Definitely not the last

Ian Gillan; Montreal, August 27, 2024; photo: Robert Lio

Ian Gillan spoke to The Yorkshire Post:

In a few days you’ll be embarking on a five-date UK arena tour. Are you looking forward to it?

Absolutely. We’re very much looking forward to it. This tour actually started in May but we are finishing in the UK so we are definitely looking forward to it for sure then we`ll be off the road for Christmas and then I’ll get a holiday but we will be working after the tour is finished.

You’ve called it the One More Time tour. Is this really going to be your last tour or do you still intend to play select dates as and when you want?

We actually changed the name to the ‘=1 Tour’ when we realised what everyone was thinking because that’s what it sounds like but we didn’t think of it like that. We meant it more in musical terms of “let’s go again”. We had a previous tour with similar problems called ‘The Long Goodbye Tour’ so this is definitely not going to be our last tour.

It’s behind a pay wall, is it worth spending 50p on it?

Re Big Ian singing Lil Simon’s praises and what he’s done to Hush: Yup, I sometimes too think that McBride’s choppy, very Brit rhythm & blues rhythm guitar has given DP’s live performances something lively and bouncy they haven’t had since Tommy Bolin’s idiosyncratic rhythm playing in Mk IV. Playing RnB with Andrew Strong of The Commitments for eight years left a mark on him and changed his outlook on rhythm guitar playing, he has said so himself in interviews:

I’m not entirely sure, but I believe you can see glimpses of Simon with Andrew Strong (as well as another British – let’s count Northern Ireland as part of Britain for ease of reference – guitarist from an irrelevant band that released some today largely forgotten albums in the 70s) in this vid

Simon might be the guitarist to the left of Gilmour (he’s hard to catch and the vid is blurry, but his rhythm playing and body movements are very Simon), but even if he’s not, it gives you an impression of the music he played with Andrew Strong for a long time.

PS: Karin you would really organize crowdfunding for me?! I am not worthy. You truly are the Mother Teresa of all Purple Faithful!!! 😘

Why aren’t they doing ” Later with Jools Holland ” in England on Saturday night ?
    They’re here and they’re free ?
I always remember Ian Paice saying in an interview with Jools during the ” Now What ” promotion that they would make it happen !?

I’m so very glad that it is not the last tour. I saw them in Brussels in Oktober and I certainly need to see them again ,they still perform fantastic all of them;their show was outstanding , superb as Ian would say.Maybe another fantastic album in the future, I hope so very much!!!

    Beats me, Steve.

But if I’m not entirely mistaken, Jools has a certain preference for solo artists, probably because they are easier to incorporate into his own musical act. So an invite for Ian Gillan would probably be more likely than for the whole band.

Hi Carmen, we seem to be experiencing a feminist wave here! 🤗

Simon has brought a second spring for our senior citizens boy band, no mean feat.

“No previous Deep Purple guitar player has looked at ‘Hush’ the way Simon is doing it. I’m blown away. He’s revitalised the song and brought it right up to date. It’s just jaw-dropping.”

It seems like another indirect attack on Steve. Although it appears to be the only song where Simon doesn’t seem to repeat himself or follow the manual, Hush is Steve’s favorite DP song and was included in the setlist at his suggestion, according to Ian.

    @10 + 11

Unfortunately I don’t know the gentleman’s sentiment when he spoke those words:

“No previous Deep Purple guitar player has looked at ‘Hush’ the way Simon is doing it. I’m blown away. He’s revitalised the song and brought it right up to date. It’s just jaw-dropping.”

Is it too far fetched to imagine that Deep Purple simply want to make SMcB feel very welcome?

I don’t know how I would feel, taking over the very important spot in Deep Purple as a guitarist, but I guess a feeling of limitation would not be too strange.
So maybe the gentleman is simply consolidating SMcB’s position, also saying to reporters: “hey SMcB is a good choice, he is our unanimous choice, so back of if any of you wants to criticise”!
    😊
And by this I’m not belittling SMcB at all, he just mentioned himself that it was a bit overwhelming for him to be an equal part of DP, and man I do understand that!
SMcB has proven himself to everyone’s content, and I do find Ian G’s kind and loving words so comforting 🥰
