Gillan unplugged
Big Ian teamed up with Steve Morris some time ago and they have recorded an unplugged session for UK’s Absolute Radio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N83wy88MMYo
This session plus Ian’s interview will air on Friday, May 15th at 7 p.m. on Absolute Classic Rock. (They kind of broadcast online, but it didn’t work for me.)
Thanks to Daniel Bengtsson for the info.
Fantastic, Gillan maybe can’t reach high notes which he used to reach in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s, but he is the GOD of low notes. his low deep tembre during Better Days is AWESOME.
btw, does Ian have any other T-shirt besides this yellow one? 😀
May 7th, 2009 at 22:29This should stop this “Ian’s lost his voice”-nonsense for a while. Perfect performance.
May 7th, 2009 at 22:50Ian’s great, that’s all…
May 7th, 2009 at 22:54Excellent performance from our great The Silver Voice!!!!!!

wonderful! it’s great to here ian singin’ in his current range of his voice. he should transpose all the old classics 2notes down. the high notes might be much easier to reach and it would sound more like gillan. with the years a voice gets older and it changes too. in his case its a littler lower. why not readjust the arrangements to better fit his voice and singing???
May 8th, 2009 at 01:09I like the unplugged idea, seems to work well although i’m not really a fan of steve morris guitar style. Would like to see IG do this with Michael Lee Jackson.
May 8th, 2009 at 07:30How come it took him 40 years to do this?? How wonderful would this have been to have heard him “naked” in his prime:-) Still sounds great though doesn’t he…They have dropped the key to “Blind Man” from Bm to Am, Purple don’t normally do this but as Stephan suggested this would help him use his now Baritone without pushing it too hard.
May 8th, 2009 at 08:13Big Ian…
May 8th, 2009 at 09:59he love this T-shirt, 8 months ago he perform in israel with same t shirt
I’ve said it once, but I’ll say it again. For those who know not of what they say. Gillan is GOD!
May 8th, 2009 at 10:46What a guy. Absolutely fantastic. Blind Man has always been a great el. blues number (in style that Pink Floyd “invented” anew a few years after DP!!). But what I hear now, Better Days is a fantastic song unplugged. Beautiful. Gillan sings it beautifully. Unbeliavable. He sings differently compared to what he was 20-30 years ago, but not worse, he’s as good as he ever was; just different now: matured and cool. Mr. Gillan, we want more this!
May 8th, 2009 at 11:35great performance. I would like to hear more IG singing in lower vocal range. No, he’s not lost his voice, he’s perfect
May 8th, 2009 at 12:32Eeeeeeeeee-aaaaaaaaaa-oooooooooo-aaaaaaaaaa-uuuuuuuuuu …
… absolutly wonderful … any questions ??? … this the answer !!
What did he sing at the end:
“…
AND WE DON´T HAVE MUCH,
BUT THESE FOR OLD BOYS
AND IS JUST ENOUGH
…”
We don´t need no satisfaction (Rolling Stones),
´cause we need only PURPLENDICULARISFACTION (Deep Purple).

May 8th, 2009 at 15:48Beautiful performance, amazing… He still has wonderful voice, When A Blind Man Cries acoustic is amazing… Better Days – fantastic, track born for acoustic performance!
May 8th, 2009 at 17:22Supeeeeeer !!!!!
May 8th, 2009 at 18:07I must agree with everyone– Great Performance!! Wouldn’t it be great if MTV’s unplugged was still around and the Purple boys did a show.
May 9th, 2009 at 02:29One can dream
sounds great….I agree he hasn’t lost his voice…just his range shifted to the lower….they are playing it in a minor instead of b minor…very clever….;)….
May 9th, 2009 at 07:53Next week(11th-15th May) is Ian Gillan week on Absolute Classic Rock.
At midday and 4pm every day they will be playing one session track and one Ian Gillan/Deep Purple track with presenters Leona Graham and Russ Williams respectively.

May 9th, 2009 at 13:57Awesome, sent shivers down my spine! I have always liked Steve Morris’ style too, everyone should check out the Shadowman-cd Ghost In the Mirror…really classy, excellent hard rock! Cheers
May 9th, 2009 at 20:34not bad at all for someone who lost is voice several years ago, isn’t it
May 10th, 2009 at 13:00ROBERTO AND FRIENDS.
Cheers .Long live DP.
Absolutely fantastic. Gillan’s still the man, the voice of rock bar none. Would love to hear more re-workings of old material like this. Maybe Ian should consider putting out an album. Nice playing by Steve as well.
May 10th, 2009 at 16:00Maybe a Acoustic tour or some acoustic shows with DP would’nt that be a nice tread, i mean hear his voice here it’s amazing.
May 10th, 2009 at 20:28Why don’t try it, i think it would turn out great.
Very unusually for Gillan, and it’s good – now Ian surprised us positively with “One Eye”, and now this. I’m telling you, to change styles and type of music, and to improvise is good.
May 11th, 2009 at 05:18When Gillan give us his blues soul, he gets the best!
these are 2 versions with deep soul, Gillan remains Gillan and his friend S.Morris is a real good player for this sound.
Great Gillan!
cheers&Ciao
May 11th, 2009 at 08:22Ooooooh yes !
May 11th, 2009 at 16:15And give us ‘Clearly Quite Absurd’, ‘Loosen My Strings’, ‘Fingers to the Bone’, ‘Don’t Make Me Happy’ and ‘The Aviator’. Then we could live happily ever after.
May 11th, 2009 at 19:04I hope that this version is put on the next DP album.
or a Deep Purple unplugged album.
Great Stuff, can you please gives us more 🙂
May 12th, 2009 at 08:39Thanks! A very nice ballad and a great piece of blues.

