Metallica praises Deep Purple

In case you have not seen this in your morning newspaper, Metallica has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. James Hetfield started his acceptance speech with a list of bands which where important influences implying (to a wildly cheering crowd) they should have been inducted:

We have a small list that we’d like to put some nods out and maybe plant a little seed. To band called Deep Purple… Thin Lizzy, Rush, Kiss, Ted Nugent, Iron Maiden, Motorhead… who we would love to invite through the door now.

Hetfield’s speech starts at around 4:30 into the clip:

RnR Hall of Fame selection process has been a source of controversy for many years as it is run by a closed committee which pays no attention to the input from the fans. The Sex Pistols, inducted in 2006, refused to attend the ceremony, saying “You’re anonymous as judges, but you’re still music industry people. We’re not coming. You’re not paying attention.”

Thanks to 411mania.com for the info.

UPDATE (Apr 12): Hetfield’s selection of musicians that deserve induction was actually a summary of band members’ opinions. At the press conference announcing their induction earlier this year, the members of Metallica each named a band they’d like to see inducted and why, It comes as no surprise that Deep Purple were Lars Ulrich’s choice.

James Hetfield:

Motorhead. Lemmy is rock and roll.

Lars Ulrich:

I’d say Deep Purple. If you say Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, you also have to say Deep Purple. They come as a threesome.

Kirk Hammett:

I would have to say Rush. I think they’re a great band who took rock to a different level altogether in terms of like songwriting and technical proficiency, and I believe that they deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.

Rob Trujillo:

I mean, I love UFO, I know Kirk’s a huge fan of UFO too, and a band like that, you know, should be recognized, and hopefully someday will be.

Thanks to The Rock Radio for the info.

    THANK YOU very much Metallica.
and hopefully the gods of the business music industry will remember the name DEEP PURPLE for the years to come especially for the claps of the audience after the name DP was pronounced. as a fan it make me feel so good to hear the response of the auditorium. thanks again and long live DP.cheers.

I agree with Purple and Lizzy, not the others…You can still hear the influence of these bands in most of todays guitar based music! Metallica are a great band, but they ripped off the NWOBHM unashamedley. I think the RnR hall of fame seems to be handing out inductees at the drop of a hat!

Sometimes I ask myself what are the standards to be inducted in R’n’R HOF – I mean, thanks to Metallica, but even they (and most of the hard rock and heavy metal bands) were heavily influenced by DP, not to say all of them. DP is also very known and popular band in hard’n’heavy comunity – one of best selling in the genre (better then Black Sabbath in term of sales). Still, DP isn’t even mentioned in context of HOF – after this it’d be paradox to se induction of DP, masters and founders of something comming after apprentices that started to play style because – amongst others (LZ BS and TL) – of DP. So, when you see these “standards”, R’n’R HOF loosing its authenticity in term of what really is and was. Therefore, since long time it was so irelevant to me whether DP will be inducted or not, that will not change fact that DP is one of the pillars of hard’n’heavy, one of “must listen” if you want to know why and how Metallica (and all other big hard’n’heavy bands, excluding LZ and BS) happened.

The R&R HoF induction process is misunderstod by many. After a ‘ notable ‘ band such as Deep Purple has been around for 25 years they were eligible for Induction. That year, of course was 1993. Deep Purple was indeed nominated, according to Ian Gillan as well they should have been.
But according to IG he turned down the Honor ‘ until the band retires ‘. I’m paraphrasing here, but Ian did bring it up twice on the old Caramba Guestbook. I took part in both discussions ( about 8 years ago ).

In order for Deep Purple to be nominated again, from what I understand, the R&R Hof Nominating Comittee has to ‘ re-open ‘ their qualifications. To the best of MY knowledge that has never been done before. Deep Purple, as a UNIT, belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ALL of them.

I run the ‘ Induct Ritchie Blackmore into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ‘ campaign. The target year for induction is 2010, and I have a GOOD, no EXCELLENT team helping me try to accomplish this.

The idea behind the campaign is Ritchie’s influence AS A GUITARIST over the development of Hard Rock, the many guitarists he inspired and influuenced and how he helped make that genre of Rock and Roll grow, again AS A GUITARIST.

There is no slight intended or implied against any of the brilliant musicians Ritchie worked with over 40 years while being on albums that sold well over ONE HUNDRED MILLION copies.

You make it when you make it. They should have never revealed the critera for getting in, back when it all started. To get in one had to either sell over 70 million or have been in the business 25 years. They totally broke their own policy as the hall got bigger.

