At last. An officially endorsed live collection… and only a handful of these have been “officially” released before. I’m looking forward to this…
October 28th, 2009 at 08:07This at least sounds like a worthwhile purchase. Unlike most of the crappy “Angel Air” ones! Cheers,Drdp
October 28th, 2009 at 09:38the radio 1 rock show version of ‘if you believe me’ is awesome, assuming it’s one of the five here.
October 28th, 2009 at 09:59Still dreaming of that TIME MACHINE so that I can attend GILLAN gigs
I missed out then……
October 28th, 2009 at 13:37Brilliant, The Tommy Vance session is the ultimate for me, Born to kill was played for me recently on Bruce Dickensons “Friday rock show”, he didnt play M.A.D so im sure looking forward to hearing that magical Colin Towns intro again! Fantastic.
October 28th, 2009 at 15:17BUT ‘ANGEL AIR’ RELEASED A WONDERFUL ALBUM (’79-’80 bbc) WHICH IS A SHAME THAT IS NOT INCLUDED HERE…IN THAT SHOW GILLAN REACHED THE NOTE D6…
October 28th, 2009 at 16:23CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS!!!
October 28th, 2009 at 21:44Look forward to this, Gillans voice was astonishing in those days and the band were simply unique, the combination of Towns writing and virtuosity with the raw rock n roll delivery of the Gillan, Torme, McCoy trio was an extremely exciting mix!
October 29th, 2009 at 07:39The Reading Festival!!! What a gig!!
Didnt stop for the Sunday……but if my memory serves me…..
Budgie & Girlschool on the friday, Atomic Rooster, Samson and Gillan on the Saturday…………to name but a few!
Those were the days!
October 29th, 2009 at 08:38what a rare talent ….this guy is just , words cant express it …. although it was a little wierd seing him grab my mom by the face and give her a big one right on the lips a few years ago
October 30th, 2009 at 18:08my favorite IG vocal era–man could he sing and scream during the Gillan Band era.
November 1st, 2009 at 19:36about IG vocal era I just prefer the 69-79 period…in that time his vocie were simply perfect…
November 1st, 2009 at 20:42I’ll be supporting this release for sure, I think along with the Angel Aire 79-80 BBC CD it will go very well in serving up the best live documents in the tons of shows they played over the best of those years. The 1980 BBC show is the very best imo, that show is amazing! I agree it should be included.
November 5th, 2009 at 20:47Wow.Great memories from that period. When rock was real Rock music.Great band.Good times.
November 6th, 2009 at 10:08THANKS FOR THIS,
LOVE THIS TIME WITH IAN,
HE BE CAME GREATER WHEN HE TURNED TO BLACK SABBATH.
THANK`S IAN THAT YOU DID WHAT YOU DID BACK IN 83..
November 6th, 2009 at 15:27a reliable user on the deep purple italian forum has addressed some issues in regards of this release:
– on 4/3/1981 deep purple played in nottingham (not at the rainbow in london)
– “if you believe” from the nottingham radio show was published in “double trouble” and credited by mistake as “recorded at the london rainbow”
– on 5/3/1981 deep purple played at the london rainbow
– lucille live from the reading festival was included by mistake in “mr universe” (instead of the studio version)
November 6th, 2009 at 20:46Unfortunately I ve to watch very carefully how I spend my money right now.
After years of neglect and putting countless Guilders and Ero s into DP family pockets I m trying to fix my house a bit.
It s a shame cause these Gillan live outings are amongst the ones waited for so long in the past……
A pity as well it took so long to get these out…..
The visualisation of things concerning DP and family still on shelves is a real mindboggler.
What about a decent live double disc with Bonnet during Down To Earth era or a 2 disc with JLT during Rainbow?
Thank God I ll be seeing The Mighty Screamer Graham Bonnet soon LIVE over here….
Just bought my tickets.
