Steve Morse on Iron City Rocks
Pittsburgh’s online outlet Iron City Rocks has an extended interview with Steve Morse which he gave in early December while being on tour in Southern France. The interview covers a lot of ground — from Dixie Grits — to Deep Purple — to Angelfire.
In the groundbreaking news department, Steve said that Deep Purple have a “writing session” booked at a Spanish studio some time in March, between Mexican and Russian dates.

January 4th, 2011 at 22:28I think a writing session will at least have them going into the studio with some finished ideas in tow, unlike the last two albums where they spent just five or six weeks writing and recording, having brought nothing with them to the party. Hey, this way they can party even more because they’ll already have a jump on things and be able to cut out some of the writing portion of the “party.” -‘ard rock? What is ROTD, Cajun music or something?

You will trash it while they are in process of recording it, [unless Ritchie rejoins the band and Steve puts on the tights and goofy hat between now and then], then you will pre-order it well in advance, listen to it 30 times, love it, and then get on the website and talk about how bad Steve Morse is and what a wanker Ritchie is for playing that “mandolin” music. If the inspiration comes from sangria, the Sun, the moon, Pluto, Uranus, or your anus, so be it. Just give me a new collection of songs and I for one will be happy as a 3 pecker billy goat at a sheep farm.

January 7th, 2011 at 01:32Let’s not get excited…it’s just a writing session. However, I agree with CG (#7) that it is much better to go into the studio prepared than to hope something happens spontaneously.
I also agree with Jeff (#6) as well–a return to hard rock–that is, a little more toward In Rock with distorted Hammond, screaming guitars and all the VUs pegged.

I could never imagine that musicians, who’re on stage for 40 years could still deliver such a masterpiece!

Well, if THAT was a masterpiece, maybe they indeed should leave it at that.
No better way to say goodbye than on riding the high wave, not?
I always noticed the potential(….)grandness in certain tracks on ROTD, I ll never say its all bollocks.
But espescially on Before Time Began and Clearly Quite Absurd(the last one more a Gillan solo track IMHO)I feel not everything , being potentially there, was done.
Its ALMOST like with Perfect Strangers.
In that song the Hammondsolo, done live but not on the album, would have cemented it completely.
Before I forget…..
The Live ending, appearantly later on constructed, should be on it too.
There are ofcourse countless examples of that.
Why on earth fade a good song on a moment WE want to hear it last longer?!
Ofcourse I could listen to HardLoving Man forever but there the song had proper ending and beginning.
I agree ROTH is a “rockalbum” but the agressiveness, the so called volatility is really not there.
It was kinda endearing to see certain older men becoming mild, including my Dad,…..
But THIS MUSIC can not grab you by the throat doing such a sweet approach.
IT NEEDS ENERGY, POWER, DRAMA, EXITEMENT, AGRESSION….
The mellowness on later DP albums :
Thats not aging wine, thats just being too soft or underproduced, whatever.
And George, dont get me started with your comparisons with those 4 albums.

HOBL, so many times dismissed, has several classics like Strangeways, Bad Attitude, Dead Or Alive, The Unwritten Law.
I think you like the Gillan song, or not? Mitzi Dupree that is.

January 10th, 2011 at 14:45All in all, this is a Good News Topic. How accurate Steve’s description truly is hear remains to be seen, but it sounds good all the same.
Regarding the new ‘Complaint’ from the Whiners…regarding ROTD being Not a Hard Rock Album….WHAT??? You truly ARE MAD!
There are a variety of styles of tunes on this record, and they All center around a Hard Rock attitude. As with All Purple albums, there are a couple that lean a little mellower than others but the overall feel is a hardrock album. The Only Purple album that is 100% HARD, is “In Rock”, which actually leans more toward Heavy Metal. Every other album has it’s ‘variety with lighter side tunes’ but nowhere near as hard as In Rock. They have always maintained they are a Rock Band, not a Metal band. Rock is a broad title that has many facets and really can’t be pigeon holed into a specific sound. Bad Company is classified as Hard Rock…..hello?????
Over the years they have offered many songs that lean toward the lighter side of Rock. “Wasted Sunsets”, “Anyone’s Daughter”, “Holy Man”, “Love Conquers All”, “Soldier of Fortune”, etc….
That is the beauty of this band. They do give a huge variety of music for the Fans to enjoy. Unfortunately, it is apparent that those whom call themselves Fans are probably who will put an end to Purple. If I was a member of Deep Purple, and took what all of you chronic complainers were constantly bitching about, I would have packed it in long ago. Oh I forgot. Thank God there are a lot more folks out there than the Complainer that keep our heroes alive and kicking out some fantastic music still to this day….

January 10th, 2011 at 21:35Purpendicular proved that Deep Purple is capable of producing a stellar album that is not necessarily tinged with high volume, wicked screams and saturated tape volume. However, Purpendicular is not a sound for which Deep Purple is commonly known.
Rapture of the Deep contains stellar moments, but is “only” a good album–miles ahead of the long-awaited but somewhat disappointing Bananas.
I recently put the best of the two albums together. What came out was a VERY good album with all the riffy songs sans the pop elements–and George (#12) would be happy to know that “When Time Began” made the cut to close it all out.
With all the emphasis on solo projects, the hope is that the suggested album will lack the flavor of the individual members and come together has a DEEP PURPLE album, with all of the characterstics that the name implies–whatever that may mean.
As for a title…

Priest’s dilemma is – He wants to like DP, buts thats betraying Blackmore – He wants to like Gillan, but thats betraying Blackmore – He wants to like Morse, but thats betraying Blackmore………….Can you see the theme?
I know most of us (apart from the FEW) would give a new album a chance – because I guess the reason for this website is so we can appreciate the band.
