The story of Babyface
Classic Rock Magazine has the story of the short lived supergroup Babyface comprised of Blackmore, Paice and Phil Lynott. It is based on Colin Hart’s memoirs with additional input from Paicey.
Colin Hart:
Ritchie used to love his singing. Kind of like a young rod Stewart or Paul Rodgers.
They did a couple of covers. It was only a short session, two or three songs, then it was out with the equipment and off home. I don’t think they did anything original. It did sound great together, the three of them.
Ian Paice:
It was meant to be a free-flowing kind of thing. It never got off the ground mainly because Phil wasn’t really a good enough bassist yet.
He had the voice, but learning to play bass well takes time. And for a thing like that to work, all three players need to be at a certain level. [In 1972] Phil just wasn’t there yet.

October 6th, 2012 at 19:49Maybe it would have worked, maybe not. The so called super group ‘thing’ rarely does, but they are great musicians indeed, so it makes you ponder the unthinkable! Crap name though, couldn’t they come up with anything better? If that was what is ‘was’ going to be called that is! Ho Hum!

October 9th, 2012 at 11:22It’s a pity I didnt work out….Even a mini tour by the 3 masters would have been Awesome…It didnt work because Phil’s bass playing was up to scratch…You have to remember Phil wasnt playing that long and Lizzy were only starting out and hadn’t made a break through yet…Ritchie and Ian loved Phil’s vocals and as paicey said once that they went along to see Lizzy one time and were amazed with Phil’s vocals and never concentrated on his bass playing…its a great Rock ‘N’ Roll that sadly never happened…Word going around that the track Giutar Job by Ritchie which Is available on a Japanese issue comp called best tracks is from the babyface sessions….The mystery continues
