I was sorely disappointed with the Atlanta show. I couldn’t tell if it was the humidity, or old age, or both, but Ian Gillan was really struggling to get the lyrics out. He had this pained expression on his face and seemed to be huffing and puffing around the stage. The Atlanta Journal review said he had a “course warble” and I couldn’t come up with a better description. Steve Morse was a trooper trying to fill in the gaps, but it wasn’t enough. Good news was that the crowd was pretty enthusiastic and there wasn’t the mass exodus after Alice Cooper that other people have pointed out at other shows. I consider myself an Ian Gillan completest (ever since hearing Jesus Christ Superstar in my younger years) so I really don’t know what to think about what I’ve witnessed and what I’ve heard about recent performances. The vocals on “Infinite” aren’t that bad by a stretch (it’s a damn good album), so hopefully this is just a bump in the road…
