Phoenix Rising details
The Mk.4 release Phoenix Rising which is due on May 20 in Europe will be released in the following package formats:
- DVD+CD in DVD-style digipak
- CD+DVD in CD-style jewel case
- Blue-ray
- 2LP+DVD
- Audio CD separately (not confirmed by the label, but listed on Amazon)

The DVD will be region coded 2. We are being assured that US, Japanese and Australian releases are “on track”.
Blue-ray
The blue-ray disc will contain everything that is on the DVD and CD. Video will be in 1080/23.976 16:9 format. The disc will be region coded A, B, C (i.e. the whole world). If you live outside Europe and do not want to wait for a local release, this is the format to go for.
Artwork
16 page booklet with liner notes by Simon Robinson and Jerry Bloom.
The DVD+CD package (the one in digipak) will include two bonus “collectors’ booklets”:
- miniature reproduction of an original Deep Purple 1976 magazine (28 pages)
- 36 pages of rare photos, original vintage Deep Purple articles and never before seen pictures
The 28 page booklet is exclusive for the DVD+CD digipak package. Contents of the 36 page booklet will be printed on the inner sleeves of the double LP. The CD+DVD jewel case and blue-ray packages will include only the regular 16-page booklet.
Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing

That might me lure into buying this, plus ofcourse the remix treatment of the VIDEO stuff from Japan.
Question is : Does that differ still compared to ” This Time Around”, which after all was already a great improvement soundwise.

#11 just get yourself an all region player as i myself got tired of dealing with the format issues. i have one for the TV and a portable all region player as well. it cost about as much as buying one concert ticket these days! looking forward to the 1975 sunbury footage! if they do like they did with the “made in japan” footage and just show a 10 second clip i will be truly pissed!

Also, DVD-A format was dropped years ago and replaced by the DTS – DVD and CD audio formats, no longer existing outside of DIY blank burning.(if you can even find existing compatible burning software)
May 1st, 2011 at 17:06#14#15 Sure I would do if I only had the chance! Unfortunately our stupid government has imposed us huge import taxes only to protect a local deteriorated industry. The change rate against € is 6 to one, so we have to pay 6 times more expensive a european dvd, plus 50% customs rights. Again, our stupid goverment has provoked that dvd players in Argentina are only region4 NTSC, and buying an all region player would imply the same factors as the dvd disc. I´m absolutely furious that I can´t get this long awaited dvd because it will be released in PAL region2. USA release, if happens, is a long way comming.

Big let on the CD, material is already out there, why reissue it??. The DVD, not really sure why we get the demise of MK2, the making of Burn and Stormbringer on a material pertaining to be about MK4, a quick chat is all that needed to bring us on to to it, but the fans already know the story anyway, what would have been better is getting “The world at large” film or more of the Indonesia conceret onto the DVD/Bluray, or is this yet another money making venture from the record company and botch job. Very little positive really to say except it is good that there is some MK4 material finally coming out

May 14th, 2011 at 20:30Well, here we are then and we can practically repeat almost everything we said about the “History, Hits and Highlights” DVD.
Decent to excellent footage spoiled somewhat by a careless (at best) packaging policy which automatically arouses suspicions of rip-off – or to put it mildly:
a salami slice selling strategy.
The “HHAH” DVD already featured 2 songs from Tokyo 1975
So now we get the 3 other songs thrown in.
The CD contains material that was released before on Last Concert in Japan, Wings Of a Russian Foxbat/King Biscuit (the latter being rerereleased only last year with yet another remastering). And it features 3 songs that are also on the video (supposedly the same versions).
And it doesn’t cover a whole concert either, so this one is nothing more than a nice extra.
Which leaves the documentary and the extras the only real selling point for me – but also here I worry that a great part of it has already been seen on “HHAH”.
At least this one seems to correct the very superficial History part on “HHAH”.
As a whole, you now have two DVD releases within two years which both are a somewhat strange brew out of live footage, history and documentary.
In my opinion it would have been far better to create two different packages about the first 8 years of the band:
One with only live (or playback..) footage without any interviews and history bits but including the complete Tokyio footage
– and one history/documentary (including the Leeds Polytechnic interviews and the New Zealand part and maybe also a few snippets from Gillan’s and Lord’s documentary DVDs.)
But maybe people feared that such clearcut products wouldn’t sell well enough.
I wonder how they’re going to combine the 28 minutes of film from Japan 1972 when they’re finished polishing them (hey! the Copenhagen video release was already 5 years ago, why not use parts of that?….).
May 18th, 2011 at 12:49Would have liked it , if they interviewed Ian Paice & David as they were in the band to. It’s alway’s Jon Lord all the time, why release tracks that have already been released that’s stupid. All i wanted is just a regualar dvd of Rises Over Japan with nothing else, probabley would be cheaper to.
