I saw them yesterday in Wiesbaden – before a group of 150 people maybe (bitter when you think how he played before 250,000 people at the Cal Jam 40 years ago fame and success is fickle …). Glenn sang well and his propulsive bass playing just keeps getting better and better/reckless (or more over the top, depending on your view!).
But my nagging observation is: Young Andrew, the guitarist, is charming and energetic, but his solo style is totally non-descript. There wasn’t a single note he played that made me perk my ears. Yes, he’s young and maybe a giant in another 10 years, but at this point he is simply not anywhere near the league of Ritchie Blackmore, Tommy Bolin, Pat Thrall, Gary Moore, Tony Iommi and Joe Bonamassa or even Mel Galley and JJ Marsh. California Breed is operating on two (the drummer is fine) rather than three cylinders – that is an issue for a power trio. Glenn is underselling himself IMHO. I wish he would finally operate in a band with musicians of his own league. On a continuous basis, but we all know Glenn …
