The Road To Nashville pt.2
Roger Glover has posted another progress report on the state of the new Deep Purple album:
As I stated in the last missive, after five weeks the band left Nashville with fourteen tracks all but complete. The only thing missing was the vocals. IG had several ideas floating around but only one or two were considered complete. So a few weeks later, at his invitation I flew to Portugal, where he regularly hangs out, and spent a week with him working on the lyrics and tunes. It truly was a refreshing time and it felt like we had been transported back to the 60s when we first started writing together. It was relaxed but positively focused and we came away feeling pretty good.

Not surprised by this, being that mr. gillian is fluent with the portuguese language .Good to hear that they are relaxed and not rushing things, maybe a little drink and smoke helps with rogers 60’s reference .

November 20th, 2012 at 15:20Ah yes. The Lennon/McCartney of Purple doing what they do best. This is good to read. It also seems to be leaning toward a little bit of schmoozing up some when one puts this together with the Gillan interview whereby he is pulling back on his negative harps regarding the RRHOF. I’d say these guys are finally coming to terms with where they are, where they are going and the light at the END of the tunnel. Time to bury all the hatchets and write some good tune, play them live and go with whatever chance there is for the spotlight before it goes out permanently. My bets are that this album will be solid and pleasing to ‘most’ fans. Even some ‘nay sayers’, but then we won’t know till it arrives. This fan is truly looking forward to it and though the obvious looms ahead (their eventual demise) I fantasize that there will be more to come and hopefully they will be energized with a desire to go right back in the studio for another go. Talk about a fan pleaser…that would really be kind gesture towards the fans such as most of us whom are disappointed in the lack of offerings over the last 7-8 years.

November 20th, 2012 at 16:55Gillan and Glover – “The Glimmer twins”… We can have our point of view about Gillans big mouth sometimes, and we can have mixed feelings about Glover mixing with Blackmore´s solo on Machine Head, but at the end of the day, you gotta love those guys, they´re still rocking!!

November 21st, 2012 at 21:09Really pleased that Roger and Ian were working so closely together on the lyrics and vocals and that the band and Bob have not rushed the recording process (unlike the previous two releases). Outside of Ian himself I imagine that no one knows Gillan’s voice better than Roger. Hopefully he’ll help draw out the best vocal performance from him. I really want this to be a fabulous album so that when they decide to call it a day they can go out with a bang rather than a whimper.

November 22nd, 2012 at 20:46al @ 18 – Are we talking about songs or lyrics or both? Some people write the music, some write the lyrics. A great songwriter usually writes both. Lennon & McCartney are in a class of their own, in regards to classic songwriters of modern music. As it has been well documented over the years, Lennon usually wrote the songs he sang, also the same for McCartney! There are other great songwriters of years gone by as well. I am curious as to which Gillan/Glover songs you are talking about?

My Lennon/McCartney remark was more figurative than literal, but at the same time, the pair (either) has been responsible for some incredible music. Lyrically though Gillan kills McCartney. There are some great creative tongue and cheek verses from Gillan. Sorry but aside from good jingles, I can’t say that about McCartney. Great hooks and some good simple melody is the Beatle secret, nothing else.

November 30th, 2012 at 05:16In the case of the Beatles, it wasn’t just those two who “wrote all of what they sang” so did Harrison and Starr. If they sang it, they penned the whole track. Fair game indeed it was. And yes, Gillan writes the melody every time, it’s called a “vocal melody.” Without it there is no lyric to put to it afterward. These are not instrumental melodies, of course. But I don’t think it is as difficult or anything, he just deserves credit that Blackmore nutcases try to deny him at every last turn. But I am glad to see so little of that in years here. Perhaps he’s the forgotten one? I hear there is a rumor he might remind listeners with a solo album. Who has the real scoop there?

Interesting that Gillan hasn’t produced anything near as good, by his “vocal melody”, to what Blackmore did in both Purple and Rainbow. It must be that his “humming” isn’t so good when Blackers isn’t there somewhere.
The proof is that only Mk2 “humming” was so good, as per this theory, to stay with them on set lists permanently.
From the other side Jon Lord once said that spark and riff was mostly – I repeat mostly – coming from Blackmore, and then they would work on it. Well, maybe Jon never heard this “humming”, probably all Burn album was also “hummed” by IG….

December 1st, 2012 at 16:08Re; Lennon?McCartney rave – I am not that big a Beatles fan, from about 1966 to 1970, never liked the early stuff, although the elements were already there in some of those songs! Are we talking about Deep Purple here or solo material? I used to own Gillan’s early albums & witnessed the Future Shock tour gig live in Sydney, Gillan went off big time, great gig & there are some good songs on his ‘solo’ material. Glover also with the Butterfly Ball concept, no one is saying they cannot write songs! But really, if classic songwriters are mentioned figuratively or literal or whatever, it makes you think? Deep Purple were usually a ‘group’ in the writing process, ok maybe not on every song, but how many were written by just two individuals, who knows the answer to that one. The vocalist usually provides the ‘vocal melody’ in most cases, but not always! Blackmore works very well with the vocalists that he is involved with, & also Glover in Purple & Rainbow. The same with Jimmy Page & the vocalists he has written with & even Tony Iommi with Dio & Martin, although Geezer was apparently involved big time in classic 70’s Sabbath!. Writing songs in very different to writing lyrics only, there are great songs out there, there are good songs as well, & there are plenty of bad songs also! But that is my individual opinion! It is what we hear or what we do not hear, that matters! Cheers.
