Hughes points finger at Ritchie

Glenn Hughes, image from F.U.N.K. presskit

Glenn “I don’t wanna live in the past” Hughes raised the issue of Mk.3 reunion once again in an interview to the Cleveland CBS affiliate radio WCNX. And he is pointing finger at Blackmore’s camp for it not happening:

Jon, David and I were trying to get it together. […] We couldn’t get ahold of [Ritchie]. We sent carrier pigeons, and the Pony Express. But nobody at ‘Castle Blackmore’ answered the door. It wasn’t meant to be.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we did something, David and I. Something might pop its head in the next two years.

Is there a specific project in mind?

No! (But) David and I have talked about this weekly since Jon died. How we can do something to keep the flame burning. But we don’t want to hinder the heritage of the band, some bands get back together and sound bloody awful. It’s the 40th anniversary of Burn next year. I’m not giving you a hint to something that’s gonna happen, but you just never know.

yes, you should have done this reunion in 2003…Jon was out of Deep Purple and David still had a decent voice (talking about just of the high vocals notes)…but Ritchie had that woman around him…

    Wiktor says:

Ritchie Blackmore knows better than to get involved with Glenn “I dont wanna live in the past” Hughes…. I mean, Blackmore left Purple because of Hughes for crying out loud!

    byron says:

Glenn feels a little bit bitter hese days…
It would be easy for Ritchie to take the money and play SOTW once again
But listening to Glenn”me and my ego’ Hughes screaming on Burn was certainly the last thing in his mind.
A blues album with Coverdale or some orchestral work with Jon would have benn so much better

It doesn’t take the proverbial rocket scientist to realise that Blackmore would NEVER entertain a supposed MK3 reunion!
All this garbage talk is just that from Hughes. There is no way I would bother watching this video interview or any other with him.
The fact that I have read this tit bit is because he annoys me with the crap never going to happen MK3 ‘remember us’ reunion!
I know I shouldn’t even read that little bit, but I suppose any publicity is good publicity in his book, but alas for us, it is the opposite! Fade away please!

Yeah!! That Mk III reunion would have been great!!! But again..Ritchie in his medieval planet prevented that!!! And mostle because of “that woman”. Ritchie, bring back Rainbow, and stop yer minstrel rubbish!!!!

it will be nice to see something happening with Ritchie involved in it,but I know it won’t happen,Ritchie is well past Rock music and the past…but then again you never know.

No thanks! Impossible without the great Jon Lord.

No Ritchie, No Little Ian and now (SADLY) No Lordy..WHAT’S THE POINT?

I would like to get a confirmation from Coverdale of his supposed enthusiasm for a MkIII re-union. He hasn’t sounded interested as far as I know and anything the self-proclaimed “voice of rock” says, utters and sings I tend to take with a generous serving of salt.

And in any case, Coverdale/Hughes do not a reunion make:

Dear Jon Lord has sadly passed away and would have to be replaced which is hardly possible for the purposes of this reunion concept (or for any purposes, really). For me a MkIII reunion is impossible without Jon Lord.

Giving a reunion sans Lord a chance: Blackmore is hardly interested, having moved on in a big way and even if they managed to get him on board would always be incomplete without Ian Paice who is pounding away, quite happily it seems, in the real (oh yes I did) Deep Purple.

The odds of a MkIII reunion appear quite slim.

    Ron Huther says:

When asked about a Glen Hughes wanting to see him back stage, Blackmore said it best….”Glen Who?”

Glen, you are a great singer…really great. But you are a whackadoo too. A genius yes, but a whackadoo for sure. But in Blackmore’s eyes you are a pimple on the end of his ass. He made two albums with you and hated the last one so much he quit the band he founded that was 2 years removed from being the biggest band in the world and was still in top 5. When he reformed such band he did not ask, “where’s Glen?” When they fired Gillan, did he hire Glen? Has blackmore ever stated he wanted to play with Glen Hughes again? No! Leave Ritchie alone, he is not interested and will never play with Glen Highes again. I do hope he does one last rock album and world tour…he must have a libraryu of classic rock licks that he has since Stranger in Us All.

Do it before it’s too late. Tell Coverdale to get with it! Hughes and Coverdale should realize that the fans will always have an opinion … some will like it and some will not. Do it anyway. Or stop talking about it.

