The kids are all right
A collection of pictures taken by Torben Skøtt at the Vejlby Risskov Hallen, Aarhus, Denmark, on February 3, 1973 has been posted online. A very relaxed crowd at a rather intimate setting with Mark II in full flight. You can see it at torbenskott.dk.

Those kids are right onstage….I think we could call Deep Purple Mark II a real “people’s band!” This was literally “audience participation.”
You couldn’t have this kind of scenario nowadays with all those “security” concerns and diva behavior of the artists.

January 2nd, 2015 at 06:09Ah, those were the days, ‘back in the good old days’! When you could wander around anywhere at a gig, no bullshit security was needed, well, mostly not needed so to speak! No crap mobile phones being held up in front of you with some git wanking himself to someone else on the other end, wherever that person may be, most probably right next to them! Sheesh, you could even pass a drink or a joint to some band members at times, depending on the band & the individual of course! I wouldn’t try that with Blackers though, probably get your head kicked by one of those ‘platform’ shoes he used to wear! Oh well, best not get too nostalgic though, oh fuck it, why not!

January 3rd, 2015 at 01:41What was it about shows in Denmark back in the day? The March 1, ’72 Copenhagen, Denmark Tivoli Hall DVD has kids on the stage during the show. The ‘Danish Yodel Beware’ boot has a cover shot (maybe taken there?) of bouncers pushing the crowd off the stage who are right up against the band on stage as well! Now these great atmospheric shots of kids right in the band’s faces. Not much room for Ritchie to ‘do his thing’ and toss the strat around though! But at this point in his career he had mellowed his stage antics out significantly…unfortunately.

January 4th, 2015 at 22:39I was there! Age of 16 at the time. Not a very good concert though. The vibes on stage were pretty bad and the crowd responded with quite a bit of discontent. Gillan and Blackmore both in a bad mood. I actually remember that Jon Lord left his organ and started playing air guitar in a very demonstrative manner right in front of – and face to – Blackmore. It didn’t help at lot! Danish Yodel in 1971 was much better. That was my first rock concert ever – and still my best:-) Looking forward to the new album. ‘Now what’ is great!
January 7th, 2015 at 19:10It makes you wonder when thinking of it from the bands perspective, how difficult it would be to play with all those fans clambering about all over the place! Sheeesh, talk about lucky or what! Imagine being that close to the stage in today’s ‘rock’ concert atmoss, especially if it was a Justin Bieber or One Direction gig! How exciting! Cheers.

Amazing shots – thanks for sharing. A very young audience. One of the pictures shows a kid with his fingers in his ears (DP_1973_020.html). In the same photo you can spot at least 5 photo camera’s in the audience!
