Geddy Lee wants Deep Purple in Hall of Fame
Geddy Lee of Rush was interviewed by radio.com and, among other things, they’ve asked him how he’s going to vote for the next year’s Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame induction candidates (everybody who is already inducted are voting members themselves):
Well, certainly Deep Purple, certainly Yes. I have to give it a more complete thought but those are two names that stand out as omissions in my view. I think one of the things the Hall of Fame looks for is influential bands. And if influence is a big part of their criteria, and you can make the case clearly for Deep Purple.

November 14th, 2013 at 19:43Geddy Lee from Rush awesome! Excellent comments that we know he has stated before regarding both bands huge influence in rock music. I remember reading an interview decades ago with him & he said that the Yes album ‘Relayer’ was his “deserted island” album, if he had to be stuck somewhere with one album, that would be it! There are many others also as we all know, but apparently you are only ‘allowed’ one album! I remember having these sort of ‘debates’ years ago with friends, the trouble is it is impossible to just select one album! It is good fun trying though! Cheers.

In my opinion the Rock-music started with artist like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, then The Who, The Yardbirds, The Doors, even The Kinks.
But the “Big Bang” was in the early 70s with “In Rock” among with the first albums of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
Then the Rock-music developed in many different directions: We had “Art-Rock” (Genesis, Yes), “Melodic-Rock” (Wishbone Ash), “Progressive-Rock” (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), “Psychedelic-Rock” (Pink Floyd)…
The induction of our favourite band would be much too late…

There are too many rock-and-roll legends who are raising Cain (No More Cane on the Brazos?!), for them to be ever-more excluded. Thing is, Purple should not – in any way, shape or form – blame the American fans for this monumental and ignorant snub. We’re disgusted, too. But, I suppose, I should qualify that to say us fans over age 35 (I’m 51). Anyway, younger listens only to the corporate-fed crap that passes as music on the airwaves anymore. Merry Christmas.

November 22nd, 2013 at 00:39I agree with Scott Irons (post 8). These award ceremonies are run by the business to boost sales. It’s the only reason they exist. Ritchie summed it up perfectly when Purple were in line for a Nordoff Robbins lifetime achievement award in 1993 but didn’t get it after after Ritchie decided not to go. The organisers condition was that all 5 band members should be at the ceremony to receive the award. As Ritchie pointed out, “We were only getting an award for turning up!”

Here is an interesting piece of PR for the induction of Yes into the Hall of Fame! Purple are mentioned briefly on the first page I think, I read some of it, but this rave does give an indication of what can go on in the ‘process’ of an artist getting the ‘nod’ so to speak! Cheers.

Very informative insight as to how the committee works in this article. Good for YES getting some backing from a high powered activist in their support. Too bad Purple can’t get that type of organized effort behind them. An organized effort from a large group of people would sure be useful. Hmmm where on earth could Purple find such a supportive group of fans???? Obviously not within the confines of THS where there are too many bickering and oppositionists whom can’t hardly agree on anything but disagreeing. With fans like that alone Purple has about as much chance as a snowflake in a furnace. Who will be their champion, striving to get them inducted? Obviously not the RRHOF committee. The unlikely push for YES by Washington DC politicians is an example of what Purple is up against. Nice to know where my tax dollars are going. I guess this furthers the Obama campaign slogan… “YES we Can”. Now if only Purple had a large well organized group to speak loudly in their behalf…. hmmm, any ideas where on earth they could get that kind of support???

I only read a portion of that article & thought sheeesh, if that is the kind of ‘support’ that goes on with an artist getting the ‘nod’, it makes you wonder about the ‘politics’ of it all. It is strange to me as Deep Purple are more popular than Yes in many ways, but as you say, who is pushing the bandwagon for Purple?

Is it Blackmore showing them the proverbial middle finger perhaps? Surely Nirvana won’t get in ahead of Purple, Yes & Kiss!
Regarding the the fans agreeing or disagreeing etc, don’t worry there is plenty of that going on at the main Yes fan sites. Rather nasty also some Yes fans in regards to certain things, but the usual likes or dislikes to a particular lineup, or era or album etc! I can see Purple getting in this year at the HOF, Kiss also no doubt, as they have been huge in the States particularly, but also overseas. Yes may have to wait another year, but how many artists get in each year? If it is 3 then maybe those 3 hopefully! Cheers.
