Gillan with orchestra in Greece
Caramba reports that Ian Gillan has signed up to do a concert in Thessaloniki, Greece on Saturday 30th June (although the orchestra’s site says June 29th) with the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.
The venue is an open-air theatre called Theatro Gis. It seats 4.500 and is at a beautiful spot in the north part of the city.
Ian will be singing to orchestral arrangements (by Friedemann Riehle) of the following songs:
Highway Star, Fireball, Smoke on the Water, Black Night, When a Blind Man Cries, Ted the Mechanic, Strange Kinda Woman, Perfect Strangers
Caramba promises more info on their site as soon as they get it.
How interesting! Only 2 Morse songs out of 8, but otherwise great. Let’s hope it’s filmed. By the way, Gis, the name of the theatre, means Earth, as in Earth Theatre.
May 25th, 2007 at 05:40I see only 1 Morse song (TED)
May 25th, 2007 at 10:10Yeah right, rob! But none of the less I`m hoping, that the concert will be published. Sounds interesting. If not, I suggest the Official Bootleg Record “Live at Rotterdam Ahoy”, where you can find most of the songs with orchestra in good quality – of course on the 1999 “Concerto…” as well…
May 25th, 2007 at 10:29Yes but here it looks like Gillan will be singing ONLY with a orchestra with no guitars like Joe Lynn Turner did in Japan a couple of months ago.
May 25th, 2007 at 11:34been watching purple blogs we need richie back.

May 25th, 2007 at 22:02Nice idea. The results would be interesting. I hope they record it. Could be great.
May 26th, 2007 at 13:13Well, Steve, could be great the returning of Ritchie. Steve is good, but…
Sounds great that!, I think that Sometimes I feel Like Scream should be added to the setlist.
I like Ritchie Blackmore, but since there’s Steve Morse, I don’t miss him.
May 26th, 2007 at 19:52Ritchie back – YES please!!!
May 26th, 2007 at 20:49Purple today has lost surprises and magic. Yes they are happy now which is VERY important, but for my selfish ego I would love RB & JL back.
Just play the DVDs. The newer one just dont have the magic like the older ones.
I might be wrong, but it’s just the way I feel.
Ian In Greece:
May 28th, 2007 at 12:49Ian Loves Greece and Greece loves Ian:
I can bet you my good friend Stathis Panagiotakis and Michalkis Raknstis will be there:
Ian with an orchestra?
Well Pavaroti said Ian was one of the best singer he has ever heard and that is why he invited him and Deep Purple to play with him:
I have a CD of DP music by an Russian orchestra and it is awesome!
Ian can you get me 2 tickets and I will fly to Greece to see it like I did when you played in Cyprus a few years ago!
You truly have a beautiful voice and I know it will be a night to remember:
cheers Chris Andrews
PS The set list? Fantastic! The only song I would add would be “Getaway”.
Out of tune plumber spring to mind?????
June 1st, 2007 at 12:30Just fantastic!!! Incredible!!!!
June 3rd, 2007 at 11:26This might just be the most perfect birthday present I will ever have!!
We have already planned a vacation to Greece during my birthday.
Now this will hopefully coincide with Gillans show in Thessaloniki!
I hope these news will be confirmed soon so that we might change flights!
Such a nice idea spoiled by such a boring setlist… It was not long ago when DP was still able to surpise us, in year 2000, with the orchestra. Ian Gillan will finish his life playing “Smoke…” in supermarkets to promote a shower soap or DVD players (no disrespect for supermarkets though 🙂 ).
June 8th, 2007 at 11:47Igrew up loving Deep Purple at the age around 4 my sister & I heared all the songs on Am radio in BiG Betsy old Tank of a car, Smoke on the water,My woman from tokyo,Hush&Highwaystar Are Exceptional songs that made me love Deep Purple With Passion.Exceptional vocalists-Unc’s Ian Gillan, David Coverdale(Later), Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow/Solo/Elf/Sabbath) & very underrated vocalsist Glenn Hughes as well as Excptional Bassist.