SUUUUUPEEEEEERRRRBBBB!!!!!!
Hearing these to songs like this back to back takes me back to one of my all time favorites of Ian Gillan….’No More Cane on the Brazos’…..

Thanks Mr. Gillan for being in My Universe!!!!!
Cheers
May 13th, 2009 at 02:48Great to hear this!
May 13th, 2009 at 10:18I to hope for an type of “MTV unplugged” session with Purple I’d by both the DVD and CD!
I love Gillan when He plays his Harmonica..
There is another song that people should remember,it is just a little bit unknown but I am sure that you all love this shy lovely blues piece: PAINTED HORSE.
I love it,mainly because his title remind to my surname:
HORSE.
I’d like to get a tatoo with a cool painting on my body in memory of this lovely song.
I’d like to listen a new version performed by Mr.Universe.
ciao Friends
🙂
May 13th, 2009 at 12:15So far they broadcasted four songs, these are: When a Blind Man Cries, Better Days, Black Night and Change My Ways. Very impressive and inspiring at the same time.
May 13th, 2009 at 16:50Superbbbbbbbb clip
May 13th, 2009 at 19:46#8 we all have a favorite shirt–i have a metro manilla aid shirt from the philippines 1981. it was a city aid shirt that workers wore picking up trash for the city. never-the-less i dig this unplugged from IG. hope there is more to come.
May 14th, 2009 at 13:39OK who would be up for a deep purple acoustic tour?
And if you are what would your set list be?
May 14th, 2009 at 19:07For the future,I would hope in a Hevier Deep Purple than in the past..
I Wanna Rock! (new)

long live DP.
Salut.
but the best is “may be I am a leo” which can only be play by Mr Ian Paice.
May 17th, 2009 at 15:45long live DP.
Au revoir.
“OK who would be up for a deep purple acoustic tour?
And if you are what would your set list be?”
Anyone´s Daughter
Wasted Sunsets
The Aviator
Fingers To The Bone
Never A Word
Clearly Quite Absurd
Maybe I´m A Leo
Woman From Tokyo
—
When A Blind Man Cries
Black Night
But not really.
May 18th, 2009 at 16:14All those are good tunes, except for ‘Anyone’s Daughter’. Didn’t like it on the album, hated it more during “TBRO” tour and beyond. Replace that with “Our Lady”…….or “Mitzi Dupree”……
Cheers
May 19th, 2009 at 02:14I just watched this again on the UK website and anyone who thinks Ian has lost his voice is freakin’ nuts this is absolutely fantastic!!
May 21st, 2009 at 22:52Had a captive meeting with ian and the lads on a flight back to oz was very nervy but you could,nt wipe the smile off my face and every one was real nice very down to earth still to meet mr lord
May 22nd, 2009 at 11:49This is not the Steve Morris I saw on stage in St.Louis Mo.USA.
May 23rd, 2009 at 20:16Or is he the one in Nashville.Tn.USA.
Randy I believe you are confused. Steve Morris isn’t Steve Morse. Steve Morris collaborated with Gillan in his Solo efforts in the 90’s. Steve Morse is the guitarist for Purple….
Cheers
May 24th, 2009 at 02:49Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ACOUSTIC TOUR?
First I thought …….
Not very interesting
But……
Dare I say it?
Blackmore and Lord are so much evolved now that they are completely ready to do sucha thing.
Oh Bliss
Oh Joy
I could die with a neverending smile on my face after hearing DP with the magic duo playing
Son Of Alerik
Anthem
Child In Time
When a Blind man cries
Soldier of fortune, time for Gillan to stop being so arrogant or go and take a break
Blind
May 27th, 2009 at 15:30Lalena
April
Anyones Daughter
Wasted Sunsets
Place in Line
Our Lady
Wring that neck
This time around
Priest I think you miss the point here. Folks are stating that it would be cool to see the Present, the Real Deep Purple do an acoustic gig. Blackmore and Lord have been doing the ‘light hearted doodling’ ever since they left Purple. But seeing the Actual Band do an acoustic show would be something to admire. I like you song list though, except for Anyone’s Daughter. Son of Alerik? It was already pretty laid back as it was, acoustic wouldn’t be much different.
Rapture of the Deep
The Aviator
Fingers To The Bone
Never A Word
Clearly Quite Absurd
Silver Tongue
Hey Cisco
Plus you’d have to drop Soldier of Fortune….REALITY CHECK TIME…
Gillan will never do it.
So looks like you’ll have to find another way to die with that smile on your face……
Surely there is something else which makes you happy….
Cheers
May 28th, 2009 at 16:15cool stuff – thanks for sharing – need to pick up one eye asap!
May 29th, 2009 at 05:25Tracy heyder aka. Zeor the Hero<

Great Ian but… the Steve Morris’ guitar is horrible!
