    Robert says:

Well, I wouldn’t go as far as calling him ‘incredible singer’, frankly. He’s ok singer, which best can be described by his own words – “a spotlight kid”. He belongs more to a pop scene rather then r’n’r. Look at his work in Rainbow – sweet voice and way too sugary lyrics. Check the S&M – same stuff. His work with Malmsteen – same stuff!!

And look at his live track-list! I post it entirely (found on this very site) so noone could say I’m exaggerating:

    Street Of Dreams
    Stone Cold
    Death Alley Driver
    Spotlight Kid
    Jealous Lover
    Can’t Happen Here
    King Of Dreams
    Power
    Can’t Let You Go
    Fire In The Basement
    Unfinished Business
    Jack Knife
    I Surrender
    All Night Long
    Long Live Rock’n’ Roll
    Burn
    Highway Star
    Smoke On The Water
    Arianna

19 songs, of which only 3 (three) do not belong to Rainbow or DP (thanks God I haven’t heard him singing Burn…). That gives a good idea of how he objectively rank himself! To me it’s a clear indication that the guy is simply afraid of performing his own material ’cause he knows that otherwise he’d be singing to an empty hall. I also don’t think that being an official member of DP for 1 year/1 album gives him decent right to perform songs to which he has no connection whatsoever (I mean songs from Machine Head and Burn). Is he an average pub cover-band or what?

Just to put things straight – I don’t hate JLT (why should I?) and I really think he’s not so bad a singer, but I just don’t like how he blares around how great he is at the same time exploiting DP/Rainbow legacy to earn money.

    Mark Bee says:

Is it true Joe’s real name is “Irving Boskowitz?”

  10. 10
    purplepriest1965 says:

It appears to me that JLT evokes more aversion than Steve Morse………..

    It’s all very subjective……….

I like LJT very much and dislike the sound of Steve.
    So it,s 1-1???
I don’t agree that JLT is only an popsinger. Odyssey was very heavy. Listen only to the title track, it’s way heavier than nowadays DP……………I loved from the opening on(that drums, like played in a big hangar, yeah!)and still do, almost 20 years later.

I agree that not all of his work is that strong and that he needs someone like RB or Nikolo Kotcheff (Love those Brazen Abbot albums)for compositionstrenght.
Although I love Rainbow with Dio more and I dislike Slaves and Masters a lot(except some great tracks)I can enjoy him in everything he does. Well, almost, hehehe. Hurry up and wait was terrible, for example………….

  11. 11
    Mark Bryant says:

Okay, like all DP singers, JLT had some “not so great” songs. But, all-iin-all, I like Slaves and Masters with JLT as singer and his work with Rainbow was pretty darn good. I think most DP fans dislike him because of the off-handed manner in which IG was let go after HOBL: how arrogant JLT was when he was “given” the gig and; how poorly he represented himself on stage. Any singer who comes into DP and is expected to sing IG songs is set up for failure. Could you imagine IG singing DC/GH songs? No. Or RB playing guitar on TB songs? No. Like is mostly the case, JLT songs on S&M worked well on stage. So, give the guy a break. He is a member of the family lineage (whether through Rainbow or DP) and each of us can either buy his stuff or not. I like his voice. I may not like him personally, but I like his voice.

  12. 12
    heycisco says:

Finally a voice of reason! I couldn’t agree more Mark. Cheers!

  13. 13
    Cranberry says:

Maybe Ive been giving JLT a bad deal!!

Maybe I should re-assess my opinions. Maybe I should embrace pop rock, pvc, and lycra, But frankly I find it difficult!!

Some stuff he did with Rainbow was good……….I have to admit.

‘Slaves and Masters’ on the other hand was Rainbow in disguise, but without any memorable tracks. Appalling!!

As to what JLT has done since then……………anything memorable??? anything substantial? anything at all?

Seems to me the guy’s career these days is created on the back of DP. Why?

But as stated above, JLT is part of the DP family.

I Like to think of him as a ‘5th cousin twice removed’, you know, that part of the family we all try to forget……………..Bad Blood!!

  14. 14
    Sami says:

    Hi!

Well, what can I say…JLT raises some strong opinions here, so he must be
doing something right…He is A Great Singer!!!

5th cousin(cranberry or blueberry or whatever his name is, again!), or “exploitin’ Rainbow/DP-legacy”…don’t be ridiculous :
how about Paul Rodgers “exploiting” Free/Bad Company/Queen-legacy…
Meat Loaf “exploiting” Jim Steinman-legacy…John Sykes etc. “exploiting”
Lizzy-legacy…Sammy Hagar “exploiting” Van Halen-legacy…and so on and so on and so on…current Dixie Purple(with One original member left) playing new songs to an audience who only wake up when it’s time for the classic Blackmore-riffs/songs!!!

Second Hand Life is A Great JLT-album, you won’t be wasting your money!!

  15. 15
    Sami says:

After all, it’s only a matter of one’s personal taste…so lets drop this JLT vs. whoever-topic ,and have a nice holiday with some great Purple-music!!

Cheers from Finland(that’s my excuse, Cranberry…)!

