Paicey in Modern Drummer Hall of Fame
Every year since 1979 the Modern Drummer magazine conducts a readers poll and awards distinguished drummers in several categories based on the results. The most prestigious category is Hall of Fame, with one drummer being inducted every year. And while the official results of the 2015 readers poll do not seem to be out, Pearl Drums blew the whistle and announced that this year the inductee will be none other than our own Ian Paice. He will be in the company of his heroes Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich, who were inducted in 1979 and 1980 respectively.
Our congratulations with the well deserved honour!
Thanks to Alan Greene for the info.
Well,finally!!!
April 13th, 2015 at 16:01Great! My fave drummer (being one myself) along with Cozy. One who needs more recognition is Brian Downey of Thin Lizzy. Brian is powerful, funky and consistent like our Paicey!
April 13th, 2015 at 16:05Better now than never… Paicey Rules!
April 13th, 2015 at 16:06About time Ian Paice is on of the best drummers in hard rock history
April 13th, 2015 at 16:11About DAM time!
April 13th, 2015 at 16:23Hate to say it…but about bloody time. Well done Paicey…
April 13th, 2015 at 16:29I just finished watching Paicey doing his famous drum solo before I read this article. This performance is enough to get him inducted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSrTrKFpAYE
April 13th, 2015 at 16:30yeahhhhhhh! Ian is the best!
April 13th, 2015 at 16:43About bloody time! Long overdue and still a living legend.
April 13th, 2015 at 16:44This is not Made in Japan, it’s a live in Denmark or northern Europe 🙂 Anyway….they’re fantastic!!!!!
April 13th, 2015 at 16:44Brilliant my fav drummer!
April 13th, 2015 at 16:48Love this Rickembecker sound… 🙂
April 13th, 2015 at 16:52Bravo Paicey!
April 13th, 2015 at 18:08He realy deserves it!
This is good news, first the cover of “Long Beach 1971” and now the drummers Hall of Fame.
About time and well deserved. Congratulations.
April 13th, 2015 at 18:40Congrats to Ian Paice ! For sure one of the best drummers in history !! I had the chance to watch one of his drum clinics in 1999 and he REALLY knows how to play the drums !
On a separate note I agree with Scott W #2. Brian Downey is one of the finest drummers in Hard Rock history but we rarely hear that from fans and the press in general.
April 13th, 2015 at 19:41The greatest…just like BonhamPowell,Kerslake etc..you can tell who’s playing on the record after few seconds. That’s not the case with all these heavy metal drummers of today…they all sound the same.
April 13th, 2015 at 20:04Many congratulations and well deserved, echo the sentiment about it being well overdue!
April 13th, 2015 at 20:05My héro ! Congratulations Mister Speed King !
April 13th, 2015 at 21:00Congratulations!
late… but not too late!
Paice is able to “read” a song and makes it special and unique.
I think he once said to Glenn Hughes: “By the way, I’m not following, I am leading…”
Have a nice Day!
April 13th, 2015 at 21:58He also won rock drummer of the year (:
April 13th, 2015 at 22:07Righteous acknowledgement by his peers!
April 13th, 2015 at 22:18About damn time!! Way to go Ian! He could swing, he could play heavy, the way he pushed the band during their instrumentals will never be beaten!!
April 13th, 2015 at 23:26Congrads too Paicey. Long Over Do.
April 13th, 2015 at 23:56Nobody compares to Iannnnnnnnnn Paiceeeeeeeeeee!!!

