Paicey in Modern Drummer Hall of Fame
Every year since 1979 the Modern Drummer magazine conducts a readers poll and awards distinguished drummers in several categories based on the results. The most prestigious category is Hall of Fame, with one drummer being inducted every year. And while the official results of the 2015 readers poll do not seem to be out, Pearl Drums blew the whistle and announced that this year the inductee will be none other than our own Ian Paice. He will be in the company of his heroes Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich, who were inducted in 1979 and 1980 respectively.
Our congratulations with the well deserved honour!

On a separate note I agree with Scott W #2. Brian Downey is one of the finest drummers in Hard Rock history but we rarely hear that from fans and the press in general.

April 14th, 2015 at 00:25Weird how I was introduced to Drumming as a young boy by my next door neighbor ‘Frankie Rodriguez’ whom was a few years older than me. He was a legend in my old neighborhood due to his ability on the kit. He played in a couple of local bands and also was a hired gun in a semi-successful band called “The Byrds”. I used to hang out and watch him practice. He had his drums set up in his bedroom in his parent’s house. He would allow me to sit on his thrown and give it a go from time to time. I actually impressed him and he begged my dad to buy me a drum set. He said I was a natural and had the potential to be one of the best. I never got that drum set. He even gave me permission to come over to his house and play his drums anytime I wanted to, whether he was home or not. He told his Mom to just let me in if I showed up. I took him up on that and that is where I got my schooling. Self taught with some great input from this amazing player.
Now to make this story relevant to this subject…. Frankie’s main influences and drum heroes were none other than Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich. I remember later on when I discovered Deep Purple and realizing the drumming talent of Mr. Ian Paice. He blew me away and I expressed to Frankie how much he reminded me of his playing. When he finally heard some of Deep Purple’s music and Paicey doing what he does, he was blown away and stated how much he reminded him of Kruppa and Rich but with a Bombastic Rock Feel.
Many years later and just a few years ago, I had the luxury of Ian Paice signing my ‘Ian Paice Signature Snare Drum Head’. He wrote: “To Tracy….Thanks for doing what I do”. How profound and amazing to have such an item in my possession. When I read what he wrote, I told him…. “Mr. Paice, I can’t even come close to doing what you do, but I can say you are the model I have chosen to emulate as much as possible”. Unfortunately, I chose way too high of a role model. I disappoint myself all the time…… 😉
Ch-BeerZ to you Ian Paice for being such an inspiration and presence in my life and for getting the long overdue recognition you most certainly deserve.
In all actuality, Paicey surpassed his heroes in his own talented way and should go down as this eras Greatest Drummer.
I am so pumped knowing that I get yet another chance to witness the genius on the kit again on August 2nd in Nashville at the Ryman Theater. The LORD ALL MIGHTY has truly Blessed me.

Congrats to Paicey, I’ m surprised he wasn’t in The Hall already. I totally agree with a few of the post’s giving Brian Downey an honorable mention!!! Whatever Brian played, just sounded like thats the way it was supposed to be played. Also , I agree with Lee Kerslake getting some recognition. I remember that i tought at the moment “This rumours are bullshit…but if there´s ever a chance to see a Purple line-up without Paice, It´s Brian Downey THE one who should be sitting at his kit”. I can´t think of other drumer who has the fluency and dexterity to aproach something like..Burn. Everytime i hear a cover of Burn, it´s usually lacking on the drum department

Oddly enough, mine too. This gives total sentiment to my wishes the Gary Moore would have been chosen to replace TMIB in Purple. Not complaining at all about Morse getting the gig but, Gary was (and still is) one of the greatest guitarists of all time and I feel his playing style would have been more suited for Purple yet interjecting his well recognized style to the fold. Don Airey is here playing too which there you have 3 thirds of a Gary infused Purple line-up. With Gillan and Glover added…… a masterful DEEP PURPLE. I can hear it now……. OK, back to the present which is Just Fine and Friggin’ Dandy. 😉

Gary Moore was special. But he was a restless kind of guy, never stayed in a band or kept a lineup of his own going for very long. He knew his own weakness as well – overplaying – and was candid about it in a lovely, very affectionate BBC radio documentary he made about Rory Gallagher. I still rate his Back on the Streets album up there with the best, with some of Don’s finest playing. But I don’t think he would even have considered playing in a band like Purple at that stage in his career where 75% at least of what he played every night would be other people’s – specifically Ritchie’s – stuff.
