Concerto’99 on vinyl
Concerto’99 officially known as Deep Purple In Concert with the London Symphony Orchestra Live at the Royal Albert Hall has just been released on vinyl by a boutique label Night of the Vinyl Dead. The release is said to be limited to 500 copies and contains the album spread over no less than 4 LPs with colored innersleeve and inlay.

Bravo to these dedicated propagators of analogue media – knowing the costs involved in licensing, mastering, pressing and distribution, they are doing both the music and it’s fans a great service.

December 20th, 2010 at 12:05As far as I remember; All songs were not recorded at the RAH in ’99 because of union rules regarding the orchestra. I even remember the camera men leaving the hall for some songs for the same reason.

All songs were audio recorded, but not all were filmed. Night Meets Light was not included in the first edition of the 2disc CD, but it was included in the Tour Edition released a few monyhs later. So the song has been on disc, on sale, for all to listen to.

December 20th, 2010 at 12:40I’m not a vinyl collector myself but think it’s great these recordings – and increasingly many others – are made available for those that are. That said there’s nothing here – or on the website – that states that the pressing is a AAA recording. AAA = Analogue recorded, Analogue mixed & Analogue mastered. In other words this could just be a digital transfer to vinyl. If this is the case the best one can hope for is that it sounds as good as the CD equivalent – possibly it may sound different because of the analogue delivery but that doesn’t mean it will sound any better by definition of the analogue delivery.
If it’s being produced simply because there are people who still love to buy vinyl then that’s great and I wish you all the best but don’t run away with the illusion that just because it’s on vinyl it MUST sound better.

Great to have the chance to buy it, and I did yesterday. Even if it doesn’t have the complete concert it will be a gem in my cabinet.
I never understand why people are complaining. Be glad that it is released on vinyl. 4 LP discs. That’s great.

Don’t worry Pete. This album was recorded in 1999. Six years after Ritchie left the band. Whether the vinyl edition will or won’t include Night Meets Light it will not have any “usual Blackmore’s Night-mare sleeping music” on it.

I have no interest in vinyl releases.
However, I understand the collectors’ interests from a hobbyist’s standpoint–particularly the feel of the medium and the extra room for photographs (I miss that). In addition, I am pro-anything that keeps the Purple name in the news, particularly in light of the fact that nothing new will be coming anytime soon.
As music becomes more processed, digitized and homogenized, I believe that analogue will make a comeback at some point. Some of the music is starting to sound very sterile. I’m not sure what format it will take, but continuous “real” sound has advantages over snapshot digital bits.
December 23rd, 2010 at 18:04Vinyl doesn’t have to be ‘AAA’ to sound great.
There were not so many of these discs made since the mid-80s, yet most record collectors will have some excellent audiophile grade LPs from the last 20 or so years, DMM(Direct Metal Mastered)records for example.
Also, I’d like to point out that many digital recordings these days are run to analogue tape (e.g. ATR102 1/2″ 30ips) during the mixing or mastering process, and on an analogue console too. How that must horrify the digit nerds!
iTunes rules and will continue to rule for the masses, myself included. The CD is literally becoming more obsolete by the day.
But here’s a fabulous item to own for the special albums in your life. A substantial ‘physical’ product with real artwork and real sound quality…..
The only other format I’d be interested in would be (high-quality)analogue cassettes, duplicated in real time on chrome tape and housed in card sleeves (like with CD, I hate jewel cases). That would enable me to choose between Mp3s and analogue wherever I wanted.
