Live in Caesarea
We have received an unconfirmed report that both Israeli gigs on September 7th and 8th at the Hangar 11 in Tel Aviv have been cancelled. Instead, Deep Purple will play a gig on September 7th at a rather unusual venue — Caesarea Amphitheatre. This venue is located on the ruins on an ancient Roman amphitheatre that apparently still serves it’s original purpose. Israeli media also reports that the show will be recorded for a new live DVD and CD.
Did anybody else besides me thought of Live in Pompeii ?
Update (Jul 14): A second gig at the Caesarea Amphitheater has been announced, to take place on September 8.
Thanks to Adar Avisar and Ilya Ferber for the info. Photo: Michael C. Berch, Wikimedia.
This can be very interesting…..”Live in Pompeii”….my thoughts exactly!!Great news!!
July 8th, 2008 at 21:15ahoi.
o.k., chosing this venue forces this comparison upon me.
but PINK FLOYD performed without audience!
how about DP playing “April”, “Shield”, “Anthem”,… without audience, but recorded???
cheers.
July 8th, 2008 at 22:01“Pompeii Calling”. :P:P
July 8th, 2008 at 22:29Live albums by many of Israel’s biggest rock and pop musicians have been recorded at the “amphi” in Caesarea. I’ve never been there for a concert but I have to been the theater as a tourist. I truly envy those who will be there.
July 9th, 2008 at 00:40Very good.
July 9th, 2008 at 07:57Since this is a unique setting, how about a unique set list for a change. I relize certain songs must be played but if you are recording this to be released, give the fans something out of the ordinary. I won’t even bother to make suggestions I’ll leave it up to the band. Besides, there going to play what they want anyway so there’s no point in asking. Just 3 or 4 songs that have never been played before would be awesome. This would make every Purple fan want to buy it!
July 9th, 2008 at 10:44the Venue is on of the nicest in the in the world ! yhose ancient Romans knew how to build theaters and could teach us something about acoustics !
July 9th, 2008 at 13:12the theater is placed on the sea it self and the crowds are facing the sea so that the evening breeze brings the sound with no ampliphication.
as a journalist I joind purple on therr disaster tour in the 90’s in Israel. Blackmore was just about to leave the band and on the sea of Galily concert he refuzed to go on stage ! I know that this concert will be great !!! yet most of the tickets are sold out !
I m happy they canceled Hangar 11 its a very bad place to see a concert in – I recently saw Joe Jackson there and the soud reminded me the sound of an old Tranisistor radio.
anyway – as some wrote here – many of the leading Isareli rock stars recorded live DVDs in the amphi” in Caesarea and most of the came out great.
the funny thing that in the Israeli press there was only one add on friday for the show and most ofthe tickets have been sold.
The song Strange Ways from The House of Blue Light album
July 9th, 2008 at 13:21or the single I’m Alone with long guitar organ duel.
here is a picture of a concert in the theatre http://mad.walla.co.il/archive/168262-5.jpg
July 9th, 2008 at 13:39Or better yet–how about recording a CD of new material live!
July 9th, 2008 at 15:22Up Pompeii ????
Titter ye not!
July 9th, 2008 at 16:03The setting is very reminiscent of the venue I saw Deep Purple play last year just outside Atlanta, Georgia….”The Chastain Amphitheatre”. Beautiful!!!! (Check out my Review, along with pics). Gillan make the remark about playing at a “Tea Party” due to the fact that people are allowd to bring in small tables, ice boxes and their own beverages and food while enjoying the atmostphere and music. Most had bottles of wine and blocks of their favorite cheese and sat back and thoroughly enjoyed the show.
Sure looking forward to their return to the States…..
Cheers
July 9th, 2008 at 16:40Please make a few setlist changes for the recording of this show please!!
July 9th, 2008 at 16:43“Clearly Quite Absurd” would be nice
I believe this truely will be ‘Deep purple in Rock’
July 9th, 2008 at 18:33Another live album?
July 9th, 2008 at 18:53How many live album Deep purple have done in their life?
too many….
I hope this will be only for the Israeli market…
and I hope too Gillan will reach high notes that night.
If Deep Purple wants to record another live dvd I hope they will organize a free concert in the Moscow spaure or at the Colosseum.I would like to se hundreds of thousands people at their show
Deep Purple Live at the Caesarea Amphitheatre.
A historical place need a historical song:
Mr. Gillan, you have to sing: Jesus Christ Superstar ( full titel )… as THE last encore.
… and this on DVD and CD … wonderful …
July 10th, 2008 at 07:22great news!!! I wish purple released a new live dvd every week 🙂 hopefeully it will be shot in hd and released on blue ray as well!!!!!!!!!
hopefully the “floor” will be standing as opposed to seated as shown in the picture from the link above
July 10th, 2008 at 23:25Looks a lot like an amphitheater in Greece they played a show at in 2004. New set list please.
July 11th, 2008 at 00:22It’s a shame that they will play only one night, ticket prices are extreemly high yet the concert is Sold Out. I know many people including myself that have been left out without tickets & are extreemly disapointed that we are going to miss this gig, Gillan first time in the Holy Land & I will not get to see him :((
July 12th, 2008 at 22:36I spoke yesterday with Eyal – One of the band’s friends he told me that the band didn’t talk about changing the set list but if the show will be recorded it is very probable that the set list will be much longer and special. the Caesarea is a fantastic place for a simbolic D.V.D -and it’s about time purple will do something simbolic. Israel takes Gillan as THE VOICE OF ROCK – and he will be very wellcome here – DEEP PURPLE ROCKS !!!
July 13th, 2008 at 14:30Forget about the concert, how about recording a new album there instead. LOL
July 13th, 2008 at 18:31Just been informed, DP have added a second gig at Caesarea Sep-8. Yes Yes Yes……………
July 14th, 2008 at 22:01Caesarea SOLDDDD OUUUUUUUUTTT????