I can’t see Thin Lizzy ever getting in, although I always like them. They only have had 1 song that got any kind of airplay. They never sold alot of records and had one hit so they just don’t belong. Wait I forgot about Patti Smith. NEVER MIND.
Out of the bands Metalica mentioned, of course Deep Purple belongs in. If it was only for Smoke on the Water they should be in. It is one of the most regognisable riffs in the history music not only rock but all music. And every kid that ever picked up a guitar has played that riff.
Remember the California JAM? Does anyone actually remember that Sabbath was on the bill? Deep Purple were much more popular and co headlined with ELP. Sabbath was an afterthought and Sabbath never sold as many records as Purple. The big three heavy bands that came from England in the late sixties early seventies where Led Zep, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. IN THAT ORDER. Sabbath was a distant third and never was close in sales or popularity to the other 2. Or talent. And Sabbath total record sales is still not near the 100 million mark.
Although I don’t like Rush, they have the only other chance of making it in. Rush did sell alot of records and had a huge loyal fan base. So they should get in also. Although as I said, I am not a fan of Rush at all, that voice is one of the most annoying that I have ever heard.
If it was the German hall of fame maybe UFO but you have to be realistic. They never sold, at least not in the states. I think to be in the hall, you should have at least headlined a major tour in decent sized arena’s. Not small clubs. So that would leave UFO out. And Thin Lizzy too.
After all, the hall of fame should be for the best, not the average band who had minor successss.

I think that Sabbath probably sold far more albums than some of you give them credit for. Whether or not they sold more than Purple is a good question, but the fact remains that Purple have never had a splinter group that impacted back catalog sales the way Ozzy’s career did. In the early to mid-1980’s, kids were buying Sabbath albums by the truckload because of Ozzy’s career. I worked in several record stores and kids of all ages were buying Paranoid and Master of Reality. They all wanted the records “by Ozzy’s old band”. I believe Paranoid has been credited as being 4x Platinum in the US alone and that was in 1995. I can’t find Purple on this list, but Sabbath and Whitesnake are. http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?resultpage=1&table=tblTopArt&action=

Don’t forget the Dio Sabbath, Their career actually restarted when Dio joined!! And that magic voice of his with all that power!!! Ozzy really can’t touch Ronnie in that category, But Deep Purple should have been inducted a long time ago! And I mean every member from Rod Evans to Glenn Hughes should walk up there and be inducted!! Long live Deep Purple and I mean every lineup, maybe except The Mk. that included Joe Lynn Turner, even though he’s a good vocalist, he’s a Rainbowite! Cheers friends BP

    TC says:

Even with Ozzy’s influence from his band Sabbath has sold less than 75 million albums.
    Checkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists
Deep Purple is listed between 100-199 million.
I grew up as a music fan in the seventies and Sabbath was never considered to be in the same class as LZ or Purple. They were by far the worst of the big 3.
If you add Rainbow and Whitesnake into the mix, the number of albums sold would be much greater.
I’m not knocking Sabbath, I use to like them and I bought Paranoid. They just weren’t as good as Zep or Purple were, nor did they ever have the record sales of the other 2.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has not completely ignored Deep Purple, however. Amongst their exhibits is one of Ritchie’s Stratocasters and a pair of Ian Paice’s drum sticks.

  12. 12
    HINH says:

Sabbath, the Ozzy eyears sold 120 mill. plus the Dio and T.Martin years.
Sabbath have been the bigges inspirations for new bands.
In the 70´Purpel and then Zep was the biggest, but the history shows that Sabbath are the biggest band – and who f… care, it´s all about good music

    Chris says:

Good for Metallica for mentioning that Deep Purple deserve being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. Knowing that Lars Ulrich’s first concert was a Deep Purple concert and what a big fan he is of them, it’s no surprise that he gave them a shout-out. And Deep Purple SHOULD be inducted into there. They created one of rock’s most famous guitar riffs (Smoke On The Water), Ian Gillan’s operatic screams influenced many singers who emulated him directly and indirectly, and along with with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Deep Purple started a genre of hard-rock that influenced heavy-metal. These three things alone should make a slam-dunk argument as to why Deep Purple belongs in the R&R Hall of Fame. If they ever do get inducted, Lars Ulrich and Bruce Dickinson should do the honors.

    Egils says:

Deep Purple is among the most significant founders of hard rock. They have a significant impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of rock and roll. There is no doubt, they should be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame.

    BlackSparrow says:

…..as a follower of purple since the age of ten and having been at CALJAM I agree with a lot of everything that has been said so far. Purple came on right after the SABS at CalJam and I must say even as a person completely loyal to Purple, SABBATH would be the headliners if that same concert was held today. OZZY even if he is not the superior vocalist has a much larger fanbase and SABBATH would headline even if BLACKMORE RETURNED…returned. IOMMI and OZZY may never speak to one another again but if they toured again and never looked at one another they would still SELL OUT every show they played.

the fact is that Usa/Uk is not the world.
Us/Uk are the only place where Ozzy sales are higher than Sabbath sales.
Us/Uk are the only place where Whitesnake sold more than Purple.
In italy people can believe it !!! totally tasteless for me
In Europe , Japan, Indonesia Purple are much bigger than Sabbath (in Germany, Scandinavia ever bigger than Zeppelin)
Deep purple music is more popular than Sabbath (child in time f.e. is in a lot of u.s. picture suondtrack, none of Sabbath songs can reach this number)
Perfect strangers tour beats 13 tour 10 -1 as ticket sold
In Italy Purple MK VIII sells more tickes than reformed sabbath.
Moreover even in Us Purple are under certified.
burn sold more than 1500000 copies but has only a gold certification
made in japan more than 2000000 copies but it has only one platinum certification
