena at GrandWest Casino
The shows are being billed as the Masters of Rock tour where Deep Purple will be supported by Uriah Heep and Wishbone Ash.
Tickets for Johannesburg and Cape Town are already on sale, full details in our Purple calendar. Please note that as of December 18 the shows have not been confirmed yet by the band’s management.
Thanks to Daniel Bengtsson and Tonight.co.za for the info.
Announcements like this usually amount the usual complaints about them touring too much. Let the bitterness commence…. make an album, cut it with the dates, yada yada…
On the upside it is a great billing, too bad they can’t get around to supporting each other more often.
December 18th, 2009 at 19:43I was there when Deep Purple played in SA first time. It was just when Morse came to Purple. It was greats – and far better than these days concerts.
December 18th, 2009 at 21:49COME TO THE USA!
December 18th, 2009 at 23:19Was it big crowds for purple back then, in SA Bo?
December 19th, 2009 at 09:10Their albums don’t sell. They only make money touring. We can whine all we want but the fact is that nobody buys the albums so it doesn’t make sense to put them out. They will do as few albums as possible. There is only one way for them to sell any albums and that ain’t happening. Bring back all past members and do a farewell album. Don’t have Morse or Airy write the material, have it written by the old members, you know the ones that sold albums. Blackmore/Lord/Coverdale and Hughes. Have them write with Gillan/Glover and Paice. Leave Morse and Airey off the album. Then you might have an album that sells. Then do a big farewell tour worldwide and people will go out to the shows. Even in the US.
December 19th, 2009 at 16:57@TC, correct, that’s the truth.

Do you know any group who sells album??
December 20th, 2009 at 05:52except the f…..g top 50 rap shit and all whatever you think nobody sell!!!
we are not in the 70 anymore, people, I should say bastard who don’t respect the work of artists go on the net and download.
and stop your rubbish about bringing the old guys in doesn’t make any sense.DP HAVE TO TOUR of course to make a living and I think its working well for them thank u very much.
we don’t need a farewell tour.
cheers and long live DP.
Last time I checked their albums do sell, hugely.
December 20th, 2009 at 05:54Let me be more clear… their new albums don’t do too well at all, but who’s do? The obvious big sellers only, and there aren’t that many artists new stuff selling big today at all, just a couple of handfulls worth.
But DP do sell records and then some, I’d easily say they’re around 150 million by now, after reports ten years ago that they were around 130 million, do you really think it takes DP a decade to sell 20 million? So it could likely be more than 150 by now, if you use your head. I’m at least making a healthy speculation anyway. More More More is the name os the sales game, period. The stuff doesn’t stay on the shelf forever, it all tends to move units.
Just because they aren’t selling big numbers of the new stuff doesn’t mean they aren’t selling.
December 20th, 2009 at 06:02One more thing, I speak for the US when I say they don’t know Blackmore from a hole in the ground, its simply too late. So don’t be hatin’.
December 20th, 2009 at 06:04In 1995, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep toured South Africa.
Now 15 years later they are coming back, with Wishbone Ash added to the line-up.
I have created an unofficial fan blog at http://mastersofrocksa.wordpress.com. It is not endorsed or supported by the official organizers.
December 20th, 2009 at 07:44Nice page Brian, glad they’re coming back there, its been too long. And nice to see you making an appearance here.
December 21st, 2009 at 06:04@5 probably right. that is what other giant rock groups do–every few years or so they do a farewell reunion tour and make big jingle. then they lay low and re-group for yet another re-union tour or rumour of said tour. ala led zep members-kiss–stones–etc….that said, i am glad DP drives on for us to enjoy.
December 21st, 2009 at 13:48Hi #5
As IG and Blackmore dont like to be in the same City, what chance do you see of old members replacing current line up ?
New album in spring 2010, at least thats what a certain person holding a microphone at the DP Århus concert said.
Cant wait
December 22nd, 2009 at 13:13VERY RIGHT JAMES. ALL THESE CRAP BAND WHO JUST WANTS TO MAKE MONEY.
December 22nd, 2009 at 17:14VERY GLAD TOO INDEED.
MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL.
I look at all the music racks and cannot even find a tab where DP CD’s would be placed aka–the “D” section. Same said for R-bow stuff. I would think with all the new rock guitar games out any new or old DP stuff would sell. one would think anyway.

I suppose you live in America?
Here in Rotterdam DP and Rainbow BOTH have seperate sections.
Often including solo activities
What brings us back to the different LOYALTIES in differnt countries?
1 Gillans lie that the TBRO tour sold badly did ONLY refer to the USA part of the tour?
2 Or maybe Americains are more loyal to the OLD and REAL Deep Purple even when an Americain price winner joined the ranks so long ago?
Interesting, dont ya think?
January 29th, 2010 at 15:57Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmhhhh, this thread is about South Africa.
Are you from there ?
Anyway……
Can someone inform me about this…..
I understood Purple with Steve really sold big numbers in the States while touring there …
Although I also remember them having to combine themselves in double or triple headliners with OTHERS……instead of being the one and only headliner.
1 TBRO tour part in USA did sell poorly? For whatever reason….
Maybe GRUNGE had to do something with it?
The album was released too late? poor promotion?
Here in Europe big halls did sell great, so…..
2 DP did suggest they really REBUILT(?????)with Steve so……
What happened?
Did recession really have something to with it?
3 Even more awkward……If DP is less popular in USA why then did Gillan do his SOLO TOUR in 2006 over there?
Not that I do not enjoy the results on DVD and so but……
February 1st, 2010 at 13:42I expected him to something in Japan or Europe…..
ad 2
Even the Slaves and Master Tour gigs I witnessed in Rotterdam, Belgium and Paris were in lare SOLD OUT venues.
So JLT appearantly not triggered a downward spiral ticket sale wise……