April 14th, 2015 at 00:25Weird how I was introduced to Drumming as a young boy by my next door neighbor ‘Frankie Rodriguez’ whom was a few years older than me. He was a legend in my old neighborhood due to his ability on the kit. He played in a couple of local bands and also was a hired gun in a semi-successful band called “The Byrds”. I used to hang out and watch him practice. He had his drums set up in his bedroom in his parent’s house. He would allow me to sit on his thrown and give it a go from time to time. I actually impressed him and he begged my dad to buy me a drum set. He said I was a natural and had the potential to be one of the best. I never got that drum set. He even gave me permission to come over to his house and play his drums anytime I wanted to, whether he was home or not. He told his Mom to just let me in if I showed up. I took him up on that and that is where I got my schooling. Self taught with some great input from this amazing player.
Now to make this story relevant to this subject…. Frankie’s main influences and drum heroes were none other than Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich. I remember later on when I discovered Deep Purple and realizing the drumming talent of Mr. Ian Paice. He blew me away and I expressed to Frankie how much he reminded me of his playing. When he finally heard some of Deep Purple’s music and Paicey doing what he does, he was blown away and stated how much he reminded him of Kruppa and Rich but with a Bombastic Rock Feel.
Many years later and just a few years ago, I had the luxury of Ian Paice signing my ‘Ian Paice Signature Snare Drum Head’. He wrote: “To Tracy….Thanks for doing what I do”. How profound and amazing to have such an item in my possession. When I read what he wrote, I told him…. “Mr. Paice, I can’t even come close to doing what you do, but I can say you are the model I have chosen to emulate as much as possible”. Unfortunately, I chose way too high of a role model. I disappoint myself all the time…… 😉
Ch-BeerZ to you Ian Paice for being such an inspiration and presence in my life and for getting the long overdue recognition you most certainly deserve.
In all actuality, Paicey surpassed his heroes in his own talented way and should go down as this eras Greatest Drummer.
I am so pumped knowing that I get yet another chance to witness the genius on the kit again on August 2nd in Nashville at the Ryman Theater. The LORD ALL MIGHTY has truly Blessed me.
April 14th, 2015 at 01:55simply the best. Congratulacions.
April 14th, 2015 at 02:26True legend, no one does it like Paicey IMHO
I have had the pleasure of meeting Ian twice after concerts in Aalborg and Copenhagen,
April 14th, 2015 at 06:05just the nicest bloke you’d ever meet !
Congrats to Paicey, I’ m surprised he wasn’t in The Hall already. I totally agree with a few of the post’s giving Brian Downey an honorable mention!!! Whatever Brian played, just sounded like thats the way it was supposed to be played. Also , I agree with Lee Kerslake getting some recognition. Denny Carmazzi another of my favorite drummers Good to see Paicey still playing well Will be at the show in Lynn Auditorium Cant wait
April 14th, 2015 at 10:09About time!!! Congrats Ian
April 14th, 2015 at 10:22Best drummer in the world!
April 14th, 2015 at 12:00Well at least one member makes it into ‘the Hall’! Well deserved of course & good to see!
April 14th, 2015 at 21:16byron @16 – I agree totally with your comment, excellent to see & so true! Cheers.
Congrats to Ian Paice …true professional if there ever was one!! Hey Tracy….just got my tickets in the mail yesterday, will be looking for you from the balcony 🙂 Can’t wait?!
April 14th, 2015 at 22:24I´ve always loved Thin Lizzy and tought Brian Downey was VERY underrated. It´s very conforting to see i´m not alone on that tought.
April 15th, 2015 at 01:17Do you guys remember those stupid rumours about an MKIII reunion with Lars Ulrich on drums? I remember that i tought at the moment “This rumours are bullshit…but if there´s ever a chance to see a Purple line-up without Paice, It´s Brian Downey THE one who should be sitting at his kit”. I can´t think of other drumer who has the fluency and dexterity to aproach something like..Burn. Everytime i hear a cover of Burn, it´s usually lacking on the drum department
Excellent, Congratulations, Mr. Paice…see you in July at the Lynn Auditorium!
April 15th, 2015 at 02:58Nice!
April 15th, 2015 at 05:39long overdue … very long overdue. congrats, paicey!
April 15th, 2015 at 08:30Funnily enough my favourite Paice clip isn’t with Purple, but Gary Moore;

April 17th, 2015 at 03:19Classic band. Classic drummer. I get to see them at the classic Ryman Auditorium on 8-2 with a VIP ticket. Can’t wait!!!!@@
April 17th, 2015 at 15:51Coronarias @ 39- I have watched this clip before, it sounds like a Colosseum 2 track, well at least it reminds of that wonderful ‘progressive’ band! Cheers.
April 17th, 2015 at 23:26Congratulations Mr Paice. Long overdue and like Scott W. #2 I agree Brian Downey also merits inclusion.
April 18th, 2015 at 02:32Coronarias @ 39:
Oddly enough, mine too. This gives total sentiment to my wishes the Gary Moore would have been chosen to replace TMIB in Purple. Not complaining at all about Morse getting the gig but, Gary was (and still is) one of the greatest guitarists of all time and I feel his playing style would have been more suited for Purple yet interjecting his well recognized style to the fold. Don Airey is here playing too which there you have 3 thirds of a Gary infused Purple line-up. With Gillan and Glover added…… a masterful DEEP PURPLE. I can hear it now……. OK, back to the present which is Just Fine and Friggin’ Dandy. 😉

April 18th, 2015 at 16:24Tracy @44
Gary Moore was special. But he was a restless kind of guy, never stayed in a band or kept a lineup of his own going for very long. He knew his own weakness as well – overplaying – and was candid about it in a lovely, very affectionate BBC radio documentary he made about Rory Gallagher. I still rate his Back on the Streets album up there with the best, with some of Don’s finest playing. But I don’t think he would even have considered playing in a band like Purple at that stage in his career where 75% at least of what he played every night would be other people’s – specifically Ritchie’s – stuff.
April 18th, 2015 at 22:34I love when the Ian angry

Well done Ian Paice – long overdue. You’re a fantastic drummer, sir.
Yes to some of the comments regarding Brian Downey – couldn’t agree more – a great drummer.
Thanks Pacey, you gave me the rhythm of my live! And you made my live happy. I’m so grateful. I could cry😘