  16. 16
    purplepriest1965 says:

What JLT did after DP? (Becoming a questionable one after seeing some adult clips on the net, lately, hehehe. Yeah, I know, I am late to notice………..Finally I left my innocence behind. Well………….)
You can also question the quality of what RB did in BN or the annoying Morse solo’s or the sometime questionable output of Mark 2(…)during reunionyears.
I can easily collect a double disc or more worth of great tracks he recorded SOLO or with Brazen Abbot……….

Btw, I went to see “Queen “with Paul Rodgers. That very bad. During the COMPLETE show a tape was rolling with Freddy’s vocals as back up!!!!!!!!!! And nobody seemed to cared!!!!

The best memory of that evening : a wonderful attractive young girl with appleblossomscent in her long hair beside me…………..

  17. 17
    T says:

Frankly, I never understood the Slaves & Masters bruha. It was one of the best DP Reunion-Era albums, and far better than its successor–or predecessor. It is what it is. Just another shade of Deep Purple.

No two DP albums sound the same, and it carried on in that tradition. It contains some of the best guitar work Blackmore had ever done (“Cut Runs Deep,” “Fire in the Basement”), and included a high degree of sophistication from Jon Lord. It was also one of the best produced of the modern DP albums.

Go back and listen to it. If you just don’t like JLT, that’s fine–but listen to the instrumental work. I will admit it does sound like a Rainbow album, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

This album is much like “Burn” in that it gave Blackmore a renewed sense of enthusiasm that “House of Blue Light” lacked. The S&M songs were well-written (for the most part).

I would love to hear the “Battle Rages On” tracks with the JLT vocals. They must exist somewhere.

  18. 18
    Cranberry says:

As I said JLT did a reasonable job singing with rainbow. As to ‘purplepriest1965’ double disc solo collection of great tracks……………..well if thats the case why does JLT prefer to pilfer DP songs?? Why doesnt he dip into his ‘great solo tracks’??

If think its perfectly acceptable for him to sing songs from the dreary ‘Slaves & Masters’ effort………………..he is welcome to them!!

Unless of course JLT does a solo ablum based on entirely what he does best………………..thats it!! JLT sings Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Whitesnake…………….he could even sing the Spice Girls!! He may as well!!

‘Second Hand LIfe’ is another compilation of tracks that will have a brief airing, but ultimately dropped in favor of ‘Smoke On The Water’, Highway Star, Burn’……………………….you know……….all those great classic JLT songs!!

    Ha Ha

  19. 19
    Rascal says:

Sounds like JLT prefers to perform with his DP tribute band in favour of singing his own work.

Mind you if you want to fill your tour to capacity I guess you have to sing stuff people have at least heard. Is that called making a ‘Fast Buck’?

I would sing SOTW if I thought it was contributing to my pension.

  20. 20
    Sami says:

Thank You PurplePriest1965 & T!You said like it is!!

As for the brief airing of new songs in a live setting : what about Deep Dregs’s new songs!?How many songs from House of Blue Light,Cattle Crazes on,Purpendicular,Abandon & Bananas are still
in the live set…from Rapture there is a few…and only a few people in the audience know those songs, so what’s the point!?Oh, the ever present ‘progress’ is there, I see…
    ARF ARF ARF…
What ’bout Coverdale ruining Whitesnake by hiring faceless American stadium-musicians to play all those great blues-based old Snake-songs!?I guess it’s okay, because he’s not an American like JLT is…or is he!!?ARF ARF

Hey Strawberry, grow up, JLT did happen, like it or not!!!

  21. 21
    Sami says:

By the way, what’s wrong with playing a few Purple songs live for the fun
of it…even if he did not sing them originally…it’s called FUN, something you
nihilists don’t know, I suspect(why not get a life of your own)!!

  22. 22
    Sami says:

    What’s Gillan doing singing Hush…he didn’t sing it originally…OH, I’M SO
    APPALLED & SHOCKED!!!

    ARF ARF ARF ARF ARF…

  23. 23
    Sami says:

Sorry everybody(you too cranberry), I’m getting too heated…

I would like to compare Slaves and Masters to the Sabbath’s Born Again-period…
neither one was quite succesfull & fan pleasing, but both still
raise comments and both of them still has admirers!!

By the way, I love Gillan and nowadays he’s better then ever, but
JLT is one of my all time favourite singers, so…

    ‘Nuff said, end.

  24. 24
    Cranberry says:

Thanks ‘Pami’…….. I think your right, we have reached the end of this discussion.

You seem far to stressed to continue……………….until the next time!!

    Arf Arf Arf (?????????)

  25. 25
    Rascal says:

What a shame we had to end it here………………..

JLT for King (or should that be Queen)!!!

  26. 26
    purplepriest1965 says:

    Hey Cranberry………..

Why JLT does not play other tracks than he does.
It appears to me the same reason DP does not play the Morse era songs. The crowd is not interested in those tracks.
You have a problem with JLT sining non JLT traclks as Burn, Highwaystar and so on ? So you must really hate Morse doing doing Blackmore songs.

stressed out, not at all, just tired of narrow-minded &
immature kids who can’t get their heads out of their asses!!!

