Machine Head on UK tour

Roger Glover and Steve Morse

Deep Purple were featured on British radio Planet Rock yesterday. The DJ Nicky Horne mentiond that:

  • April will be Deep Purple month on Planet Rock.
  • He saw DP in Strasbourg the other day.
  • Did a 90-minute “tell-me-some-anecdotes” session with Ian Paice, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover.
  • Also did an interview with Ian Gillan.
  • These will be aired in April.
  • Said that the UK tour will reprise the 2004 US tour idea to play “Machine Head” in its entirety and running order through the second half of the set.

Thanks to Nigel Young for the info.

A re-united MKII would just be a “nostalgia trip” according to Glover. I wonder what he calls the current tour??????

Given that Machine Head according to Rolling Stone and countless other Rock Magazines is Deep Purple’s crowning achievement, I can see why Purple would pander to its audience in the USA with the Machine Head set. Deep Purple has been far more enduring and representative of Hard Rock past and present in other countries. I would think the band at this point could pull off a “Fireball” or an “In Rock” feature in their set to compliment the evenings second half during RAPTURE TOUR. I have to believe many fans such as myself would be enthralled with a presentation along these lines. THat would go for any Deep Purple album the current line up has the inclination to revisit in its entirety. Ive always had a perverse attachment to “Who do we think we are?” went to see them at Cobo Hall in 1973 expecting to hear that album and got the same show we saw in 1972. Fantastic stuff ! but , Been There, Done that.

Saw the “Machine Head” concept in San Francisco & LA. I wasn’t comfortable with the idea but was won over by the performence, particularily, in LA which was one of the best DP shows ever. Having said that, though, I would love to see Purple take that concept with the twist being playing the whole new album, in this case, “Rapture of the Deep”, and then playing the “standards”. Now, that would be novel!

I live in England and i had to drag my girlfriend and went to see DP performing at the Beacon Theatre in NY in mach 2004 during their “Bananas” tour. I knew they were playing the entire set of “Machine Head” and they were superb. People have to look at any of DP set list for any show in the last 14 years and you will find at least 4 or 5 songs from MH so adding the rest of the songs from the album will not do any harm. I just hope they do it in the first half of the show so they can concentrate on the newer stuff later.

Purple performed the entire Machine Head album back in the US 2003. THis was during the bananas tour in which they played several other songs as well.

I dissaprove on principle really; I know they play the bulk of Machine Head already but it will overshadow a lot of other song people want to hear.

I was holding back to get tickets at standing tickets at Brighton. I won’t bother now.

I think Machine Head is the bet alblum Deep Purple ever made. It’s a classic. Looking forward to see them come to the Baltimore Maryland area.

My favorite studio album to play from DP, is Machine Head, with Lazy being the top choice. I was into DP before the radio gaga of the Made In Japan “Smoke On The Water”. DP’s appearance at Live 8 concert in 2005 was superb. Ian Paice is still one of the best Rock Drummers around.

Deep Purple’s problem is there studio LPS,they never followed through with the heavy sound of Machine Head.Perfect Strangers set the stage for what purple have been pumping out since 84,simply basic hard rock.Thats whey people at there concerts just want to listen to Machine head, because it leans towards heavy metal.Heard in interviews in the mid 80’s,with “Purple and especially Gillans hate of Heavy Metal”,for a band that pioneered it,for that confusing.
