Deep Purple + Jon Lord at Sunflower Jam 2008

Jon Lord on stage, September 2002. Photo: Jim Corrigan.

Deep Purple have been added to this years Sunflower Jam in London on September 25 – and for the first time in six years, Jon Lord is set to perform with the band.

On his website, Jon Lord confirms that he will get onstage with Deep Purple as Special Guest:

I imagine they’ll be playing some of the more recent stuff and I’ll join for a few of the old favourites. The idea is not that they’ll turn up without Don Airey at all. That would be terribly unfair to him after all this time.

Last time Jon appeared on stage together with Deep Purple was on September 19, 2002 at the Regent Theatre in Ipswich, UK.

Awesome! If you really want to raise money, record this show and release it as a dvd/cd with all the proceeds going to charity. All purple fans would buy it. I know I would!

  2. 2
    T says:

Very classy that Jon does not usurp the current keyboardist Don Airey.

  3. 3
    Carlos (from Paraguay) says:

Just wonderfull!!!! Please… I want to be there that day!!!

  4. 4
    detpak says:

now if only Ritchie would make an appearance!!

  5. 5
    SEVEN-47 says:

I’d rather see Glenn Hughes make an appearance over Blackmore!

Get a grip, DP doesn’t need blackmore; they just want to have fun.
George is right, we want you to record this show 🙂

    Edmund Haave says:

I’ts not correct that September 19, 2002 was the last time Jon appeared on stage together with Deep Purple. He did it in 2004 in Wembley Arena, London. I know because I was there.

    Bo says:

Roberto you are so 100% right, but just having Jon Lord back for a few songs is a dream. And RB? If that happens – then I dont need to see anymore concerts in my life – except for the “All together” concert.

  11. 11
    Chip says:

Yawn….oh boy another thread on Blackmore gracing us with his presence…woo hoo. I think an all Mandolin version of Hard Lovin Man would be so awesome…..

Whoops I vomited in my mouth….

If only Blackmore had 1/100 of the class Jon Lord does…a reunion would be a good idea. But as it is…Blackmore is just a bitter old man who’s taken his toys and gone off to the faire….

  12. 12
    Andy says:

Although I applaud such a good cause I can’t help thinking that this concert is more geared towards corporate sponsorships than the casual Deep Purple fan. I know I could never afford the limited £300+ tickets and booking a table for 10 at £350 each is pretty much out of my league as well..lets hope they release a DVD of the show.

  13. 13
    Sandra says:

I think it’s great that Deep Purple are still going strong, even if some of the original members aren’t making records with them…so what! Steve Morse is a great guitarist in his own right; Don Airey is a brilliant keyboardist, and with the rest of the good-old guys, you STILL have that awesome Purple-sound. The only difference from 1968 to now is they’re musicians with just the right amount of seasoning…so enjoy the music and be happy for the band members–from my understanding, they’re much happier these days!

  14. 14
    roberto says:

I would love to see mkI and III,Blackmore is only one of the past memebers and not the most important part of this ‘dream’ concert!

  15. 15
    AndreA says:

    Perhaps I ma wrong but
someone thinks that I need to spend 300,350 for seeing Jon Lord & DP together? bad marketing…it makes me astonished and sad…I’d like never read news like this.

DP make the same LZ did some mounth ago:
here they are the same, very poor.

  16. 16
    Altin says:

Wish success to the famous (and best of the time/s) band.
The same to Jon Lord. I wish Richie will be back too.

    Greetings
    Altin

    Andy W says:

I remember the emotion of the night Jon and Don shared the stage in Bradford, on of those moments in time that one never forgets. The maestro handing over the keys to the heir apparent, and yes that little play on words was intentional.

I hope a DVD would be made of the evening, how in this case can it be bad marketing if the money raised is for a good cause? I for one hope that they can increse the ticket price on the back of thyis news for the Sunflower Jam.

    Hat’s off to you guy’s.

  18. 18
    roberto says:

    Sandra,

Deep purpel are heppier these days but I am not.In fact I on’t like so much their last albums and I would see something new returning to the past!
    Deep purple family reunion!

