“Just another day at the office…”

In his recent interview to Vintage Rock, Glenn Hughes commented on the California Jam (among many other curious things past and present):

I know the California Jam was one of your first gigs with Purple in the States. What else do you remember about that day?

Just another day at the office to me, I don’t know. The day before, I spent with Tony Iommi and Ozzy doing lines and drinking beer. We were up all night and Sabbath played before us at Cal Jam. I remember flying in on the helicopter with Coverdale, looking down at the audience, and Sabbath were on stage. We flew in there and… I don’t mean to make this sound grandiose, but I knew that show was going to be a great Glenn Hughes moment. I just felt like I was born to play at events like this. I was 22-years-old. I just felt, “You know — I feel real good today. And I’m gonna go out there and I’m gonna give a go.” And you know, I think it was a really good statement and testament.

This line says it all: “I think a lot of my peers are maybe slowing down a bit, maybe doing something a bit different, or just doing their hits. With me, I just want to create brand new music for a vibrant audience.”

I would rather Purple slow down on the touring and put out an album each year on a regular basis.

I just love this man….The sheer joy, childlike enthusiasm, high on life, work ethics, charisma and personality is truly impressive!! He records and tours like nobody else….he must have an energy grenade up his arse!!I´m waiting in anticipation for the release of his latest release….F.U.N.K. and a confirmed Copenhagen gig!!!!

This is typical of glenn hughes. Great musician, great voice, overblown ego. The phrase ‘a great Glenn Hughes moment’ says everything – he’s full of himself, which is why he’s not achieved what he should have done. He was awesome on Cal Jam, when he was kept in check by other band members (for a time), but it all went to his head. Now, when you hear him perform Mistreated for example, it’s all about the rediculous wailing at the end, rather than letting the song do the talking.
And what a stupid title for his new album – I’ll probably still buy it, inspite of everything, but I’m embarrassed by him at times.

I´ve heard “Mistreated” being performed on three different occassions by Glenn Hughes…..Each time in an alternative version! Why should he do it in the same way every time? Personally I love it when he ad libs, one never knows which way the song goes or how it ends!If he performed it the same vein every night, he would probably bore himself and us to pieces! What you call “wailing”….I call improvisation! If don´t like it Reidy….just stay at home and listen to your CD:s, so you can sure of getting the same version each time!!

When I met glenn nov. 2006 after his Copenhagen gig, the last thing that struck me was “EGO”! I´ve met many stars through the years, and I must say Glenn is one of the most kindhearted, down to earth and humble persons I´ve ever met!!! Unlike for example Yngwie Malmsteen…there´s a total asshole for you!! If anyone is full of himself there´s your man! Yes, he´s a great guitarist and showman…as a human being ??…forget it!

I love the the title of his new album….It´s toungue in cheek and sums it up perfectly!! Cheers to ya´ all !!

I do not usually comment about Glenn Hughes because I don’t really like his solo stuff. I admire him and his work but his “soulful” sound is not my cup of tea. Glenns’ work with Trapeze was outstanding and the 3 studio LPs’ with DP simply awesome, but I bought Play Me Out when it came out never liked it so never went back. He is however a part of the DP family so I always wish him the best, but I have the feeling without his exposure in DP he might not be where he is today. I guess he can perform Mistreated anyway he wants but he didn’t write it or sing on the original version and “Yes I will” stay home and listen to my CD’s or LP’s because I like them.

“Play me out” was the last GH solo album you ‘ve heard?!
    You never(…)went back since?

    Wow!

First thing to say is :

That piece of vinyl did get the recommendation once by a Dutch reviewer that it was only suited to melt and use as an ashtray.

That was kinda funny and a bit rude at the same time, I felt way back.

I never really fell in love with album. But I tried anyway.

Play me out absolutely is NOT representaive for the man’s work since then.

If you did like Trapeze you really ought to (have)enjoye(d)many tracks he did put out since 1992.

And inbetween he floored many by guesting as a singer for Gary Moore, Tony Iommi and John Norum.

I once hated GH for “things he did to/in DP” but really got to appreciate him later.

Perhaps a long time ago indeed the “G” on his shirt stood for GOD(I quote Jon Lord)but I never witnessed that kinda ego during and after gigs since 1993.

I liked it when he tried out “Mistreated” even though he did not have much to do with it originally.

But……….I think other DP songs are morte suited to him. Espescially “Gettin’Tighter”, incl the “dance to the rock and roll” section.

On the whole I feel blessed I have been able to witness shows by him in the 90’s which were really outstanding.
