Purple pool fun: rare 1968 promo clip

This clip of Deep Purple miming to Hush by a swimming pool in October 1968 has surfaced (ahem).

Watch Jon’s splendid Chaplin impersonation, Evans in skimpy swimmers, Paicey and Nick having a laff, and Ritchie almost missing the spotlight entirely…

I can’t see the video, my computer warns me about your security certificate (it hasn’t done that with your previous posts). When I tell my computer to go ahead anyway, it takes me to the page, but no video…

What a GREAT clip! Wish it was 68 again. Why did Rod Evans leave the band? Didn’t he go on to fame in Argent?

Either France or Hollywood is being suspected at this point. My old tape says France, the uploader is from France. That checks out for that much anyway. But the location has been told as Hollywood before. I simply thought this had done rounds somewhere along the Youtube lines. Apparently not. Pretty rare indeed. I hadn’t watched it since 1990 or so. Not a promo clip but perhaps it is now. ๐Ÿ˜€ It’s essentially behind the scenes footage but it’s also possible it did air, of course. But I would guess only once. lol

Just watched the video, fantastic!! I wish more things like this would appear. I would love to have a live dvd of Deep Purple Mark 1. Does anyone out there ever think this will happen? Other than the poorly recorded L.A. forum show from 1968 I have never seen any live Mark 1 concert.

Great video, great band! But then again, they got better during 1969 ๐Ÿ™‚ There’s quite a few highlights to find when it comes to Purple, and MKII In Rock is one of them. So is Fireball, MH and WDWTWA. So is Burn, Stormbringer and CTTB. I guess I’m not their biggest fan when it comes to MKI, even if they had their moments:-/ They won me over again, after their 1976 break up, with Perfect Strangers, and then with the 1993 TBRA tour, then again with that amazing album Purpendicular album. Abandon was great, Bananas could’ve been great if it wasn’t for the poor production, same goes for ROTD (even more so). Now What?! What can I say?? Classic Purple ๐Ÿ™‚ MKI would’ve been proud ๐Ÿ˜‰

The most intriguing thing for me is the Telecaster–equipped with a Bigsby. This is during Blackmore’s ES-335 years, and while his red guitar was also equipped with the Bigsby, it is a little more unusual–but not unheard of–for a Telecaster. I’d not seen Blackmore with a Telecaster since the “Can’t Let You Go” promo from Bent Out of Shape. That one was a sunburst Telecaster but equipped with a Fender tremolo system. More than likely these were “borrowed” props, but I would like to know the story if anyone knows. It would not be out of character for Blackmore to experiment.

Amazing video, so great to see the humor and fun in the band. I hope there are more hidden gems out there for us to see in the future.

I didn’t know the Purps ever had it in them to make a good video – must be a long lost art with them. Flash thought: Shouldn’t Rod be crooning “I’m a speedo kink, you gotta hear me sink?”!

Makes me miss Jon. Damn, he even played fish net with style and aplomb.

EMI / Warners: re-promote this song with this accompanying video for next world record day. Who knows it could be a hit all over again! Vinyl / CD / DVD in one 7″ package.