  19. 19
    Patrick says:

THIS BETTER BE ON DVD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. 20
    Wolf Schneider says:

The price of the the tickets is high *precisely* because it is meant to be a charity fundraiser. The fact that Jon is going to play some songs with old friends is simply extra incentive to consider paying the price, rather than the reason for it.

  21. 21
    Andy says:

Surely better to have a venue that can hold a high capacity with a lower ticket price as I can imagine this is a dream for purple fans to see the maestro back on the Hammond. Those sort of ticket prices attract corporate types who really have little interest in the music.

Catch every chance to witness the man live, while it’s still possible…………

i’v seen jon twice so far “my dads seen him countless times” and all i can say WOW i remember me a little boy at the house blues in orlando watchin jon do his famous “rockin the beast”

so n e way im savin up my money 4 this one !

  24. 24
    Roberto says:

    rockin’ the beast???

  25. 25
    purplepriest1965 says:

    Roberto,

Patrick is probably referring to that great one with Jon behind his great piece of furniture , to be seen on YOUTUBE amongst others……………

I think it was from the machine Head DVD?

  26. 26
    Chip says:

Yes the beast is the name given to Jon’s Hammond setup. The Machine Head DVD devotes a great deal of attention to this and Jon demonstrates and plays and shows the inner workings of his hammond set up. It’s fascinating viewing for Purple geeks like us if you haven’t seen it you must get the DVD.

  27. 27
    stefan says:

The Lord IS good…..I totally agree Seven-47,I´d rather see Glenn up there on stage than Ritchie anyday!!He´d probably fuck it up anyway with a tantrum or two!!

  28. 28
    Bernhard says:

I just want to say to Andy (21): I will be at the concert together with my brother in law. We are really big Purple fans and we will be at this event because we love their music. It means a lot for us to pay such a high price, but we do it because music is our life.

  29. 29
    Alan Nortrhwood says:

There are quite a few negative comments about Ritchie on this site. I have followed Purple for many years and quite simply Ritchie was the driving force behind the band. Their albums since his departure are still good but lack a certain quality that RB bought to the music. Such a shame they could not all get along

  30. 30
    Roberto says:

they wil do it one day,
    surely

  31. 31
    Tracy Heyder says:

The Jon Lord guest appearance is a welcome site and in this day and time, with all the “Purple People” out there, whom still live in the “Shadow of Purple”, it would be great to see a variety of them guest from time to time. There isn’t one of them that isn’t in one way or another less valuable than the other regarding their contribution to this huge timeless band. They have all made their Mark and all the Marks are invaluable to the evolution of the present.

Long Live Deep Purple and those who have graced the stage in it’s long and winding road…….to the present and beyond.

    Cheers

    George Kikonishvili says:

    Tracy Heyder,

“purple people who live in the shadow of Deep Purple”????

You know, once Gillan was asked: “Aren’t you bored with the shadow of Deep Purple?”. Big Gillan answered to this question with his genious humour: “No, I’m not bored with the shadow of Deep Purple, but I’m bathed in the sunshine of Deep Purple”…

Absolutely agree…. to me Lord isn’t in the shadow of DP, but he, as well as all DP former and present members are bathed in the sunshine of this great band… 🙂

The Sunflower Jam – Wolf Schneider, i agree…

Regarding this event and the cost of tickets… this event is arranged and has been arranged since 2006 for charity… hence the ticket prices being high. As a DP and music fan i can understand that some of us might not be able to afford tickets that expensive but unlike a normal music show, this event was not all about Deep Purple and Deep Purple fans, it was about a bigger cause… The charity and making money for it! I was lucky enough to be at The Sunflower Jam and i can let you all know that at no point did it have a corporate vibe to it. The event was full of fans and supporters of the charity. It was a very special intimate night and one i will not forget for a long time. I was also talking to people who brought tickets before they even knew who was confirmed to play there!!! I think this tells us that Ian paice’s wife ( jacky ) has started a great live music evening and i hope to go next year too.

    Rici says:

I saw many negative commnets about Ritchie Blackmore the legend of DP. I thing you people don’t now nothing about music!!! RB is great guiarist of all time and for me DP without him are not the same!!!!