I got someone here on board that crazy, SHE HATES BONNET, to go along so that I dont have to stress myself unconscious due to public transport, time schedules and so on…..
We re going to have a beer after the gig now without rushing home….
GRAHAM BONNET ROCKS!!!!!!
November 6th, 2009 at 22:58NOW: WOULD SOMEONE OFFICIALIZE THE WORCHESTER 1983 SHOW WITH B.SABBATH??!!!
November 7th, 2009 at 14:04THAT SHOW IS A MASTERPIECE AND IT HAS A VERY GOOD SOUND QUALITY…
Hi everyone,
of the three post Purple line-ups GILLAN probably was the least famous and definitely the least commercially succesfull but INMHO the most honest and best one! Ian’s performance and style oozes pure hard rock. The songs are not polished up and “pretty”, they just go for the throat and got you by the balls. That’s the way I undestand and love rock music….So I’m extremely happy about the new release.. This will give me something “to chew upon” for the next couple of months!!
Long live Ian, cheers!

November 8th, 2009 at 13:27ABOUT 4 MONTHS BEFORE DISC ONE WAS RECORDED I SAW THEM AT THE AGORA BALLROOM IN ATLANTA. IT WAS A GREAT SHOW. ESPECIALLY IF YOU BELEIVE ME. THE PROBLEM WAS WE NEVER GOT TO “SMOKE” BECAUSE BEFORE THE ENCORE BERNIE FELL DOWN THE NARROW STAIRS BEHIND THE STAGE. IAN HAD TO COME OUT AND EXPLAIN THE SITUATION. HE WAS SO PISSED OFF THAT HE REFERRED TO BERNIE AS “THE GUITAR PLAYER”. I WAS A LITTLE PERTURBED MYSELF. LOOKING BACK ALMOST 30 YEARS, IT IS A LITTLE FUNNY NOW THAT I RECALL THE LOOK ON IAN’S FACE.
December 2nd, 2009 at 01:48I’ve got! Very good gigs, IG’s voice condition is excellent. His band plays very well (especially “Second sight” :)). The record of good quality. Worth buying!
December 8th, 2009 at 12:16Great stuff. Been wanting the Friday rock show session for ages.
In response to the guy wanting Sabbath’s Worcester show released, it is a great gig but it’ll Never get released officially.
However Check out my tribute to the best ever sabbath album..Born again
Full of videos,photos etc.

January 3rd, 2010 at 02:33Great news
January 24th, 2014 at 01:53I saw the band on a pub tour of Sydney in 1981, saw them Mon, Tues and Fri night in one week. Ians’e eye contact with the audience and of course vocals were great. They did a song called Nightmare and I would like to know if there is a live version (not the studio) of this song available anywhere? Also there was a bootleg record I once had Live in Glasgow that had a haunting keyboard intro on Born to Kill, must have been 1982 as Blusey Blue Sea was this old record. Is this available now on CD anywhere as well? Thanks Shane, Sydney Aust
Shane@24- I was at the Penrith gig, my memory is a little vague as to the name of the pub, Sundowners or Sun something possibly? Yes, he went off big time vocally Gillan & he still had his mane back then, he was off his face by the look of it, classic! The only disappointing thing for me was Bernie Torme had left the band & Janick Gers was new to the job & nowhere near the quality guitar player that Torme was! But it was a wild night! I am not sure as to the ‘live’ Nightmare track though! Cheers.
January 24th, 2014 at 22:00I initially provided one bit of erroneous information. I forgot that Second Sight/Unchain Your Brain from the Nottignham gig appeared on the vinyl compilation “Live & Heavy”.
April 4th, 2015 at 15:39As well as the live stuff on Double Trouble, the Reading 1981 version of Bite The Bullet was the b-side for the Nightmare single, and On The Rocks was the b-side of the Restless single. Both were also on the Edsel re-issue from 2007 (along with the three live tracks from Reading 1980 from the Trouble double single).
