Jon Lord: Mark 3 reunion is ‘hot air and wild speculation’
Jon Lord has posted a comment on his website to recent press rumours of an impending Deep Purple Mark 3 reunion with Lars Ulrich offering himself for the drum stool:
‘It all seems like a lot of hot air and wild speculation to me,’ writes Jon Lord, and states that he has not been asked to be involved in a Mark III reunion – and even if he were, ‘I would not be able to even imagine it without the presence of Ian Paice.’
What a gentlemen he is,Jon lord, nobody can replace Ian Paice on the drums
January 6th, 2009 at 20:05Lars was the only Metallica member Ritchie seemed impressed with though
January 6th, 2009 at 21:37ritchie doesn’t like ulrich.he stated that in an interview in the 80’s.Apart from that he likes kirk very much.
January 6th, 2009 at 21:58After all this we have the latest mark of purple why do we need to change with an older mark?
I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ‘HOLD ON’, LOVE DON’T MEAN A THING’ HOLY MAN’ ‘YOU CAN’T DO IT RIGHT’ LIVE, BUT IT WILL NEVER HEPPEN…
January 6th, 2009 at 23:45JON LORD IS A REAL GENTLEMAN…
Can you imagine a tour with 20:00 starting “MK3” with Ian Paice and 21:30 Deep Purple following? + maybe some jams and fun from time to time on a tour? All those great guys together? I can’t… I’d get wet down there:). Funny to even think about it, that would be more than awesome:). Ok, stop dreaming, wake up!
January 7th, 2009 at 00:04Seems Jon is on board with what I sent on the previous Blog…..It Ain’t MKIII without EVERYONE. Paice isn’t going to do it. Not with Purple still Crankin’. Now, if Purple ever called it a day…..then that opens the door for who knows what..But until then, all YOU Poor sap who a still craving what you can’t have…….OH WELL.
Listen to the many Live CDs and Records from that era.
That’s why they recorded those concerts…..for future pleasure…..YOU ARE IN THAT FUTURE!!!!!! Just put in the CD……
Cheers
January 7th, 2009 at 01:42I’d just love to see Glenn and Dave sing one song together on stage for once in a lifetime after 1976. FOr me it’s more realistic than MkIII reunion. I will propose “You Keep on Moving” and “Highball Shooter” for another choice.
Jon Lord is a wise gentleman and he enjoys good times on his classical music for now on.
Paice is in Deep Purple now and I think he will prefer to play “Smoke on The Water” for another hundred times than to retreat this one.
Ritchie is now living in his beautiful world, so why one should bother him to fly to another planet?
Cheers..
January 7th, 2009 at 02:02LOLs…every 6 months somebody floats this turd.
Every 6 month JL or RB flushes it.
I’d buy a ticket to see a show with Blackmore/Lord/Coverdale/Hughes/name your solid drummer.
But none of these fellas seem that interested.
January 7th, 2009 at 03:36The current incarnation of Deep Purple is the legitimate one in that it is the result of the natural evolution of the band. Purple as it stands right now has its origins from the Mark II reunion and that version of the group that is generally considered to be “the” Deep Purple–Mark I being the “original” band nothwithstanding.
However, it is interesting to note that a Blackmore-Lord collaboration along the Deep Purple vein, i.e., a hard rock style of music and performances of Purple material, could claim a stronger pedigree as it would contain two of the three “founding” members and two of the three original soloists. Throw in a couple of Mark III members, and you have an unrivaled pedigree.
Even so, the proposed line-up could not be called “Deep Purple,” and could not be called a “Mark III reunion” without the inclusion of Ian Paice. However, even with a Paice replacement, the proposed band wouldn’t be any more of a tribute band doing Mark III material than the current Purple doing Mark II–or Mark I–material. The standards have to be universal. Let’s be fair.
It would be inappropriate for Ian Paice to abandon Deep Purple for a “reunion” since he’s already IN Deep Purple. Coverdale is currently successful. Lord might go in if everyone else did, and Blackmore hinted at a one-off performance. Only Glenn Hughes openly espoused the idea. In short, I don’t see this happening.
As far as I’m concerned, this Mark III-based band can call themselves anything they want–except “Deep Purple”.
