Geddy Lee wants Deep Purple in Hall of Fame
Geddy Lee of Rush was interviewed by radio.com and, among other things, they’ve asked him how he’s going to vote for the next year’s Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame induction candidates (everybody who is already inducted are voting members themselves):
Well, certainly Deep Purple, certainly Yes. I have to give it a more complete thought but those are two names that stand out as omissions in my view. I think one of the things the Hall of Fame looks for is influential bands. And if influence is a big part of their criteria, and you can make the case clearly for Deep Purple.
Thanks to radio.com for the info.
‘Everyone who is already inducted are voting members themselves” but of course no one blames them for the actual bollocks! Amazing! Instead it has to be the owner and all of these unknown characters that make up their committee? Huh, if you don’t know the majority of voters, you’re living in a Swiss cave.
November 14th, 2013 at 17:11They should have done it why Jon Lord was still alive, they so deserve it
November 14th, 2013 at 17:13And blackmore deserve it to
November 14th, 2013 at 17:20so unbeleavable that they didn’t get the nod before Lord passed away
November 14th, 2013 at 17:41Yes! I agree lol.
November 14th, 2013 at 17:52old news! as long as that voting is lead by Rolling Stone magazine is going to be biased !
November 14th, 2013 at 18:02Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
November 14th, 2013 at 18:38rock and roll hall of bollocks ! who needs them ? we all know purple are the best heavy rock band in the world !! .. i say if purple are invited to join Gillan should say thanks but no thanks we are waaay too cool to join the pop bands.
November 14th, 2013 at 18:41… Every night I have the same old dream … (Old Rainbow song: Stone Cold)
Every year the same old crap …
Nobody – incl. our friends in purple and their mangement – want to be in the RnRHOF beside a Donna Summer etc.
Thats no Rock’N’Roll – its american commercial crap …

November 14th, 2013 at 18:59geddy i love ya but i love even more with that comment deep purple were pioneer,s like zep and sabbath they should be lumped together 20 year,s to late far as im concerned
November 14th, 2013 at 19:43Geddy Lee from Rush awesome! Excellent comments that we know he has stated before regarding both bands huge influence in rock music. I remember reading an interview decades ago with him & he said that the Yes album ‘Relayer’ was his “deserted island” album, if he had to be stuck somewhere with one album, that would be it! There are many others also as we all know, but apparently you are only ‘allowed’ one album! I remember having these sort of ‘debates’ years ago with friends, the trouble is it is impossible to just select one album! It is good fun trying though! Cheers.
November 14th, 2013 at 20:52boooorrrriiiinnnnggggg !!!!!!!!!!
November 14th, 2013 at 23:25Looks like another case of “Deja Poo”. Definition: ‘The feeling that you have heard this shit before’….. Kind of like an Obama speech.

November 15th, 2013 at 01:47Well Gents!
As I predicted, Deep Purple did not receive a single prize at the Classic Rock Awards last evening. Black Sabbath got the lion’s share of everything.
MacGregor! Remember that stream you and I had a couple of months back on all this. Its all soooooooo predictable.
Deep Purple – forever the bridesmaid, never the bride!!!!
November 15th, 2013 at 03:58It is funny how when a conversation comes up about great bands, particularly among musicians, no-one seems to remember Deep Purple until they are brought up by someone else.
Then comes a pause, usually followed by, “Oh, yeah… Deep Purple… They were the best…”
November 15th, 2013 at 03:59@ 11
Yeah, it is really hard to select just one album in the old ‘desert island’ scenario and I’ve given it a lot of thought over the years. I finally decided on Philosophy Of The World by The Shaggs…
It’d probably be a good frisby and perhaps provide some shade, and maybe I could even eat the fish I caught with my bare hands off it. Thank god there wouldn’t be a turntable to play it on!

November 15th, 2013 at 05:14Rock n Roll Hall of Shame !
November 15th, 2013 at 05:16…one too many Wasted Sunsets…
In my opinion the Rock-music started with artist like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, then The Who, The Yardbirds, The Doors, even The Kinks.
But the “Big Bang” was in the early 70s with “In Rock” among with the first albums of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
Then the Rock-music developed in many different directions: We had “Art-Rock” (Genesis, Yes), “Melodic-Rock” (Wishbone Ash), “Progressive-Rock” (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), “Psychedelic-Rock” (Pink Floyd)…
The induction of our favourite band would be much too late…
…one too many Wasted Sunsets…
Have a nice Day!
November 15th, 2013 at 10:21Nice one Ged!

