Studio Concerto — first review
Andreas Thul has written a review of the studio recording of Jon Lord’s Concerto For Group and Orchestra which will be released on September 28. The review is in German. If you understand the language, you can read it in his blog. And if you don’t, you can always try your luck with the automated translation to get the gist (in short: it’s rather good).

It might be so that in future times I ll embrace certain parts of it.
But, listening to it twice……
I was very open.
But in general I feel that he better had worked on ” other unknown pieces Paul mann is referring to” in the last days of his life.
We listened ” 2012″ and afterwards we succumbed to put on the 1969 DVD disc to lift our spirits again.
1969 is UNBEATABLE!
Not 1 second I felt something with the guitarsolo’s I always feel when Ritchie plays them.Goosebumbs, no way!
Dickinson to me was the best choice , why he always gets connected with Gillan is a mystery to me. He always reminds me more of David Byron. Which is a plus ofcourse in itself.
Reading that the recordings of Dickinsons several steps up to the final results are now lost.
Paul Mann says he wished he had saved them!!! but did not loose the several solo’s Steve made!!!
Ofcourse the ” 2012″ recording is good, it bloody ought to be anno 2012.
But we all know by several DP products of late are destroyed to mediocre passionless efforts while Concerto 69(Amongst others) still sounds fabulous to us.
What now can we expext ?
Compositions made by Jon but played by Don and Steve?!

Jon Lord was a great man, but his decisions ……
Personally I feel he should have quit DP earlier so that we could have had more of his great works, which he made a few since Pictured Within.
Skip 97 – 2002.
He could have made so much.
Concerto 69 he already had done. A timeless production, which I ll never get bored of.
Btw, how shocking it was to hear Ian Gillans old voice of way back again.
I did not listen to it for some time, one does have periods like that, and it completely grasped me.
What a voice, what an emotion.
It might be so that he delivered the lyrics just in time before the performance but …does it get any better than that delivery?
We treated ourselves with Garth Rocket and the Moonshiners DVD shortly after that.
One of those almost perfect Gillan moments.
I m not exactly fond of No More Cane On The Brazos, it at least fell out of place in the set IMHO.
It might have been an attempt, like Robert Plant so fanatically did, to embrace more than ” just rock and Roll” into his oeuvre.

October 15th, 2012 at 19:14@2 “No More Cane On The Brazos” is in my opinion one if the greatest things Gillan ever sang, both studio and live versions (the acoustic one too)…and yes I would have preferred to listen to something different (like the above mentioned duo album) but I totally respect Jon Lord decision…and the result is wonderful even if inferior to the Deep purple version (always my opinion)…and I would add that Paul Mann seems really a great person and a joy to work with…
Thanks Roberto for the kind remarks. Re the comments in No.2 above – can’t please everyone I guess. But I should make clear that all the out-takes are undoubtedly archived somewhere. Bruce’s takes aren’t ‘lost’, it’s just that I don’t have them. Whereas the stuff of Steve’s, and one or two others, is still hanging around in my computer. About releasing out-takes at some point in future, all I’d say is that generally they were out-takes for a good reason: i.e. they aren’t as good as the ones on the album. The exception was Steve’s three versions of the third movement, all of which were releasable. Unfortunately the same can’t really be said for everything that went on the cutting-room floor.

@5 I was referring to the Toolbox tour one…I love each version of this song…maybe my favourite is the one from Gillan live 1990 (the dvd version) of the Naked Thunder tour but I love them all…