On the other hand, certainly, two Deep Purples are better than one!
January 7th, 2009 at 03:56MK III – Yes.
January 7th, 2009 at 06:34Blackmore, Coverdale, Lord, Hughes and Paice.
What is a reunion without Paicey ?
It´s nothing !!!!
But I think, the main problem called Mr.Hugh Night !
January 7th, 2009 at 09:23No Deep Purple past-reunion without Paicey!
January 7th, 2009 at 12:00But it could be nice a Hughes/Coverdale project playing the Mark III/IV set list!
A lie can be halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:02Lars is certainly a capable drummer but I can’t imagine him playing You Fool No One or Lay Down Stay Down and really doing it justice. It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got the swing!
January 7th, 2009 at 12:11Um, I do believe something is a foot to make this happen, but not as a full blown tour. Think instead of a charity show, later in the year. A one off for good causes. It could happen and plans are afoot!
January 7th, 2009 at 14:21Deep Purple has its roots in the sixties. The band developed from MK1 to MK8 nowadays, with a lot of changes in line-ups. DP is more than 40 years of ROCK-HISTORY AND ROCK-PRESENCE ! Every DP and not-DP-fan prefers another line-up, that’s for sure, nothing wrong with that.
January 7th, 2009 at 16:45I can only speak for myself saying that I have 3 line-ups that have been/are the inspiration in my rocking life :
MK2a, MK2b MK2c, MK7 and MK8. My favourite line-up nowadays is MK8, for simple reasons : they’re good ! (imho better than DP has ever been), I can see and hear them live (the last 3 years 5 times !) and, very important : I’m living in 2009, in the present, and so is MK8. Extra remark : a DP-line-up without Ian Gillan is not a real Deep Purple for me.
As I said : this is my view on line-ups and/or bandmembers. And I respect everyone’s other taste or opinion.
Cheers and bottoms up.
Ger.
After the last Whitesnake gig I´ll say….Please don´t!!
Coverdale can barely sing these days and would be an parody of his former self,Lord is old and content,Paice has his day job,Blackmore likes money but is totally whipped…..and Hughes?? He´ll probably be up to it as the workaholic he is,but at the end of the day I think he´ll turn it down, when he realises he´ll have to Cover DC´s lack of vocal resources!
To those of you who mentioned Lars Ulrich,Lee Kerslake and Yngwie Malmsteen…..Get a grip!Ulrich is a crap drummer who has no technical abilities whatsoever,Kerslake once was great, but today he´ll probably drop dead with heart failure on his drumstool due to obeseity!! Malmsteen…..You can´t be serious!! If you think Blackmore was bad, you´ll find out he´s mother Theresa compared to Malsteen!!
Thanks but no thanks, just leave me with the memories while I crank up “You fool no one”, from MK III the final concerts at maximum volume! ROCK ON!
January 7th, 2009 at 19:49Stefan: ahahaha what you said is true!!!
January 7th, 2009 at 20:24Bobby Caldwell or Borromie Barlow would be the best drummer for this line-up in my opinion.
Sarebbe il regalo più bello che potrebbero farci, é stata la migliore formazione a mio parere. Peccato sarà un sogno che mai si avvererà.
January 7th, 2009 at 20:48Peccato veramente peccato. W MARK III. FF
Bobby Rondinelli!!!!!
January 7th, 2009 at 21:36Sarebbe un sogno…
Ciao a Tutti
Luca
January 7th, 2009 at 22:22The very best of purple:
January 7th, 2009 at 23:07David, Glenn, Ritchie, Jon and Ian !
What a fantastic band!
Chad Smith would be a choice.
Bobby is in Over The Rainbow, but then again more than one gig at a time is the norm these days, which is why a one off concert by mkIII would even be possible, if Paice could afford one night, and it’s up his alley, you never know… promoters alert, I want my 10%, lol!
January 7th, 2009 at 23:45Btw… I agree with what “T” says, particularly pointing out the fact that they could not use the name “Deep Purple,” Ian Paice involved or not.