November 15th, 2013 at 12:12Some comments in that last(CRMagazine) post of mine are interesting maybe?
Btw, I guess Geddy has missed the fact that Blackmore has no interest in being invited by the Hall Of Crap.
Like so many others, that is.
November 15th, 2013 at 12:15Or do they think : I ll keep repeating this and Blackmore will do what I want?!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
November 15th, 2013 at 14:05I do believe they certainly deserve to be in but Blackmore seems to have no interest. I doubt he would even show up if elected in.
November 15th, 2013 at 14:15The RRHOF committee will not admit they omitted the most influential band ever. Not just once either. The more you point it out the more mute the argument becomes. Ritchie B. is no doubt one of the greatest at his craft yet others half as good continue to be called great. Two of the greatest travesties in R & R.
November 15th, 2013 at 15:08#11: the desert island record is easy: Made in Japan!
November 15th, 2013 at 17:01What else could it be?
Geddy knows his sh*t.
November 15th, 2013 at 22:42Hey PP@ 21,
Bet ya Ritchie shows up to the RRHOF if happens. His ‘manager’ will demand it along with his other boss, meanwhile a no-show at Dear Jon’s event. How high will he jump? It’s up to them…..he will do what ‘they’ want.

November 16th, 2013 at 16:19purpoz @ 14- Ha ha! I can honestly say I have NEVER heard of them before! Thanks for that, what a way to start my Sunday morning.
November 16th, 2013 at 21:39Is it a send up? Most probably not, but yes I agree big time, a frisbee indeed! Man they are bad & I will hope to not have any nightmares over hearing them & I will definitely have to remember them to a few friends who will have a good laugh indeed! Cheers!
Deeperpurps @ 14 – Yes, it is very predictable. I don’t disagree with Sabbath getting the album award, I like the album, but it was predictable! The Stones winning band of the year says it all! That category is sponsored by a huge investment company, say no more.
November 16th, 2013 at 21:51The same for the album of the year, sponsored by Live Nation who are Sabbaths promoters for their world tour! Big Money indeed, & the big name bands who are commercially viable at the time will always win it seems!
Zeppelin also winning for the film of the year, not that I disagree with that at all, but another huge name again!
Fleetwood Mac for reissue of the year also! Cha ching! Cheers!
Purpoz @ 16 – My previous post @29 regarding your ‘deserted island record’ should have had @ 16! Where did you ever hear that band from? Their incredibly bad, diabolical! Good for a laugh though! Excellent humour. Cheers.
November 16th, 2013 at 22:01How could Purple not win one award at the Classic Rock Awards. Classic Rock is always very good to Purple in there magazines but there not good enough to win awards. What The F^%##
November 17th, 2013 at 04:06talking about Desert Island Discs :
Assault Attack by MSG with Graham Bonnet should be enough to get Michael and Graham into such a shithole/hall.
November 17th, 2013 at 15:00If DP did not get a simple mention in the Classic Award this year, just when Now What?! is receiving such good critics, then i am sure they wont’be mention anymore!
November 17th, 2013 at 15:37Rush was in a similar position and were similarly disinterested before they made it last year. They went ahead and did it because:
Their fans wanted them to…
It is priceless free PR…
Blackers probably won’t show up…but bring in all of the rest of the family and have a big old time…assuming Rolling Stone gets their act together…
And that is doubtful…
November 18th, 2013 at 15:37hey, intelligent musician says intelligent words. Greetings from Argentina, Mr Geddy Lee!!1
November 19th, 2013 at 12:06Deep Purple will get into the Hall of Shame, eventually. There are too many rock-and-roll legends who are raising Cain (No More Cane on the Brazos?!), for them to be ever-more excluded. Thing is, Purple should not – in any way, shape or form – blame the American fans for this monumental and ignorant snub. We’re disgusted, too. But, I suppose, I should qualify that to say us fans over age 35 (I’m 51). Anyway, younger listens only to the corporate-fed crap that passes as music on the airwaves anymore. Merry Christmas.
November 20th, 2013 at 02:11The so called Hall of Fame is a bloody joke!!! If Deep Purple gets inducted or not it doesn’t matter… Madonna? Michael Jackson? Ha, ha, ha!!! Deep Purple is “Above and Beyond”…they don’t need The Hall of Shame!!!
November 22nd, 2013 at 00:39I agree with Scott Irons (post 8). These award ceremonies are run by the business to boost sales. It’s the only reason they exist. Ritchie summed it up perfectly when Purple were in line for a Nordoff Robbins lifetime achievement award in 1993 but didn’t get it after after Ritchie decided not to go. The organisers condition was that all 5 band members should be at the ceremony to receive the award. As Ritchie pointed out, “We were only getting an award for turning up!”
November 23rd, 2013 at 16:47If Deep Purple doesn’t get in this time, I’ll be ashamed of peoples musical philosophies! The sheer talent that has circulated through this Giant of a Rock Band is awe inspiring. Of course on this site, I don’t need to list the members because it’s embedded is our brains already. I’ll give you a quote that I heard the other day from one of our DJ’s on our local Rock Radio station. If Purple is not inducted this time around, look for a Purple Burndown at the Hall of Shame!! not my words mind you! but I have to agree, there will be a Purple Riot!!!! BP
November 27th, 2013 at 15:33Who cares whether Deep Purple are in the Hall of Fame.
Let the music speak.
November 29th, 2013 at 09:57Hey BTWP @40…
If you lead the movement, I’ll gladly be your wing-man.

