Concerto for Group and Orchestra, Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th September 1999

What an outstanding experience I have just gone through.

Two renditions of a fascinating combination of classical and rock performances fused into one vibrant and electrifying performance. For me Sunday was much more relaxed and fluid after the tension and focus of the event on Saturday and all the concentrated energy returning after 30 years.

The whole evening, both times, made my hair stand on end. I was very impressed by the way in which the programme was put together. The flow from classical (a great tribute to Malcom Arnold) through various shades of Rock with all conceivable elements woven through it to the highlight of Group and Orchestra finishing with Deep Purple augmented by the LSO on top form was wonderful.

I'll stay away from too much hyperbole but let me add that beyond anything else two things will stay with me, firstly the astounding difference between the interest and enjoyment of the LSO now and the LPO 30 years ago (big difference in background and expectation of the musicians I am sure), but secondly the sheer fun the band was having with the music and with other. If by no-one else, this was exemplified by Steve Morse who, whilst completely focussed whilst playing, was clearly having a whale of a time and showed it by being the most relaxed a performer I've scene at a performance and smiling from ear to ear whenever he felt the moment - and that was frequently.

It is great to see the classic line up back and enjoying their music and, no discredit to Richie, Steve has brought the band new life and new spirit.

Stay with it guys your fans are with you, as I'm sure you gathered from last weekend.

Long live rock 'n roll (as Richie might have said later...).
