One Eye on Ultimate Guitar

Ian Gillan One Eye To Morocco

Ian Gillan did an interview with UltimateGuitar.com and by all accounts he was as baffled as we are that a guitar site wants to interview him. Besides the obligatory talk of his new album, some insights into Big Ian’s reading habits, early music influences, and mildly amusing anecdotage have floated:

Two to three weeks ago, I took part in a photograph session in Milan. It was quite weird, actually. Quite a few girls were present, such as my personal assistant, the hairdresser girl, the makeup girl, the translator, etcetera etcetera. Quietly in the background, they gave ‘One Eye to Morocco’ a spin.. They chattered over the album, and no-one really listened. I saw something in the corner of my eyes though; I tried to concentrate on having my photograph taken, and noticed all their bums moving. I thought “Ahh. Mission accomplished here”. That’s exactly what I wanted. As opposed to Deep Purple type material, you might describe ‘One Eye to Morocco’ as more thrusting. The album is much more intimate, and seductive.

And as for the plans of Purple’s next album, the answer is not encouraging at all:

Could you provide an update regarding Deep Purple’s plans for the next several months?
Well, we have shows booked up until January 2010.. I’m just home for a day or two to do some laundry. We’ll be performing little one nighters in Brussels, Berlin and Dubai, and then we’ll perform dates in Japan, Russia, and a batch of European concerts. We have shows booked in South Africa and North America, as well as a UK tour in November. We’ll then tour France over Christmas and January, and on it goes.
Are there plans to record Deep Purple’s nineteenth studio album?
There are no plans, no. It’s like everything, I guess. We don’t make plans – it’ll just happen.

And yeahh… people from USA & Canada, Gillan has just promised you long-awaited North American Tour in 2009, enjoy 🙂

btw, It was one of the most interesting interview I’ve ever read by Gillan… I guess his memory goes down, Ian last performed Child In Time in 2002, not 17 years ago as he told to us 😀

I won’t hold my breath for such a tour… nice to see some contrasting interviews though.

There was atime that I would drag myself to some kind of place where they sold tickets or cd s , even when I was serously ill.

    I lost that passion

    That saddens me.

But I might be wrong to think like this.

I should learn of the past.

The HOBL cd was, although it has great tracks on it, a bit dissappointing to me after Perfect Strangers.
I really really enjoyed the gigs of the tour, saw them 4 times during 87

In retrospect it often was like this…..

Albums sounded a bit underproduced, too tame , non representative of their live appearance and sound, and many times you would be surprised at the live shows.

This was the same for GILLAN untill Double Trouble , Whitesnake untill 1987, and even Rainbow had this , ahem, problem.
The Turner era sounded live much better. Heavier, less polished.

I often thought albums were polished because they hoped for commercial succes outside the core of heavy rock fans as well.

In recent times I wondered HOW ON EARTH, an experienced outfits of people like DP could let it happen that a new album was badly produced.

In my DP circles we often call the nowadays DP The Happy Purples.
    PUN INTENDED.
Even IG said something like we call ourselves The Lucky Buggers in a recent interview.
It is because we think they have become without a certain agression factor the band needs in order to excite.
Ofcourse I wish everyone, and I MEAN everyone, happiness and so on.

    But still……..

    Well, again, my opinion.

Appearantly loads of people get genuinely excited and happy witnessing DP since 1993, so……

    Ok….

    Well then….

    Let the crucifixing begin……

    It s about time well.

    Crimson Ghost says:

Your ‘happiness’ must be that ‘warm gun’ John Lennon sang about.lol!

“Hates a habit, it’s hard to shake your curse”
(is that laymen enough for you?)

I agree about ‘HOBL’ touring, but I never found much wrong with that album, it succeeded in it’s intentions and still sounds alright all these years later… could have been much worse, “S&M”, “Abandon” anyone?

ROTD = the wrong after approach, too pedestrian and too much white noise. But I’m not so sure production/mixing and mastering would make all the difference, because whats still underlying might not be so easy to boost by just knob twiddling… I think he did the best he could considering, but the question is, did they?
    (ever consider blaming both?)

    I do all the time
    Didnt you notice?

  6. 6
    Crimson Ghost says:

Well, I said that with no hindsight further than your last post.
I’m not a fan of MB, but perhaps ROTD wasn’t worked on anymore by them than it was him… too hastey imo, it could have come out much better.

Priest, your Passion to run out and buy CDs and Concert Tickets ran out with your Youth. You have become a bitter Old Crusty person whom wallows in the past and “Can’t Let Go”, blaming all in the wake of it all on those whom don’t fit your little perfect music puzzle to your satisfaction.
No matter what Gillan writes, you criticize. You make it clear….Blackmore could s..t words on paper, and you would eat it up……’You know what they do with s..t eating dogs?’ They put them to sleep……it’s the only cure….might be time to call Dr. Kevorkian.

    Cheers

    @ 6

I often do that as well, writing and pushing on the button too soon.
But on the other hand, I should better ignore some persons completely, so I m to blame partially.

