I wanted to take a moment to post a review of this particular show because I was very pleasantly surprised.
I’ll get tickets to see Purple anytime I can but I’ll confess their performance at Artpark in 2016 in Lewinston (Buffalo) and the following year with Alice Cooper at Toronto’s Molson Amphitheater where less than stellar.
I’m not a huge Judas Priest fan at all but yesterday’s double bill was interesting so I absolutely wanted to go.
The opening act was fine. Little bit of a UK version of a poor man’s Black Crowes. Judas Priest followed and played a great first set with a replacement guitarist. I apologize for not looking him up. After a very short minute break following mostly new songs, KK and Glen come out and we have a 3 guitarists on stage. Very cool. They play a bunch of hits and a lot of props to the whole band. It was a great split set AND a very classy move. Rare are the shows that make me want to go pick up the new record.
I commented to my buddy that Purple would face a very uphill battle to follow that 1:20h long set by Priest. It took a long 30 minutes to break up the JP set and place the minimalist stage set for Purple. The first things that I noticed was that Paicey and Don were side by side in the middle, instead of Don of to the right corner
Anyway, Purple came on, the sound quality in Hamilton is always amazing and Purple was amazingly TIGHT, loud and stuck to the HITS. It was an amazing set all around starting with the best live version of Highway Star in years. Followed by Pictures of Home, Strange Kind of Woman and more and more and more and more hits. The version of Uncommon Man was good and the highlight was Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
I don’t mean to ramble but this was the best Purple show I’ve seen since the Purpendicular and Abondan shows. Compared to Casino Rama (North of Toronto), ArtPark in Lewinston (Buffalo) and the recent tour with Alice Cooper in Toronto itself, this show was AMAZING. It was a very tight band firing on all cylinders last night!
And the band genuinely seemed to enjoy themselves. Roger was very expressive. Steve was all smiles.
Just a great evening!!! So happy I went!
Much respect to Judas Priest and MUCH LOVE to Deep Purple!
