Purple pool fun: rare 1968 promo clip
This clip of Deep Purple miming to Hush by a swimming pool in October 1968 has surfaced (ahem).
Watch Jon’s splendid Chaplin impersonation, Evans in skimpy swimmers, Paicey and Nick having a laff, and Ritchie almost missing the spotlight entirely…

This is absolutely amazing. Deep Purple Mark I very youn had so much fun. Unbelievable. This has to be a official clip. Better than some clips nowadays. Incredible.

October 19th, 2013 at 10:37Eh Up! It’s blocked in Blighty by Sony/EMI.
October 19th, 2013 at 10:39I can’t see the video, my computer warns me about your security certificate (it hasn’t done that with your previous posts). When I tell my computer to go ahead anyway, it takes me to the page, but no video…

October 19th, 2013 at 13:03Incredible!!! How does a gem like this stay hidden for so long?!?!?! ha ha… Rock N Roll Deep Purple style …not too serious just fun…enjoyed it
October 19th, 2013 at 14:47I can’t see the video. The issue is the same: Untrusted connection. ((
October 19th, 2013 at 16:03Wow! What a great! Amazing! I’m gonna listen to the complete “Shades of Deep Purple” now.
October 19th, 2013 at 16:36Clip plays very well here (in Belgium). And no security warnings either…
October 19th, 2013 at 18:06Nice Jon Lord solo (on a table LOL)
same here
October 19th, 2013 at 18:11What a GREAT clip! Wish it was 68 again. Why did Rod Evans leave the band? Didn’t he go on to fame in Argent?
October 19th, 2013 at 18:38I’ve just made a download of the video before it is blocked in Germany.
Amazing…after 45 years!!!
Have a good day!
October 19th, 2013 at 19:13Either France or Hollywood is being suspected at this point. My old tape says France, the uploader is from France. That checks out for that much anyway. But the location has been told as Hollywood before. I simply thought this had done rounds somewhere along the Youtube lines. Apparently not. Pretty rare indeed. I hadn’t watched it since 1990 or so. Not a promo clip but perhaps it is now. ๐ It’s essentially behind the scenes footage but it’s also possible it did air, of course. But I would guess only once. lol
October 19th, 2013 at 19:51You can watch it via the “highway star” website. Cool document.
October 19th, 2013 at 21:41Just watched the video, fantastic!! I wish more things like this would appear. I would love to have a live dvd of Deep Purple Mark 1. Does anyone out there ever think this will happen? Other than the poorly recorded L.A. forum show from 1968 I have never seen any live Mark 1 concert.
October 19th, 2013 at 21:47Great video, great band! But then again, they got better during 1969 ๐ There’s quite a few highlights to find when it comes to Purple, and MKII In Rock is one of them. So is Fireball, MH and WDWTWA. So is Burn, Stormbringer and CTTB. I guess I’m not their biggest fan when it comes to MKI, even if they had their moments:-/ They won me over again, after their 1976 break up, with Perfect Strangers, and then with the 1993 TBRA tour, then again with that amazing album Purpendicular album. Abandon was great, Bananas could’ve been great if it wasn’t for the poor production, same goes for ROTD (even more so). Now What?! What can I say?? Classic Purple ๐ MKI would’ve been proud ๐
October 19th, 2013 at 23:36The most intriguing thing for me is the Telecaster–equipped with a Bigsby. This is during Blackmore’s ES-335 years, and while his red guitar was also equipped with the Bigsby, it is a little more unusual–but not unheard of–for a Telecaster. I’d not seen Blackmore with a Telecaster since the “Can’t Let You Go” promo from Bent Out of Shape. That one was a sunburst Telecaster but equipped with a Fender tremolo system. More than likely these were “borrowed” props, but I would like to know the story if anyone knows. It would not be out of character for Blackmore to experiment.

October 20th, 2013 at 07:16Amazing video, so great to see the humor and fun in the band. I hope there are more hidden gems out there for us to see in the future.
October 20th, 2013 at 13:07I fowarded it to my cousin in New jersey. He could not see/open it it.
October 20th, 2013 at 13:46I didn’t know the Purps ever had it in them to make a good video – must be a long lost art with them. Flash thought: Shouldn’t Rod be crooning “I’m a speedo kink, you gotta hear me sink?”!
Makes me miss Jon. Damn, he even played fish net with style and aplomb.
October 23rd, 2013 at 22:01EMI / Warners: re-promote this song with this accompanying video for next world record day. Who knows it could be a hit all over again! Vinyl / CD / DVD in one 7″ package.