You dont like RB, well I would not have guesses that, hehehe

    @ 7
You re talking nonsense again, like CG did on the same matter.
But this is your favourite hang up I suppose, distorting the the things being said.

I think you are better off with Dr. Korsakov.

    Take care.

  9. 9
    Crimson Ghost says:

I am a fan of RB, a big one in fact, but it’s all behind us.

Might be the same with Purple for you, but the website does read “Deep Purple” and there are plenty of other places to talk about RB so much, which is where I’d be if I was interested in that. You just haven’t gotten your fill of him yet and don’t see any of the others as anymore than living off his back, probably.

I think Tracy’s post was funny, because thats all it was meant to be.

Hang ups? Pot_Kettle_Back! We all seem to have them.lol!

I admit, I NEVER get tired of Ritchies playing, his many great songs, solos, and so on.

    He might be a bastard, I dunno……

Probably most people have bad and good traits, confusing but still……

I started with THS years ago and it sort of stayed with me.

I dont think its all behind us

Like I, HZ and many others will never stop saying…..
DP would have much more integrity if they did NOT play so many old tracks, produce more NEW MATERIAL instead of touring everybody crazy and being lazy in between.

Yeah, I know they ALL were part of this old ,aterial the audience in large numbers seem to want to hear for a zillionth time , except for Mister smiley ofcourse, but wasnt it Ian Gillan once advocating the point of PROGRESSION as a very important reason why he quit DP in 1973 and why he hesitated to restart in 1984?

I do understand all kinds of practical reasons why he changed or shifted but cut the crap around it then.

    Just say,….

    Dear Folks and Fans

I am here to please you all and espescially my bank account

I intended to sit in the sun instead of the shadows of DP

So I cannot play a lot of Morse era tracks, the shows would not sell….

    Please understand

Yours , old but arrived Mister Gillan

  11. 11
    purplepriest1965 says:

Ofcourse Don was not part of that large cv as well

1 More reason to stop the portion of old material on stage
2 With Roger and Don in the band they could easily play some Down To earth Tracks
3 At least Don does a great job filling in Jons shoes

  12. 12
    Crimson Ghost says:

Sweating the small shit isn’t going to change anything, never has, never will. It’s just a waste of energy, which is turned from it’s original state which is positive, to a negative state because you chose to whine.

I simply don’t care about ups and downs, there aren’t enough downs to register with me anyway. And don’t tell me about their live act just because of Youtube, are you getting out to see them? You just like to complain… and thats the only thing worth complaining about here.

It’s your choice and your life, live it up, but don’t expect the silent treatment from the opposing end that you’re constantly goading.

  13. 13
    purplepriest1965 says:

    @ 9 and 12

I said it before, you distort thruth and things being said….

If you would remember my writings as you would expect from someone who says THIS IS WHAT HE DOES you would know I saw a lot shows with Steve since the beginning.
AND that I did and do write a lot about thins I like, so cut the crap, professor Pig!

I dont expect anything but it bewilders me very much that some people do like to spend so much energy on me, hehehe

Why should I go somewhere else?

    Why dont you?!

The last one was 3 years ago.

Did they really change after that?

  14. 14
    purplepriest1965 says:

    Mmmhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, text got misplaced

    Well, I guess its ok

    All that clever people here

  15. 15
    Crimson Ghost says:

Not distorting anything, just repeating it clearly.

I’ve seen them 12 times in four countries and four US states since 1985 to 2004. Not once yet have I been let down by a hoarse Gillan or no encore from Blackmore, etc… do you call that luck? If so, good for me.

  16. 16
    purplepriest1965 says:

    Like JLT once said …..

Is this discussion about which man has the longest dick?

  17. 17
    purplepriest1965 says:

    Btw,

    ONLY 12 times?!

    Not seen them since 2004?!

    How disappointing….

  18. 18
    Crimson Ghost says:

I live in the northwest of the U.S.A., not much makes it this way… they’ve played this area twice in 23 years now… hello, I’ve had to go far and wide to see them, or rather chose to, but I would have seen no more shows if I didn’t. I don’t live within miles of locations to see them, LA is 1500 miles away and they don’t play Seattle.

I’ve seen them in Canada, US, Mexico and Australia, I’m grateful. Why be disappointed?

Since I collect the recordings, the last time I think I missed much would be the first leg or two of 2006, the 2004 shows were on par from the first to the last night imo.

So I’m good with 2004 and I hope if I ever see them again I don’t break the good luck pattern, honsetly.

  19. 19
    Crimson Ghost says:

    @16

No, I was describing my luck compared to yours, I think your mind is wandering in a peculiar direction there bud.

  20. 20
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

Hmmmm….I wonder why JLT was interested in the Longest Dick? Could it be because he wanted to visualise it with his lipstick wrapped around it?

    sorry, I could resist that….

    Carry on…..

  21. 21
    Rascal says:

Doesnt he collect ‘big dick’ polaroids………

    Another one for the album……

  22. 22
    Rascal says:

Snap snap, grin grin, wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more?

  23. 23
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

    Boink Boink…..