November 29th, 2013 at 14:50@ 41 and others …
That is while Ritchie don´t want to be in the RnRHoF …
Let the music play …
We all know: the Rock Music Scene without Deep Purple would not a Rock Music Scene …
I like Ritchie as a individual person with his own decided opinions and uncomfortable meanings.
But – and thats the different to many other people – HE talks AND lives his own way !!! (and not the money)
So because of that: No RnRHoF !!

November 30th, 2013 at 07:45It looks like the Purps are going to end in 3rd position & Yes fourth behind the 2 very predictable US bands, Kiss & Nirvana!
December 3rd, 2013 at 06:50Well that sort of says it all really! Does 3rd place get them in? Cheers.
If they aint gonna put Purple in there for Gods Sake at least put Dio and the Scorpions in so we can get recognition for the Purple family tree.
December 4th, 2013 at 08:13Purple and KISS should be in there for sure. KISS has been around since 1974. Purple since 1968. Nirvana? Way later on in the 80s. Seniority alone should be enough, not to mention their influence and impact over the years. Pure and simple. And as ‘purrfect stranger’ @45 wrote regarding the Purple Family Tree. Hell, it ain’t no tree, it’s a friggin’ forest…..

Here is an interesting piece of PR for the induction of Yes into the Hall of Fame! Purple are mentioned briefly on the first page I think, I read some of it, but this rave does give an indication of what can go on in the ‘process’ of an artist getting the ‘nod’ so to speak! Cheers.
December 9th, 2013 at 07:00MacGregor @47;
Very informative insight as to how the committee works in this article. Good for YES getting some backing from a high powered activist in their support. Too bad Purple can’t get that type of organized effort behind them. An organized effort from a large group of people would sure be useful. Hmmm where on earth could Purple find such a supportive group of fans???? Obviously not within the confines of THS where there are too many bickering and oppositionists whom can’t hardly agree on anything but disagreeing. With fans like that alone Purple has about as much chance as a snowflake in a furnace. Who will be their champion, striving to get them inducted? Obviously not the RRHOF committee. The unlikely push for YES by Washington DC politicians is an example of what Purple is up against. Nice to know where my tax dollars are going. I guess this furthers the Obama campaign slogan… “YES we Can”. Now if only Purple had a large well organized group to speak loudly in their behalf…. hmmm, any ideas where on earth they could get that kind of support???
!Ch-BeerZ?
December 10th, 2013 at 14:50Tracy @ 48 – yes, I know what you are saying. I only read a portion of that article & thought sheeesh, if that is the kind of ‘support’ that goes on with an artist getting the ‘nod’, it makes you wonder about the ‘politics’ of it all. It is strange to me as Deep Purple are more popular than Yes in many ways, but as you say, who is pushing the bandwagon for Purple?
December 12th, 2013 at 08:01Purple have more votes than Yes at the moment, but does that matter at all? Is there an anti Purple thing with certain members of the HOF & if so why? Is it Blackmore showing them the proverbial middle finger perhaps? Surely Nirvana won’t get in ahead of Purple, Yes & Kiss!
Regarding the the fans agreeing or disagreeing etc, don’t worry there is plenty of that going on at the main Yes fan sites. Rather nasty also some Yes fans in regards to certain things, but the usual likes or dislikes to a particular lineup, or era or album etc! I can see Purple getting in this year at the HOF, Kiss also no doubt, as they have been huge in the States particularly, but also overseas. Yes may have to wait another year, but how many artists get in each year? If it is 3 then maybe those 3 hopefully! Cheers.
Obama seemed to enjoy Led Zeppelin.
So he still gets my vote.
December 14th, 2013 at 20:33Geddy must be disappointed today.