January 7th, 2009 at 23:47I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR AND SEE JOHN LORD JAM WITH OTHER MUSICIANS LIKE LARS ULRICH, ETC. BUT I DO NOT THINK THEY SHOULD NOT PERFORM OR RECORD UNDER THE NAME DEEP PURPLE BUT GIVE THE BAND ANOTHER NAME. FRANK MILLER, FAN AND FRIEND OF DEEP PURPLE SINCE 1968.
January 8th, 2009 at 00:46I predict the only reunion will be happened if Deep Purple inducted to Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame. What’s it gonna be?
January 8th, 2009 at 07:19No Paice, no Purple.
January 8th, 2009 at 09:32Why couldent they if they came toghether with a new drummer, just take a new name do an interesting record without the obligation to play a lot of purple oldies.
January 8th, 2009 at 09:44I do think that Pacey is the best stilewise. But there are some exelent drummers out there.
And if they do it without any commersial intresst of getting a sellout polished lame radiohit, And just let the music do the talking and explore and go crossower in stiles like a blussy classical jazzy funky hardrockjunktion ill 100% go out and buy the record.
Hi Michiel
Interesting page you ve got there
I did not quite get totally into it , no time.
January 8th, 2009 at 10:15It seems to me you re not a vegetarian?Hehehe
Maybe you should indeed apply at UNOX?
Money is the only reason if they do reunion, but i don’t think so. Seems, the current line up is so solid, they look so cheerful on the stage, no one get stressed as it happened when Ricthie was there.
January 8th, 2009 at 11:03Hello
someone knows the drummers I old:Bobby Caldwell or Borromie Barlow?
I am a drummer and I can say they are among the best of their (Paicy) generation.
There are many underrated drummers, for instance, out of all the great drummers that never achieved huge stardom, John Hiseman has to be my favorite.
January 8th, 2009 at 15:46yes Hiseman togeher with Billy Cobham is one of the best ever but He is better for jazz rock fusion.Deep purple need a rock drummer…
my favourite drummers ever:
Ian Paice
Borromie Barlow
Bobby Caldwell
Jhon Hiseman(inventor of double bass drum)
Billy Cobham
Simon Philips
January 8th, 2009 at 18:59I REALLY hope this is just a stupid BS!
I would really love to hear a rock record from Mr.Blackmore again.
But, for the Love Of God, what would be a reason to do it with Purple Mk.3?
When Ritchie will do it (and I have a tingle, that he will eventually), I would see 2 paths:
Rainbow, with Doogie White on vocals, amazing singer… I absolutely love his voice and performance! (also, maybe Dio could still cut it, but somehow I don’t see it happening…)
or
Something totally new, with someone with seriously high range voice on the vocals and the style should be something really HARD.
But, I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens…
January 9th, 2009 at 01:12If any should replace Ian it must be Ian haugland
January 9th, 2009 at 07:53or Mark Nauseef or Carl Palmer…wonerful players…
January 9th, 2009 at 11:51it seems that
a lot of You hope in this replacement on the drums only for this happening mark3.
and overall we know that nowdays MONEY makes a lot of things..
I don’t like this way to think..
😛
perhaps one day
Nick Simper and Rod Evans wish a remake of mark1 ?
mark1+2+3+4+5+6+7+….+ ∞ = mark.eting only
January 9th, 2009 at 12:59Ian Paice!
January 9th, 2009 at 13:26I would do anthing to here them play the proper version Soldier of fortune not just Lord paying it on the organ and Coverdale singining
January 9th, 2009 at 15:59In practical life the wisest and soundest people avoid speculation……….
January 9th, 2009 at 16:53No Lars Pleaseeeeeeeeeee!!!
January 9th, 2009 at 16:59MKIII is not looking for a drummer because they will not reform…we are just dreaming…
January 9th, 2009 at 19:02Wise and sound people should also stay away from threads like this
January 9th, 2009 at 21:53Which places you where Priest…….
Cheers
January 10th, 2009 at 01:20Having Lars Ulrich onstage with ANY DP line up is like getting someone from a pub team and putting him in the premier league.
