Steve Morse: “We’re doing what we do”
Steve Morse gave a brief interview to the New Jersey’s Star-Ledger:
This one isn’t going to be orchestra-based so much as: It’s the rock band Deep Purple playing, with strings and horns being added for some color textures.
We’re not going to change the songs — I mean, there’ll be a few little cameos and features — but the basic idea of the show is: We’re doing what we do, and having more texture where it’s appropriate.

June 11th, 2011 at 15:56What a waste of money!!! The Boston gig was ok but not anything special. I expected more because of the orchestra and was severly disappointed. In most songs, you could not even hear the orchestra. I was in the very front and most of them were bored and not playing during most of the songs. I think they rented the musicans from the Bently school of music down the street.
I do have to give credit the DP management in sucking our money out from our pockets and into theirs. If you are only going to go because it is a different DP gig, then it is best to stay home and rent a movie.
Overall, not a good experience. This is my last DP concert. I have already seen them about 1/2 dozen times over the last 20 years. I will only go again if they get David to be singer again. This was the real DP

Purple should bring back “Wring That Neck” and “The Mule”. “wring That neck” sounded really good on the “Concero Tour” and the riff to “The Mule” is perfect for a horn section.

Just saw DP last night in AC New Jersey Tropicana. Wow-what a show. Warm up band had some orignal Boston members guitarist/drummer and J. Geils/Peter Wolf bassist. They were loud and pretty decent-I was worried they would trump my DP idols. Wow–DP on all cylinders and louder than ever–the sold out show was awesome. Folks ranged from teenie boppers to us geritol drinkers–simply amazing. The fans had a great time–if any DP member reads this site–I thank you for a great concert in Atlantic City.

June 13th, 2011 at 21:34@8 I didn’t hear any booing from that clip. I heard some people yell WOOOOO!!!I know because I heard my voice at the beginning of the clip. Wow that place picks up every sound. I was slightly right front row center stage!! My review of the show. It is Deep Purple with a symphony playing with them. They are filler add a bit of texture to their sound. The band was spot on as usual. Gillan started rough but came through like a pro towards the end. I don’t expect much from him @ 65 like everyone else on this site. The crowd the the show and my friends who are casual Purple fans said it was good, not great. Compared to Supertramp last night they ROCKED!! I don’t care what anyone says, PLAY YOUR FREAKIN’ HITS!!! Noone has seen you for years…THis goes to Supertramp whose show I could have slept throught he first 45 minutes of… Deep Purple gives the people what they want.
June 13th, 2011 at 22:17Iam a 4th genaration fan went to the june 8 show in hartford it was my 72nd show and my grandsons 2nd show while it wasnt the best show Ive seen my grandson had a fantastic time we had front row seats he sang along with every song. being a fan for so long it was nice michael rockin along to every song steve took the time between songs and give mike a guitar pick and called roger over with a pick and they both gave him a high 5!! to see the smile on his face was priceless!! after goin backstage and spending with Roger,Steve and Don I came to understand its been a wonderful ride that it will come to an end at some point. the best show was definetly was the machine head/banannas tour at the Beacon theater in NY.all the best to all my fellow fans!!

June 14th, 2011 at 02:56@1 no surprises on the set list. The venue was packed and had limited space to get up and jam with the band. That said-the crowd found room to inter-act-especially up front. The age of the crowd and courteous manner not to block the view of the person behind you also was a reason for a subdued audiance-not the lack of any performance by the band. I will say it again-great time-great show.

Without Ritchie Blackmore there is no more Deep Purple! He and Jon Lord started Deep Purple. There is only one original memeber left and that is Ian Paice. The new Deep Purple can’t write and have no hit songs. When Ritchie was in the band and wrote all songs they had hit songs! It’s plain and simple! If the new Deep Purple says that is not true, Well, How come you have no new hit songs like in the old days then when Ritchie aws in the band? It doesn’t matter what band Ritchie is in, He can write hit songs and he never puts out crap music and doesn’t need anybody to lean on and ask for help! He can play soft or loud and its all good! If Roger can write hit songs, Why doesn’t he? I think Deep Purple should at least have 3 original members in the band to call themselves Deep Purple! That’s what I think!!!!