Until next time, and thanks PurplePriest1965 & the rest of
the ‘JLT-gang’, who understand the meaning of these discussion
forums, or whatever they are called.

  30. 30
    Cranberry says:

Keep taking the medication ‘Tami’……..get those stress levels down!!

If JLT wants to sing in a DP tribute band…………good for him!!

    Now calm down ladies!!

  31. 31
    Sami says:

DP tribute band…oh, you mean the current Deep Dregs band, Miss Berry!!

No need for a medication, no stress either, just having a laugh, mate.

    Bye…

  32. 32
    Sami says:

    Cranberries tribute band anyone!?

  33. 33
    purplepriest1965 says:

    How funny!
Here I am being thanked for supporting JLT, on other pages I am almost crucified for doing the opposite with Steve Morse…….
    Arf Arf Arf?

Btw, I want to see JLT LIVE in The Netherlands. Alone or togwether with Graham Bonnet. Let’s start a supportaction for that combined with a setlistpoll WHAT he should play. Btw, I advocate that he(indeed)should not play too many DP covers, only those of S and M.

    Kind Regards “Endlessly” ……..

  34. 34
    cranberry says:

How kind of you to use my correct title ‘Miss’……………..how did you know?

Just dont get so cut about JLT. Take a pill, and have a rest, stop getting your knickers in such a twist!!

JLT is just so fantastic…………………their you go ‘Gami’, has that calmed you down a little? …………….NO……….oh dear……….have a lie down in a darkened room………..and think of his godliness JLT

  35. 35
    Rascal says:

Lets have a JLT for president poll………………..anyone????

Lets take all his CD’s melt them down, and mould a huge statue of JLT.

  36. 36
    purplepriest1965 says:

I’d rather ask people for their favourite JLT tracks, spawning from fandango and Rainbow to Malmsteen, DP and SOLO and Brazen Abbot………..
It would be very digfficult for me, but a man can try while he’s not going to sleep yet :

    Fandango :

    Blame it on the night

    RAINBOW :

    1) Tearing out my heart or the rendtion from Live between the eyes
    2) Jealous lover
    3) can’t let you go
    4)Firedance
    5) Street of dreams
    6) Eyes of fire
    7) Miss Mistreated
    8) StoneCold
    9) I Surrender
    10) magic
    11) Spotlight Kid
    12) Street of dreams
    13) Desperate heart
    14) No release
    LIVE :
    15) Stranded and All night long from 12 inch single (I want the complete double album from that evening! Now!)

    Rising force/Malmsteen :

    1) Rising force
    2) Dreaming
    3) Deja Vu
    4) Heaven tonight
    5) Crystal Ball
    6) Riot in the Dungeons
    7) lazy
    8) Pictures of home
    9) Demon’s Eye

    Deep Purple :

    1) king of dreams
    2) the cut runs deep
    3) fire in the basement
    4) Truth Hurts

I’ll get back to ya for a selection from Brazen Abbot, DP New York, SOLO, Hughes/Turner………

  37. 37
    Sami says:

Great choices, I would add Wicked Ways to DP-tracks…

    Cheers, man.

  38. 38
    Sami says:

The acoustic version of King of Dreams with
    Roger Glover is Excellent also!!

  39. 39
    purplepriest1965 says:

I’m sorry not to have finished my list yet, it’s kinda hard to choose……….

In general the SOLO efforts(Apart from “Rescue You”, which I can play non stop)I find lacking in compositional strenght and, like I said before somewhere, lack a Mister B or Kotcheff. But still I could make a wonderful compilation of those albums……

It’s kinda funny : A lot of people say he’s not a rocksinger, but I like the FAST songs with him very much!

Anyone going to see Brazen Abbot in Bulgaria?
    WITH JLT!!!!
I’d love to see it, but economic discipline has decided that I am not allowed to go. Sob sob…..

  40. 40
    purplepriest1965 says:

Did I already mention that those 2 Hughes/Turner albums are REAL GEMS?
    I play them to death.
Because it’s a 2 man operation it’s hard to pick Turner classics from it. I suppose because hughes is the MAN on these albums?

  41. 41
    Sami says:

You’re absolutely right…JLT is really good on harder tracks nowadays; his
voice has matured alot with age, adding new kind of (bluesy)depth to his style.

YES, Hughes/Turner albums are real gems…they truly rock!!!

  42. 42
    Olivia says:

I agree that Joe Lynn Turner is a great singer. One of the songs from the time when he was with Deep Purple, “Fire, Ice and Dynamite” is a very good one and would have been a great addition to the album. His voice is brilliant and Ritchie Blackmore was instrumental in getting Joe in to first replace the wonderful Graham Bonnet in Rainbow and then subsequently to be the replacement in 1989 of Ian Gillan in Deep Purple, when Ian left following the reunion studio albums and live “Nobody’s Perfect”. Ritchie also very highly rates the “Street of Dreams” vocals by Joe. Please see “Black Knight: Ritchie Blackmore” by Jerry Bloom – page 263 paragraph 2.
