They dye their hair black

Roger Glover spoke to the Arizona Republic to promote the upcoming tour. After telling the now familiar story of making the last album, an interesting questing popped up:

Q: You and Ian made your first appearance on 1970’s “Deep Purple in Rock.” Were you a fan going into that?

A: Ian and I differ on that. I had never heard of the band. He says he had, but I’m not sure how true that is. Deep Purple meant nothing in England. In 1968, when “Hush” was a big hit in the States, nothing happened in England. I got turned on to the band just before I joined by the Sweet. Remember the Sweet? Brian Connelly and I were friends. And he said, “Listen to this band, Deep Purple.” I said, “Oh, I never heard of them.” He said, “They dye their hair black.” But the first real impression I got of the band was my audition, which was recording a single. And I was blown away by their musicianship, especially … well, all of them.

Apart from Pink Floyd, nothing beats Deep Purple Mk 2. Nothing !! This current Deep Purple doesnt come close.

Steve….Pink Floyd is flash…. Deep Purple is substance. Talent-wise Purple wipes the floor with them.

I would like to know to whom Roger was referring when he said, “…especially…well, all of them.” I’m thinking it was Blackmore, but he could not bring himself to say it.

Still a great band with all the lineups

    Patrick Michels says:

He was probably gonna say Ritchie then he thought of Jon then paicey and “all of them”

It’s Connolly. Sorry to be a smart Ass, but I truly love Sweet. And that hurts…
Apart of that, it is astonishing where the seeds came from. I knew that RG produced Judas Priest and Rory Gallagher, who both are Musical favourites of mine, but Sweet was new to me. It strenghtens the whole appearance to me. Sweet was, IMHO if I may use it, a very harmonical and Musical band. They did a lot of, very underrated Rock stuff, which are still rockin’. Songs like ‘Set me free’ and ‘ She gimme’ lovin’ are quite heavy and fun to listen to. Great to read that there is a deeper (!) Assoziation between them. It might be off-topic, but we want Sweet…

And Blackers played with them …

    Cheers from Vienna

especially … well, all of them. ????
Was he about to single out TMIB?
Because if it was Jon, I’m sure he would have said it.

Glad he nailed his colours to the mast about the Hall of fame. It is a joke and not worthy of their time and attention.

I LOVE DEEP PURPLE AND ALWAYS WILL. I SAW THE BAND BACK IN 76 WITH MY THEN GIRLFRIEND CAROL IN LAKELAND FLORIDA. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT SHOW AS LONG AS I LIVE. WE SAT ALL THE WAY AGAINST THE BACK WALL, I WAS YELLING IN HER EAR TWO FEET AWAY AND SHE COULDN’T HEAR A DAMN WORD. 115 DECIBLES THE LOUDEST BAND IN THE WORLD. WHAT A FANTASTIC SHOW THE MUSIC WENT RIGHT THROUGH YOUR BODY… THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

Tony @ 2- oh, touchy Floyd comment, treading on dangerously thin ice there! Wipe the floor, that is an old Blackmore saying isn’t it?
Seriously, talent wise, what, playing & singing ability??????Or songwriting & arranging?????? Each to their own as we say!
They are both in separate realms indeed! I think Floyd are one of the biggest rock bands period, are they not? Second to The Beatles from what I have read! In the influence & popularity realms, but also pushing cosmic proportions on album sales! Seriously, these two bands are never to be compared, ever! Purple are legends in their own world & no one compares to them also! They are both classic British institutions! Cheers.

There you have it Gents!…..in reference to the RRHOF, some very choice comments by RG: “But it’s gone past a joke now.”…..”I don’t really want to be part of it.”……”I don’t know whether we would accept it. It’s almost like an insult”.

He has hit the nail on the head. The Hall is a sham, its not worth bothering about anymore. Deep Purple does not need hollow validation by some blatantly biased commercial corporate hype machine such as that. Purple play real music for people who appreciate real music. The Hall and its hangers-on and cronies are so blinded by hype, they can’t see or hear what’s real.

    Bjørn Are Davidsen says:

I think ELP was one of the few bands that matched Purple in intensity and musicianship in 1970-72. Pink Floyd never did.

@2, “Current Purple?!” How creative. I guess you have to suck to last. I say there are just people with holes in their hearts, so they consciously keep holes in their ears, so they can say such ignorant things.

    Scott W. says:

Is it @1 or @2? Now people can’t even get straight who they want to attack…
Can’t wait to see the ‘current’ DP in 3 days in Lincoln, CA! It won’t be MK II (or MKIII or MKIV, #16 or #20 for that matter) but I’ll be there for any incarnation! Even if my favorite DP musicians are no longer in the band!
