More details about the Ronnie James Dio tribute album were released to the press today and one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb as far as we are concerned is conspicuous absence of Gillan’s contribution to the track list, along with some other big names announced earlier.

February 7th, 2014 at 03:11It doesn’t surprise me at all that Gillan isn’t on the ‘tribute’ album. I was surprised to see his name in the first place, I don’t know why, but for some reason I thought ‘Gillan, on a Dio tribute album’? On a more serious note & some will know what I think of ‘tribute’ albums! The metal lickers butchering the classic Rainbow Rising era material, this will not be tolerated, something must be done, anything, were desperate to stop this sacrilegious mutiny! Enough, the metal lickers are irrelevant, surely someone more deserving could have attempted this dastardly crime! Anthrax playing (slaughtering)Neon Knights????????? RIP RJ DIO! At least he won’t have to hear this album at all! Cheers.

February 8th, 2014 at 11:41If that album cover that is over at Classic Rock is the actual cover, that is terrible & embarrassing! It looks like a send up in a way, a comic book cover, surely they could have come up with something more original & a touch more mature perhaps! Over the years some ‘metal’ images of certain bands, have really made me wonder about the seriousness of, well being taken seriously! No wonder Spinal Tap did so well! Cheers.
February 8th, 2014 at 12:45I am always guarded about these ‘tribute’ albums though in this case there are some rock classics which will need/should be treated with respect. I am a Metallica fan and believe they can still cut it today in the metal world. Kirk Hammett is a Blackmore fan and was inspired by Ritchie during their brilliant ‘Death Magnetic’ album and Lars Ulrich is a Blackmore fan too. Will be interesting to hear their interpretation of the Rainbow classics and I am sure they will do justice and honor both the songs and Ronnie very well

Just as well. With the exception of Dio himself, the others on this album don’t even come close to Gillian’s talent.

February 8th, 2014 at 20:59The question as to the relevance of this or other Tribute albums depends on the purchaser. Many Tribute albums have come and gone. Some I enjoyed, some not. Maiden, Sabbath, Purple, Rainbow, Alice, SRV, pretty much all of the iconic bands have had Tribute albums done on their behalf. Some multiple. Many while the band is still together. Generally they are done by bands or artists whom are or were influenced by the music from the band honored. DIO and his music influenced and paved the way for many aspiring singers and players. Just as somebody influenced and paved the way for him. My take on Tribute albums is that there is nothing wrong with them. Actually I find them quite interesting at times. Hearing other takes on some of these tunes by musicians whom overall respect and ‘owe’ their status to the music which influenced and drove their passion to their own success is testimony to their appreciation and I find it a noble effort overall. Especially in this case whereby proceeds from the sales are slated to go to the ‘Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund’.
The statement by Metallica below, from the BraveWords article pretty much sums up my point: A message from Metallica states:
“Throughout the years we’ve made no secret of our deep love and admiration for Ronnie James Dio. Whether it was with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell or Dio, his powerful voice was instantly recognizable and his music inspired and influenced the four of us tremendously. When we were asked to be a part of a tribute album for Ronnie, of course we immediately said “fuck yeah!” Choosing a song to record, however, was a MUCH harder decision… so we did four!”

Glenn can sing storming rockers if he wants too.

When real metal bands do covers of otherwise great Classic rock songs it often turns out dissappointing.

I also wish for an unorthodox approach.
Tori Amos doing covers by Zeppelin and Nirvana, thats the way to go, Not giving honour and stage to those soulless metal bands.

Before 2000 I saw some amazing shows but around that time something changed, I think.
Since then it got harder for me to listen to.
I asked friends of mine and said they understood where I came from…..
Glenn must be really angry by now becaise on FB he never replies to my comments. 🙁