January 10th, 2009 at 10:51Deep purple did the same with David Coverdale 1973 when He singed in pubs….but I don’t like Lars drumming too…
January 10th, 2009 at 13:50Good point, I know Sean Bean did it in ‘When Saturday comes’, I am not a massive mk3/4 fan but the boy Coverdale can sing, there’s no denying that, he was an unknown but when DP heard his voice as evidence of his talent he was in, simply because his talent and ability was so blindingly obvious, we have all heard Metallica and the lack of evidence is very obvious, so this rumour has been put to bed, how many bands could also boast a bass player (Glenn Hughes) who not only looked the part in his prime but he could give the lead singer a run for his money any day? I am quite happy to be a fan of this current line up, if there was a MK2, MK3 reunion with Ian Paice (which I doubt there ever will be), I would go along but to me it would just come across as nostalgia by numbers, bands like Metallica are from a completely different area of music to Deep Purple, the drumming sounds like a wheelie bin full of marbles falling down a metal staircase, no colour, no finesse, no humour, just pure unabated agression, it would be like getting some council estate/inner city ‘hardman’ dressing him up in boxing trunks and trying to pass him off as Muhammad Ali in his prime. If DP played with biscuit tins as drums, elastic bands as guitar strings and a one string bass, they could still easily outplay Metallica.
January 10th, 2009 at 15:23Would Lars Ulrich fit with any Mark of Deep Purple? Probably not. But to say that the man is not talented is absurd. I know I am in the minority here, but I anjoy Metallica (drumming included.) Cozy Powell would have been the perfect fit for this “Dream Project.” I agree with Roberto that Carl Palmer could pull it off, and perhaps Ansley Dunbar.
January 10th, 2009 at 16:13Seven-47!
I enjoy Metallica as well and that´s were he belongs,DP is way out of his league!ROCK ON!
January 10th, 2009 at 16:36#44 purplepriest1965
well said
Lars Ulrich?
ahahah
January 10th, 2009 at 16:43Maybe Pierre van der Linden should do it then?
January 10th, 2009 at 20:28Ian Haugland???
January 10th, 2009 at 20:44HaHaHaHa!
What a joke!
Ritchie will be playing with Candice for the
rest of his life, there will be no morePurple for him!
Thank God!
If anyone can take this idea seriously, I can expect a call to perform ‘La Traviata’! I actually thought this was a joke, Jon Lord has been incredibly diplomatic to say the least.
January 11th, 2009 at 09:36Yes, Mr. Lord is quite diplomatic about a subject that seems to raise it’s head every now and then…of course a MkIII reunion will never happen, but thanks to GH we still get to hear those great songs live(sometimes with different, yet interesting arrangements), and the man really delivers!! Check out his Live in Australia dvd from 2007.
As for some of the suggested drummers : Jon Hiseman & Bobby Caldwell, stunning drummers both, Rondinelli’s a powerhouse, Chad Smith too. Carl Palmer, a master!
Lars Ulrich : integral part of the Metallica sound & overall concept, but mediocre drummer for sure.
Priest : I’m glad that someone remembers Focus & Pierre van den Linden…extraordinary drummer and one of the best of his generation I think. Somebody mentioned Barriemore Barlow in some blog also : his work on Jethro Tull’s Heavy Horses-album still blows me away, magnificent!
Take care everyone, cheers
January 11th, 2009 at 14:34I mentioned Borromie Barlow (I am a drummer)
January 11th, 2009 at 15:12Chad Smith and Rondinelli overrated…
Mark Nauseef much underrated. The rythm section (so plus bass player Jhon Gustafson) on Gillan’s ‘cleair air turbulence’ is simply magnificent…
You are right about Mark Nauseef, Roberto…his playing on Clear Air Turbulence,& Scarabus also, is exceptional. To watch him play on Gillan Band’s Live at The Rainbow 1977 dvd is a real treat too!
I actually prefer all the IGB albums(I recently purchased Rarities 1975-1977 cd, didn’t have the time to listen to it yet though)to some of Gillan’s later solo work.
Bye for now Roberto, keep on banging those skins…I have been for over twenty years myself.
January 11th, 2009 at 15:54Bobby Rondinelli would at least be credible and he can play drums, LARS ULRICH CANNOT! Bobby would be an embarrased family member sat round the table but Lars Ulrich with Deep Purple? It’s like finding a burglar in your house, would you cosh the theive, call the police or feel sorry for him? If Lars Ulrich walks on stage with Deep Purple, I wouldn’t go if there was a million pound cheque and Paris Hilton offering me a good time, it would be like sucking money and saying talent can go to hell, I wouldn’t attend such a farce for a fiver, it would be like crapping on the DP legacy to insult them to have Ulrich sat there.
