Rock Aid Armenia remix
As we reported earlier, the all-star version of Smoke on the Water recorded back in the day for the benefit of 1988 earthquake in Armenia is being re-released in newly remixed form. All the proceeds from this release will go towards rebuilding a musical school in the town of Gyumri, which still operates out of temporary housing.
I must say that despite the obvious scepticism, the new mix sounds to these ears very refreshing and energetic. See for yourselves:
The single can be purchased through iTunes or ordered from a store near you:
And if you are still hesitating, remember that it’s all for a good cause.
Thanks to Jon Dee and Ara Tadevosyan for the info.
Amazing !
Stunning !
Superb !
Buying it again. 🙂
October 19th, 2010 at 19:10Seen it before, when it first came out back then including the ‘Making Of’ special. Not much else can be done with this. Re-mix’s aren’t Re-recordings and I’d rather see a NEW version than a Re-mixed one with same footage. Sorry but if have seen it, you have seen it. If you haven’t then by all means enjoy it. Pretty cool especially for when it was made. Quite an array of big guns here jamming and singing to the Purple Staple….
Meanwhile, still hanging in there, waiting for SOMETHING NEW.
Cheers
October 20th, 2010 at 00:25I don´t know exactly but I think, that is the first and the only time, that our majesty Mr. RITCHIE BLACKMORE has made a project with other top guitarists …
isn´t or not ?

October 22nd, 2010 at 17:39Gives you a bit on a headache afterwards, but in a pleasant kind of way, as all true Deep Purple music is supposed to!
@ 3
Nope.
Listen to Green Bullfrog or the mayhem with Lord Sutch.
October 25th, 2010 at 13:57Another re-mix……………..I guess its for a good cause
Re-mix, remaster, re-issue…………………….seen it, been there, done it!
Enjoyable to see ‘The Gathering’…………..and the stroking of certain egos!
October 26th, 2010 at 07:53Priest, those sessions were Long Ago and didn’t really have any collaborative nature with other guitarists as does this one. Ritchie actually is interacting with other guitarists in this SOTW session whereby each track was laid down separately on those other recordings you brought up.
Cheers
October 26th, 2010 at 22:45@ 3, this is the only time I am aware of that Ritchie worked with some of his famous peers. I understand he has often been asked but usually doesn’t accept. I saw him jam with Gillan once (The Rainbow Theatre around 79) And I believe he sometimes had an impromptu Jam session with friends bands (Jackie Lynton, Sweet etc.) Other than that, he worked with other guitarists on Green Bullfrog and Lord Sutch as Priest suggested 🙂
October 28th, 2010 at 15:56@Tracy…. once again this is clearly not Deep Purple released product and you’re asking this source(or THS) for something new from them again just because they’re supporting it and presenting it as a news piece. When the difference finally dawns on you, let us know. lol! This website does not only cater to new Purple releases, if they did there would rarely be anything to cover. But I’m sure you can correct me there, right? When the Armenian disaster relief put out a ‘new’ DP album, I’m sure you will be the first and only to know about it.(ps, I’d like to know when this VIDEO and the ‘Making Of’ video were released before and got your money for doing so as it is as… they weren’t as far as I remember, only available on bootlegs, and the ‘Making Of’ only aired on TV in Europe so all you have seen is a bootleg of that too, but there was a record released, and this is obviously the ‘re-mixed’ audio, so it is still in fact a first time release.(the only time this clip was released that I can remember was on the Exclusive mail order MTV-VHS release when one of the TWO video sourced versions of the clip appeared on ‘Hard and Heavy’, if memory serves me correctly) And hypotheically, even had you watched it on TV, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t release it for those who didn’t and want a copy in restored condition, same goes for bootleg owners of this, and something to think about for those who would rather have something for free that is in poor condition compared to this. For that it is a worthy upgrade and money well spent for the cause. How about writing the management a letter, it’s the only way you’ll be heard, and according to Ian lately, if you do they will wait even longer. Keep driving the nail of discontent, and thanks for curing some rainy afternoon boredom.
November 19th, 2010 at 22:09I recorded it directly from MTV on my VHS and I have the Hard and Heavy Vid also. If my memory prevails, I believe I also have it on Laser Disc. Either way you must have been extremely bored as you put it to waste that much energy with such a long response that actually doesn’t answer my post. All I stated was that if you have seen it, unless they actually changed it, it wasn’t worth remastering it that’s all. Just my opinion. For those who don’t have it or haven’t seen it, then it will be something they will enjoy and well worth picking up.
Yes I do know the difference between Official Purple Release an not. Doesn’t change the fact that I am still fed up with all these Re-Releases. I can hardly wait for the Re-Re-Re-Re-release 10 years down the road too…..LOL.
Just impatiently waiting for the NEW PURPLE RECORD while being bombarded with rehash instead…..
Cheers
November 21st, 2010 at 02:08Hi i remember when it was released Smoke and Paranoid on the B side, both stunning tracks in their own right but do really need new versions. What I think have been more appropriate and sold better would have been jam session.
November 30th, 2012 at 09:57Using this one would have had to consider less is more, so figures such as May and Lifeson would have to go and I’m sure a drummer better than Taylor could have been found.
Blackmore, Iommi, Gilmore, Squire, Emerson, Gillan, Rogers and Dickinson something or maybe everything would have happened with those many egos. Echoing that I do rememebr Blackmore choosing to play to the Rogers track. Blee him
