Machine Head 40th anniversary box set
Deep Purple (Overseas) and EMI have announced a 40th anniversary box set edition of the Machine Head, to be released on October 8, 2012 (in Europe, presumably). This five discs special edition will be accompanied with illustrated 60 page hardback booklet.
Contents of the box set include:
- CD1: original album 2012 remaster
- CD2: 1997 remix by Roger Glover
- CD3: original album quad SQ mix in stereo (2012 remaster)
- CD4: In Concert ’72 – 2012 remix (recorded live at Paris Theatre, London 9th March 1972)
- CD5: 2012 high resolution remaster and surround mix (DVD)
Booklet features:
- Detailed essays from original bassist Roger Glover and Mojo magazine editor Phil Alexander
- Quotations from Deep Purple fans Mikael Akerfelt, Luke Morley, Sebastian Vettel, Eddie Jordan, Brian Tatler, Janick Gers and Peter Hook.
- An interview with famed photographer Didi Zill, whose photos of the legendary recording sessions in Switzerland illustrate the booklet.
Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing
I don’t quite see the point in releasing all this stuff again, but…..that’s just me I guess!?!

Hate to quote “how many more times”, well i guess it had to happen, i remember way back in ’71 when the original came out on “vinyl” then over the years more “mixes” later, special editions, and now we get the “ultimate” edition, to me on a personal level it would have to rate one of the top 10 hard rock albums of all time? One thing i have noticed with many artists over the past few years, everyone seems to jumping on the bandwagon. The question is entirely up to you yes or no?

August 8th, 2012 at 07:25Bought the Deep Purple – Machine Head (DVD Audio) 10 years ago. If this is the same as CD5 it would be worth it alopne. The DVD Audio version is easily the best sound experience. Lost the DVD Audio, it would be great with a normal DVD. 🙂

I am a bit fed up with this and luckily i kept all my vinyl records and am getting more and more back to the real analog stuff. What about new Made In Japan 40th anniversary set, compelting all three shows and as announced some time ago will also be released as 6 LP set.

I thought it would include a recording of the tour in the city of Paris : )
I took a quick look in my map with 1972 boots I recently gathered from The Clock Went Backwards Again, Paris is not there!!!!
They ve toured extensively in those years.
Hopefully other recording will come on my way as well.
I ll have to look up if they did gig in Paris in 1972.
As far as I know Belgium and Holland were not on the tourlist.
The recording I recently heard from Amsterdam 1973 sounds AWFUL.
But weird to hear because of the story behind it.
I always thought they only played a few songs.
They stopped while doing Space Trucking. And as we know that’s quite a long way into the set.

This looks great. In Concert was one of my first DP albums and I will like to hear the ’72 part remastered. It will also be interesting to compare the new 2012 surround mix with the older SACD version. Can’t Wait!

The new In Concert mix and the Surround DVD are what’s most interesting here, but I agree with purpledaniel, the rehearsals, or perhaps even demos, would have been a no brainer for a sixth disc.

A REMIX of the In Concert albums are very welcome, considering the job they did on Live On Stockholm 1970.
That was a vast improvement.
I wish had the equipment to fully appreciate certain remixes of MH but……..
So, I m not sure if I ll buy it or download just the remixed Paris Theatre gig.

All I know is this: I’ll buy it for the booklet.
August 8th, 2012 at 20:07The In Concert portion is already released in half form on hybrid disc, it will be no improvement from that and it made very little difference in sound to my ears to want to really listen to the whole thing like that, but if they did a better job it might suffice.
Priest, read my comments, the In Concert portion is surround sound. That was never done to Stockholm.
The bottom line is there isn’t hardly anything new here, but that is by far not the point at all. The point is to put them all in one nice box and celebrate the anniversary, even though it is quite late, which I’m sure had to do with the usual red tape factors. I’m behind this, the Re-Machined I am not, it’s nothing but a support joke to me. and I would drop a penny for that.(I have at least three of the quad mixes that aren’t offered here, the original DVD-A, the DTS from DVD-A and the transfered quad-8track to DVD versions) So for a completist this doesn’t even begin to reach the mark, but again it is not the point.

August 12th, 2012 at 20:09Agree with many people here. yet another repackaging with no real sense behind it. The only way of repackaging that I would accept (and nobody did this excersise before) – to have a whatever remastered version and original version (how it sounded on vinil – a direct analog-to-digital transfer). Let people choose what they want to listen to. To me all these remasters are for young ears who are used to compressed sound. But in reality this music was not recorded like this back then….it sounded deeper, without any treble. Compare a standard first late 80-s CDs made without any sound processing and any re-master. These are two different sounds and two different groups. I prefer not modern but original sounding. Somebody enjoys clarity of sound and all this pin drops (although they were not there then!). Therefore ideal solution is to have both as a set so people can compare.

August 14th, 2012 at 02:10Any song will be worst than the original one…that’s what most of the time happen with covers (demonstrated even by ‘Highway star’ and ‘When a blind men cries’ covers of this compilation) but it’s alwyas a pleasure to see some Purple recognizement….

August 15th, 2012 at 19:06Not sure I would throw down at ‘Cover vs. Original’ with a blanket statement that the original is always better. Purple’s first 3 albums were covered with covers and many of which are much better than the original. Hush, Hey Joe, Kentucky Woman. Yeah I know, that’s because Purple did it…..There are many others outside the Purple realm that follow suit also….”Live and let Die” where G&R covered the McCartney hit and totally improved upon it.
Now, better or worst isn’t even the issue with Tribute albums. It’s musicians paying homage to songs that are worthy of revisiting and enjoying playing. Usually giving the song their own spin or interpretation, making it something worth listening to for a little different perspective. It would be pointless to cover the song note for note. Judging the cover version based on whether it isn’t as good as the original is also pointless. But as with any song, everyone has a different ear and taste, therefore some may actually prefer one to the other and in all actuality, neither would be wrong.

August 17th, 2012 at 05:32Waste of time and money. Another Purple rip off. This is getting as bad as the 1977-80 period where it was all crap comps of no substance. C’mon how about some unreleased live stuff from the period. I have plenty of boots that are up to sctatch for fans, so surely somebody at EMI could think outside of the box for once. Hang on, they got rid of all people that used to think!

If you are really fan you must have all publications of Deep Purple!
I have seen band 16 times on stage, but is not enough! Of course there are many good band in the wolrd but one is only one!!
December 1st, 2012 at 21:14Heard this at a mates place. Nothing new except the quad mixes, whic aren’t in tha same league as the RG remixed DVD-A 5.1 release that came out at the same time as the 25th anniversary 2-disc. Now that rocks!!!