January 11th, 2009 at 16:00Ulrich just shared the stage with Gillan in 2006…
January 11th, 2009 at 22:56can’t understand why rondinelly is so mentioned…there are a lot of drummers better than him…
Plis!!! in metallica ulrich play(played) with a triple speed, more and more changes in their music than D.P. maybe felt in feeling. ulrich in DP will be only a hobby for him, easy.
January 12th, 2009 at 01:15different styles.
ulrich is good in double bass drums (was)
Paice is god in a one bass drum (was)
They only drummer that would have been qualified to replace Ian Paice would have been the amazing COZY POWELL. Had he been still alive & was offered the right amount of money it would have happened. Forget that fool from Metallca. Cozy worked with Ritchie before of course & with David & Jon Lord so it would have been very easy for him & it would have worked for sure! He was such a good drummer . A drummer that worked with the Michael Schenker group called Ted is very good he would be ok he knows hard rock, but Cozy was the man listen to how good he sounds on the Yngwie Malmsteen album Facing The Animal.
January 12th, 2009 at 11:24alf
January 12th, 2009 at 13:40it’s clear that you are not an experinced drummer or focusing drummer listner. In fact Paice is much more musically, swing, refined, inventive, unique style than Ulrich.
The question is not to be able to play Purple songs (I too can play them) but it’s the way you do them with your own style…Paice style is unique while there are thousands of drummers that can play more or less like Ulrich
Everyone in this wolrd would not even compare them…
You clearly don’t know enough well Paice and sorry but you said a big crap…
I love Cozy Powell even if I found Paice more musically and refined) but I hate ‘Facing the Animal’, no good songs there.
January 12th, 2009 at 13:42But He could have been the right person to replace Paice as he did once with whitesnake…
All marks florished changing Ritchie for Tommy,… Gillan for the wild bunch,.. but it started going down (Freddy King) when Lord was replaced and it goed down when Glover is replaced,… it will stop when Paice is replaced.
I’m not saying who’s the better musician,… I’m fond of (almost) all as long as they ad something meaningfull to the DP story,… but purple always had it’s backbone,… whtihout a backbone,… ya have,… how shall we name it,… kinda Michael Jacksonish in jeans & rockin’ boots,… no nose,… no balls,… no thrill.
January 12th, 2009 at 17:40OK, here’s the concensus.
Both Deep Purple and MK3 go on stage.
Paice drums with both bands and tell me where they perform,… I’ll take a plane & live on that memory untill the nurses in the elderly home yell: “Lock up that old fool,… give him a shot and take away his earplugs,… he can’t hear a damn thing anyway,.. deaf as a mule.
Go paice,.. go.
January 12th, 2009 at 17:51#62 you can apply your same words or reasons ( paicey vs ulrich) between blackmore – morse, lord -airey, for example.
January 13th, 2009 at 06:33Because if that reasons are the sames the DP mark 8 is a crap and i dont believe.
i don´t know only drummers would speak about drummers.
sorry for my spanishinglish. jeje
bacause of this voice about Ulrich..
Last night had a real nightmare:
I “saw” Ian Paice on the drums with MetallicA playng the song “Master of Puppets”…..
ahahahah
[fade out with evil laughter].
=:->
January 13th, 2009 at 09:13Ulrich with Purple would be a nightmare
January 13th, 2009 at 12:22but Paice with Metallica would be very funny!
ok so so whats the big f***n deal why shouldnt they do it including paice.lets all not forget that its us the fans that made it possible for them to have their lifestyles (records cds t shirts concerts).i remember very clearly as a kid having to save up my pocket money for weeks so i could buy the then newly released made in europe lp.im sorry but i dont wanna see or hear whitesnake or the morse purple or glenn hughes band or that ridiculous blackmore medievil sh*t(i swear one day i will really go and see one of his shows just to see what sort of people atend such attrocities),they should just do it for the fans period they owe us that much and the same goes for robert plant refusing the zeppelin reunion.
