Behind the Iron Curtain
Ian Gillan’s four concerts were not simply a major music event in 1990 in Yerevan. The concerts proved that the world was changing and “iron curtain” was about to disappear.
One can hardly imagine how difficult the logistics of such concerts was in Yerevan of 1990. It would be no exaggeration to say that the organizers, Vahan Karapetyan and his friends, were real heroes. In March 2010, when organizing Ian Gillan’s concert with the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Armenia, Mediamax had to deal with numerous major and minor issues. Just imagine what it might have been like back in 1990. These people should be paid tribute to. Without their effort, Ian Gillan would never call Armenia his “spiritual home”.

January 7th, 2013 at 11:45@#2 Should we remind al that there’re a lot of other celebrities except Mr. Gillan?..
January 13th, 2013 at 10:39It was back in 1990 (?) when Ian was also in Latvia (harbor city Liepāja). It was HUGE event – although he dropped in just for a day and probably stay overnight. I still remember HUGE posters on walls in our capital city Riga, showing the legend – black/white photo of Ian, watching river flow in spring, brilliant sunshine… Later media coverage was something like “Legend…”, “seen from distance…”, some photos: black stage from the distance with spotlight beam on IAN GILLAN. Obviously, advertisement worked on a legendary aura everyone knew: Deep Purple Mark II etc., Jesus Christ Superstar. And now it’s time when communism collapses, and HE has come to say it loud. Thanks for coming, Ian. Most probably you don’t remember that any more, it was just a tiny detail in your schedule, but WE DID KNOW and GOT THE MESSAGE RIGHT.
