This is something to wait for. IMHO Mr Lord’s solo work in recent years (Pictured Within, Beyond the Notes) is the most interesting music any of the Purple people have ever made solowise. As I understand retiring from constant touring was musically a very fruitful decision. (This is not to say I don’t like Rapture, I love it too.)

    Fantastic work, thank you Jon!

What struck me was the comment that Lord made in an interview recently that he tends to compose either at the piano, or ‘out in the garden’ with a sheet of staff paper. Most people need a reference. To write down something out of one’s head and put it on paper is testament to Lord’s vast experience.

He also mentions he learned how to orchestrate on his own, which brings back memories of myself looking at scores and trying to score things (when I should have been doing schoolwork)–an art form in itself. This takes a lot of skill and knowledge, dealing with balance and transposed instruments, etc. I could never do it right.

Jon also mentions that within the next couple of years, with the 40th anniversary of DP and by ’09, the anniversary of the formation with Gillan and Glover, that “something” will be done–he just doesn’t know what or when, exactly.