January 14th, 2009 at 05:04But the idea of Paice playing with both line ups one after the other for a number of shows does kind of smell of not only a musically entertaining idea, but a maximum profit too.
January 14th, 2009 at 09:27Just think….
(god I hate male ego trips, you have to set that nonsense down for something like this)
The technicalities of drumming, guitar playing, and singing dont interest me in the slightest….
So called ‘experts’………People who bring confusion to simplicity…..
January 14th, 2009 at 10:44Say if there is a break in the current DP tour then Ian Paice could go off to do some show’s with David & the other’s & return back to the current line up, it’s the only way it could work. You can’t have 2 DP line ups around at the same time , would just be some nostalgic concerts & you don’t really need anybody else for that.
January 15th, 2009 at 10:07Ritchie is really the man for that to happen if he agrees. How about another California Jam from all the bands that were at the raceway in 74. All the members of Black Sabbath are still alive would be great!
METALLICA will be inducted into rock and roll hall of fame in the US on 4 april.
January 16th, 2009 at 06:14The “bad” drummer lars Ulrich said: we’ve done this our way 28 years later we´ve here”.
let play Ulrich in DP mark III, and maybe in 25 years DP will be inducted in “hall of fame”.
hall of fame…who cares about it???….
January 16th, 2009 at 13:47Hall of fame is CRAP
January 16th, 2009 at 16:37alf+
Lol, that’s funny, yet it seems to be a very good prediction.
Too many artists are in this HOF that don’t yet belong, and too many not inducted that do belong… the committee is corrupt through ignorance and petty axes to grind against artists they don’t acknowledge because they don’t like them enough… when it really should go off a much more solid researched merit system, through accurate historical demographic figures, but they’re a bunch of uneducated snobs, Jan, the former owner especially… and this guy calls himself a chief, lol!
January 16th, 2009 at 17:31Mamas & Papas? PLEASE! Your’re Crimson Ghost.
January 16th, 2009 at 19:08You’re right Crimson Ghost!
January 17th, 2009 at 03:18The way the current Deep Purple line up is going they are destined to burn out. Steve may want to spend more time with his family in the future . So it’s likley this line up may spilt up , then mark 3 would stand a chance again. But I can’t see them lasting too long Ritchie is always moody all the time & he wants the band to sound the way he wishes. He would get mad when Glenn brings his funk & soul all the time. The same problems as 75 are likley to turn up.
January 17th, 2009 at 15:17what will happen in the future?
January 17th, 2009 at 23:04maybe:
– deep purple mk8 stop playing
– reunion tour with mkIII
– one show reunion mkII
and thany goodby to everybody…but there will be time to play pop or blues untill at the age of 70…
The Deep Purple institution will never close, and the music itself will never vanish, therefor who knows what the future holds? They don’t look back, although it seems to some that’s all they appear to do… not even, it’s just an illusion caused by a lack of interest in their current work. lol!
January 18th, 2009 at 01:56Jeff Beck same metallica will be inducted in “hall of fame”. Beck is a Blackmore contemporaneus. both play mainly fender stratocaster.
January 18th, 2009 at 02:23Maybe for too much marks, DP is absent in “hall of fame”.
yes is a crap
The ‘Hall of Shame’ debacle has been in question for years…
Again, as with Purple’s own actions in the past..(Mainly due to Blackmore snubbing the media), it has in the end ruined their ability to win over the masses. The music business is probably the most political aspect in our existence…..
“If you don’t play the game, you are left out of the Hall of Fame”.
They shot themselves in the foot back in the day when they should have gone out of their way to be more visible, but TMIB sabotaged that with his ‘Shyness’ and elusive behavior. Now, you get what you get.
It really makes no difference to me, one way or the other. I never listened to ‘mainstream music’ anyway. And obviously the majority of Purple fans don’t. We appreciate the quality of certain music and that is what attracts us to Purple. I truly believe that even today, that if they massaged the right people, they would be included fairly soon, but they make it very clear that they are not interested, nor loose any sleep over it. I brought it up with Roger a couple of years ago, and he stated basically that they only look the future, and play music as they see fit. He and Ian Gillan both stated that if they were worried about that type of acceptance, they would have taken a different course regarding their actions and that just wasn’t who they were at the time. Especially when the ‘Leader of the Band’ was such a recluse……
Hey, even my other Fav, Alice Cooper hasn’t been inducted, and he does hob knob with the media….so go figure..