I am so tired of the constant whining by Glenn Hughes. Without Blackmore or Bonammassa this guy is playing bars. Yes Burn was a fabulous album, but Ritchies riffs made the tunes as always. Glenn should go back to playing with JLT and call themselves The Egotystical Whiners.

    Anthony says:

Blackers is so set in his ways now and theres’ no chance of him going back into the rock arena and even if he did it will certainly not contain Glenn Hughes and his ego. I agree with a lot of people here that Blackers has been constrained in some way by his wife and Blackmore’s Night management but at the end of the day he is doing what he enjoys ( I guess ) and to my ears anyway is still producing fabulous guitar artistry and music of the highest calibre.

On another point I feel Burn is really up there with Machine Head as Purpl’e best album. Its NOT Hughes’ album but has Blackers written all over it…blame ego Hughes for ruining everything and going all funky..though we could even blame Blackers for hiring him in the first place though!!! ( Thats another issue )

    George Fotis says:

They should have a short tour for a few months, & get Don Airey on the keyboards . I think it would work well, Ritchie knows him from Rainbow , so he shouldn’t be a problem. But he does get in funny moods , like on that Come Hell Or High Water dvd. So there is hardley a chance. Or why not do a Burn tour , with Steve Morse, David, Glenn, Ian P , and Don . Steve is a fantastic guitarist he would sound very good !

@13 Amen to that man ! him and JLT are good singers but annoying little whiners !

All I know is that everytime Blackmore’s Night plays “Soldier of Fortune” on stage and on disc, they give credit to David Coverdale…fortunately they give no credit to Glenn Hughes…actually, the only credit Blackmore could give the male-looking-little-old-lady was for making Blackmore quit Deep Purple.

Maybe someday Hughes will get it that he is an insignificant part of Deep Purple.

  20. 20
    al says:

at19 Hughes didn’t write that one so he cannot get any credits ! the song was Blackmore/Coverdale.

Without jon it will not be in Deep purple again.
Long live ritchie and Deep purple.

Could theNo Ritchie, No Jon= No Reunion folks please explain the current line up of Purple to me, thanks….

    Ron says:

Blackmore will never work with guys like Coverdale or Hughes. On Coverdale, he’s just too big of a star. Him and Blackmore would be killing each other ala Gillan blackmore. I love David but my take is blackmore would comment on the voice as well. On hughes, there is even less of a chance at collaboration.

So here is an idea. Call the band D-3. Hughes, Paice and Coverdale. This pays hommage to MK3 and 3 purple members – D3. Don’t use Don Airey….use the guy from BCC. On guitar, ask Malsteem – I bet he jumps at it. Do one album. World tour promoting new album with set list including Burn, Sail Away, Mistreated, lay Down, Might Just… Soldier of Fortune, stormbringer with killer versions of getting tighter, smoke and highway as encores. Throw in two or three new ones and this would be a complete set.

That would be insane! My dream anyway.

    john says:

dear Glenn please you can still get Don Airey on Keyboard and Ian Paice to join the MK III Reunion. Lord has passed away for 2 months ago.

Steve Morse on Guitar for MK III Reunion ??? no hmmh…. that must be Blackmore

    Ron says:

@ 24….Paice yes but Steve Morse and Airey hell no. That would never happen, but if it did it would be boring. DC, IP and GH with two phenoms (keys and guitar) would be great. But we are just dreaming…

    @ 13, 14 & 20:
that’s not the whole story: Glenn was not credited for songwriting due to contractual reasons. when you take a closer look to the “30th anniversary edition” of “Burn” you’ll find his name on 5 of the original 8 tracks: Burn, Might Just Take Your Life, Lay Down Stay Down, You Fool No One & What’s Going On Here – all of them written by the band (Mk3).
“Blackmore castle” – Glenn hit the spot!
my opinion on Glenns music: he did some really fine music from the 90s on, but some of the changes were not good. his collaboration with Tony Iommi was very interesting, but not half as good as “Seventh Star”. Glenn & Joe – two former DP-members “celebrating” their history: why not? you don’ like it? well, DON’T LISTEN TO IT!
Glenn with Chad Smith – perfect rhythm section! funky! …but the song writing sadly didn’t catch with their musical ability.
Glenn is still one of the best singers in rock/metal!
“Black Country” is one of my faves!
i’m not trying to convince anybody – it’s just my humble taste.