June 15th, 2011 at 20:20@20. Name a band thats been around 40 years that is still producing quality music. The Stones aren’t, U2 aren’t after 30 years, neither is Metallica or Iron Maiden. Look at the crap Pearl Jam writes these days compared to 20 years ago. Although some would say their music was crap from day one ( I disagree). It just doen’t happen.Bands do not consistantly produce top music year after year

I think IMHO that Perpendicular matches & betters anything written on HOBL and don’t get me wound up with the shit we had to put up with on Slaves & Masters with Blackmore’s love child on vocals(in jest).
If Deep Purple don’t exist anymore without Blackmore why then do you continue to visit this site.
Everyone has an opinion. That’s what makes the world go round. But not everything is black & white. There are shades of gray. On this occasion I just disagree with your black & white theory on the subject.

@20 & 21 I didnt realise Blackmore was a one man band back in his DP days. Responsible for all the music and all the song writing! What a revelation!

I have the impression that you and some others here on board think they represent everyone when they diminish what DP 5 did.: )
The albums had its flaws but due to the core(Lord/Blackers/Paicey) still intact plus some great killertracks it was more DP than what happened after Purpendicular.
After that album they never made a good/succesfull album again.
The best thing about PURPENDICULAR and the tour was the great sound of Roger and Paicey, more Lord.
HOBL was indeed a album that did not get down very well.
Due to too modern production(Thanx Roger : ( )and Paicey playing like a drumcomputer, not enough Lord and Blackmore playing like he wanted to be something else.
Apart from 2 or tracks the album has great tracks never completely used to their potential live.
And like Simon Robinson of DPAS says about the nonsense argument the band is using(There is no money in releasing cds):
Why then did AC /DC release Black Ice and sold so much?

The last HIT Purple had was ‘Woman from Tokyo’, in 1973. That was the end of their heyday. Only Hush, SOTW, Highway Star and WFT are ever played on the Classic Rock stations…..Period. All from 1973 and before. That doesn’t mean the music that came later wasn’t as good or better, it just means the Hit Factory didn’t recognize their newer music, and still don’t. Nothing gets airplay from Burn, Stormbringer, Perfect Strangers, HOBL, S&M, or Battle Rages On. I suppose that means these albums are all inferior. These are all Blackmore albums. Well?
The music industry has changed so much and unless the promoters change along with it, they wind up being left by the wayside. Many of the great Classic bands are still putting out some great music, but you would never know it by listening to the Radio. Uriah Heep, Foreigner, Queen with Paul Rogers, Wishbone Ash, etc. All of which get their same old songs from the 70’s being played, but nothing from the later albums or present. So basically, MK7/8 albums fair the same fate. In Purple’s case, they have always been cursed with lack of proper promotion and celebrity exposure. This has done permanent damage to their Hit issue and present status in the realm of current music being heard on the radio.

If we follow that route we have almost everything of BURN, Stormbringer and Soldier of fortune, several tracks of CTTB, Perfect Strangers, several tracks on PS, HOBL, S & M(….), TBRO.
Some tracks on Purpendicular are on the verge of “classic” like Ted, Hey Cisco, Rosa s Cantina.
Abandon, mmmmmh, dont think so.
Bananas and ROTD have both promising tracks but not real classics.
I like Sun Goes Down too but is as timeless as Dead Or Alive, Strangeways and Bas Attitude?
Dont forget my first sentence.
Keep hold on that thought.

June 22nd, 2011 at 22:21Hit songs means Hit songs. You can read into it whatever you want in order to support your blind worship. I responded to Jim and what he wrote. You as usual jump in and try and spin the topic towards your narrow view. Classics and Hits are 2 different things. Your interpretation of a Classic will be different from the next guy. Hits are recorded in the archives with an actual number given regarding it’s placement in the Hit status.