Cheers
January 20th, 2009 at 17:00Burp!!!
January 20th, 2009 at 22:06Bless you……
January 20th, 2009 at 22:16Losers live in the past. Winners learn from the past and enjoy working in the present toward the future
January 21st, 2009 at 11:39into the future with the past!
January 21st, 2009 at 22:27Yup…..Had Purple been as assessable back then as they are today, everything would be different. They learned and now they are ‘worldwide’……I look much more forward to them and their future than I do in hopes of some sort of ‘reunion’. That’s what CDs and Records are for. Miss the old days, crank one up…..
Cheers
January 22nd, 2009 at 16:54Still, even if this MkIII reunion thing remains just a wish, why hasn’t anybody come up with Bill Bruford?
He has been playing professionally since the end of the sixties with Yes and King Crimson.
He knows how to rock in the good old style just like Paice, but he also has that delicate sound, also like Paice. And I rate him higher than almost any drummer I ever heard, who is over 50.
A younger guy will probably not work.
Want to know what Bruford can do?
Listen to Yes: Roundabout, Starship Trooper
Better yet, listen to King Crimson: Starless!!!!!, Larks Tongues In Aspic II, Dinosaur, Red, Exiles or ANY live improvisation they ever did.
And yes, it is a fact that Blackmore CAN NOT improvise, and Bruford, Lord and Hughes CAN.
That has been my dream… Blackmore/Coverdale/Hughes/Lord/Bruford…
January 31st, 2009 at 08:28-Bruford ? Yes, but with the electronic drums then. 😀 But Bruford is “Mr Grumpy” (according to Jon Anderson). Is it wise to have 2 of that kind in one single band ?
-Lord surely is a gentleman. Wish he’d be more gentleman with Nick Simper and Rod Evans in 69, though.
-Mk3 should modernize themselves too: play mk3 songs AND some recent stuff from “Perfect Strangers”, “S and M”, etc… now that would mean they still hungry. And “Dealer”. Come on Ritchie, taste that band !
-My dream line-up is without a doubt : JLT/Simper/Lord/Paice/Blackers (plus a good surgeon to fix what Simp’ and Blackers do to each other)
Enough dreamt…
February 3rd, 2009 at 12:16The Cat teleported himself to a mk3bis concert, in 2013. The setlist is kind of nice. Not the same old boring Machine Head Tour that mk8 does since 2003…
Lots of improvisations and songs linked together:
01.Burn
02.I need love
03.Don’t let go (note: the most Glennhughes-ish DP song since 1975)
04.Might just take your life (note: Blackmore throws a glass of wine at Hughes’ face)
05.Lay down stay down / Nobody’s home (note: same riff)
06.Perfect strangers
07.Sail away / King of dreams / The gypsy / A gyspsy’s kiss
08.Acoustic set:
Soldier of fortune (note: duet with Candice, Blackmore throws a bottle of sake at Coverdale’s naughty bits)
Love don’t mean a thing
Holy man
Love conquers all
Love ain’t no stranger
09.Too much is not enough
10.Mistreated / The purpendicular waltz
11.You fool no one / Silence / Mandrake root pt II
first encore:
12.What’s going on here
13.Stormbringer / Slow down sister (note: same riff)
2nd encore:
14.A 200 / You keep on moving
15.High ball shooter
last encore:
16.Lady luck
17.Going down
Hmmmm… nothing, just dreaming. Ah for those who wonder why there are songs from RoTD, I should be clean: Paicey IS featured.
February 5th, 2009 at 15:23Nice setlist, no ?
Would love to see this they where the best line up of Deep Purple in my book but dont think it will ever happen!
January 29th, 2010 at 09:38I would love to see the mark 3 lineup get together again but I think the best reunion would be blackmore gillen glover lord paice and it should be the superbowl halftime show. tom petty and the stones did a good job but the who this year and the rest of the sp shows sucked. so why do they not request deep purple to do it. think of it the greatest band of all time doing the the biggest show on earth. this past superbowl for now is the most watched progam in the world so I think that would be the ultimate reunion.