July 15th, 2008 at 06:55How is Sold Out??? There is no sales yet… Tickets have not started to sell yet. Where they were on sale?

What about a gig in Gaza City or Beirut…just for good measure!A perfect opportunity to throw M.A.D. in the set list and rattle the cage a lil´ bit!It could be DP´s contribution to the peace process(wich most likely is a dead duck),and a attempt to make the rabid fundamentalists on both sides to take their heads out of their asses and actually do something sensible!!!
July 18th, 2008 at 18:54How about an open air JLT gig in Baghdad??
July 22nd, 2008 at 14:21George
Also take in account, that there was a huge advertising for Waters show. And to Purple happened something mysterious – it sold before a promotion even started! I think there still a lot of people who would like to get on these shows, but just not aware at all that Purple arrives.
July 22nd, 2008 at 15:30Rascal!
Ha,ha,ha…Not a bad idea! With a little luck he could get the pyroworks for free!!
July 22nd, 2008 at 22:57PurpleElefant
haha, great… Ian Gillan in Jesus Christ Superstar – This is reason why DP is adored so much in Israel and why Ian Gillan is considered to be the voice of Rock music. Israel, this is the holy land, the land of Jesus (and so the land of Ian Gillan (Jesus musically) 🙂
I read somewhere that the band will play song from “Jesus Christ Superstar” musical 🙂
July 23rd, 2008 at 20:13Ouch…..I get that one. He could then join “Great White’s” old guitarist. I know…..that is over the line and insensitive. So “hang me, out to dry”….
Cheers
July 24th, 2008 at 01:02My remark about JLT and Baghad was insensitive, and out of order. I apologise unreseveredly.
The people of Baghdad deserve hope and peace.
What are the gig facilities at Guantanamo Bay like? Good enough for the ‘Spot Light Kid’?
July 24th, 2008 at 08:18Burn the heretic!!!
July 25th, 2008 at 13:38I hope Gillan will do wonderful high screams that night.
July 26th, 2008 at 09:12Now Hope for a Jesus Christ superstar performance!
i send you a link to Deep Purple at channel 10 Isreali news :

July 27th, 2008 at 10:47Sami From Israel
Exciting video, great. though i don’t know hebrew language, I watched the full news. just great 🙂
July 28th, 2008 at 13:57I wish DP to play song from Jesus Christ in Caesarea
Instead of an opening act they could view “Life of Brian”, just to set a positive, warm and delightful mood!!You know….”Jehova,jehova,Jehova”…..!!!!!
July 28th, 2008 at 17:22He’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy
July 29th, 2008 at 08:09third concert to DEEP PURPLE in Israel !!! because of the huge demand DP will have the third concert in Israel at the 9 of september in the Hanger 11 at Tel Aviv.
